Remember, when shopping for a good source of omega-3’s (DHA & EPA), you won’t find them in vegetable🥥🌽🫒 & seed🥜🌰 oils. And that’s because your pets' can’t convert plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) efficiently enough to DHA or EPA to meet their daily requirements.

These fatty acids, DHA & EPA, which are the preferred form of omega-3 fatty acids for dogs and often are derived from fish or a marine, ocean-­ sourced oil (salmon, krill, squid, mussels, etc.), have been shown to reduce inflammation and boost brain regeneration (including increasing canine BDNF). The real superheroes are the substances contained in the marine oils, the resolvins. These compounds block inflammation from occurring and resolve existing inflammation. Other types of healthy oils and fats (including h**p, chia, and flax oil) do not contain resolvins or DHA and EPA.

A brief history lesson: After bull-baiting, bear-baiting and dog fighting were prohibited in England in 1835, a few dedicated fanciers worked diligently to breed out the aggressive, vicious tendencies and to modify the Bulldog to look more like we see him today, shorter faced and heavier in structure. These breeders made it their job to preserve and protect the Bulldog.

The modern is gentle, intelligent, affectionate, strong and determined. The Bulldog was among the first of the breeds to be granted official recognition when the Kennel Club (England) was organized in 1873.

Steroids have their place in medicine, however, they are often over used, or used inappropriately, and can have serious negative effects.⁠
⁠
Steroids are used for allergies, autoimmune diseases, inflammation, suppressing symptoms, and in treatment of some cancers. Replacement cortisol is used for pets with Addison's, however, steroids do not "cure" anything. While short term they can help get a situation under control, I add in alternative therapies to minimize their use and address the root cause.⁠

▪️ Depomedrol is often used in a slow release injection, especially for cats. It usually suppresses symptoms for 2-4 weeks, however, it suppresses the adrenal glands for months. ⁠
▪️ Pets on steroids are more prone to pancreatitis, urinary tract infections, and diabetes.⁠
▪️ Steroids should only be used with a pet on heart medications when absolutely necessary.⁠
▪️ I do not vaccinate while pets are on steroids and their immune system is suppressed. ⁠
▪️ Pets must be tapered off of steroids.⁠

The English Springer Spaniel is a sweet-faced, lovable bird dog of great energy, stamina, and brains. Sport hunters appreciate the duality of working Springers: handsome, well mannered pets during the week, and trusty hunting, show and performance buddies on weekends.

Are you interested in this breed? The OFA, working with the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association, recommends the following basic health screening tests for all breeding stock:
- Hip Dysplasia (OFA or PennHip)
- Elbow Dysplasia
- ACVO Eye Exam
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy
- DNA Repository
Optional but recommended:
- FUCOSIDOSIS
- PFK
- Degenerative Myelopathy
- Autoimmune Thyroiditis
- Cardiac (Basic, congenital, or advanced via a cardiologist)

Dogs meeting these basic health screening requirements are issued Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) numbers. For potential puppy buyers, CHIC certification is a good indicator the breeder responsibly factors good health into their selection criteria.
