Candid Canine is more than just an adoption agency. Our mission is to provide training to dogs in shelter and rescue care to increase their quality of life and adoptability, whether that be through private training or foster parent education. Often times, we specifically help with dogs struggling with behavior issues such as reactivity, kennel stress, and fear. These dogs often just need a little bit more structure and time than others, usually thriving as some of the best underdog stories. Our hope is that we can educate as many shelters, rescues, and foster homes as possible with our knowledge in order to help even more dogs, empower these essential roles, increase foster retention, and normalize balanced training in animal welfare organizations.

How can you help? Simply by sharing, and not just this post. Recruit other foster homes and volunteers, share our mission with organizations you work with, and just open up the conversation. And, as with any non-profit, donate - we don’t have many expenses but we hope to continue to expand and provide resources to those special dogs. At the moment, funds are used to provide for the dogs inn our care, training equipment, and our educational website.

Together, we can be the change - we just have to start the conversation.

Easy tip to practice training your dog the basics!
Stop feeding your dog in a bowl, and start hand feeding them.

Grab a treat pouch and put their food in that pouch and head outside! Practice recall, heel, sit, down, place, break, leave it all during play!
You accomplish 1) feeding 2) interacting with your dog creating a higher bond 3) teaching them and they don’t even realize it!

Afterwards, give them a high reward chew for them to relax and enjoy!

Leash reactivity in dogs can occur for several reasons. Do you know the difference?

🐾 Fear 🐾
This happens when a dog feels threatened or scared in certain situations while on a leash. The dog is not aggressive or unfriendly, but how they respond to what they perceive as a scary or threatening situation.
🦴 Frustration 🦴
Another reason behind leash reactivity is frustration. Some dogs get overly excited when they see other dogs or people because they want to interact. Being on a leash prevents them from greeting or playing however they want. This frustration can build up and result in reactive behavior, like barking or jumping.
🐾 Past Experiences 🐾
Sometimes, a dog’s past experiences can contribute to leash reactivity. If a dog has had negative encounters while on a leash, such as being attacked by another dog or punished by their owner, they might develop a reactive behavior. They associate the leash with these bad experiences and react out of fear or anxiety.
🦴 Training 🦴
Dogs that haven’t been properly trained on a leash by not understanding the proper expectations.
🐾 Socialization 🐾
Dogs that haven’t been socialized might feel anxious in public situations. They might not have learned how to interact calmly or understand what’s expected of them.

If you have a leash reactive dog for any of these reasons I would love to work with you and your dog to resolve these issues and build a solid foundation where you and your dog can enjoy being out together.

This is a common issue I see with a great deal of my wonderful clients. How you communicate with your dog is so important! I’m having to constantly remind clients, reward, correct, praise.. this needs to be a common constant practice daily when your with your dog! Great video!

While I was out training a dog downtown, I passed 2 ladies with a doodle. The doodle was pulling and all over the place, she was 2 hand gripping the leash to keep it under any kind of control. I had Enzo on his leash and we continued to walk past as I told him simply to “heel”. Enzo like the rockstar he is just walked on past never leaving my side and ignoring the doodle. As we went on pass, I heard the woman say “Good job” to the doodle…
Huh???? What part of that scenario was “good”??? I went on my way and continued to mind my own business.. being Enzo. We finished what we set out to do and headed back to the Jeep. as we are coming down the side walk, I see the 2 ladies and doodle sitting down at a sidewalk restaurant table. The doodle is laying down but looking our way. I step as far to the side as I can and continue to walk by prepared for any possible challenges, as we approach the doodle lunges and snips at Enzo. I immediately react and pull Enzo behind me and step in front of the doodle. The lady apologizes and says, “I swear he’s sweet! I didn’t see you coming with your dog.”I don’t respond bc I wouldn’t have been nice!
I gave her my card.
I admittedly was mad.
This is a way too common scenario. I have almost stopped taking my training dogs downtown to train due to situations like this. The doodle was not trained AT ALL, and had no control. The lady was not paying attention to her dog or the surroundings in which to keep both her dog and other dogs safe and she was delusional to the fact her dog had no control. Her dog may be sweet sitting at home on the couch next to HER, but that dog was absolutely NOT sweet to passerby dogs and was quite reactive.
Please for the love of all holy dogs… don’t be this lady. Get training! If you take your untrained, reactive dog out in public, have the proper safety protocols in place and don’t take your eyes off of your dog.
Thankfully I was training a dog that
1- listens to commands and 2- is not reactive himself. Btw… Enzo is a pit mix. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Are you comfortable and confident taking your dog on a walk in the park, or down a public street? Could you go sit at a busy outdoor restaurant? Or maybe a walk through your favorite dog friendly store?
Does your dog walk with you, not reacting to other people, dogs, or even the random squirrel?
Our training programs help you and your dog achieve all these things. We provide a positive atmosphere where they learn the skills they need while also working with you to learn how to continue teaching your dog how to be the best companion for you.

I’ve been so busy I’m a bit behind!
This spunky little chunk went back home to his family Wednesday evening. I’m excited to continue working with him and his family. He has come so far with his resource guarding and aggression issues, but is still a work in progress. I posted the last video to show his progress with Luca. When he first met Luca he was very aggressive towards him, and wanted to attack every opportunity he got. They became best buds. Building Man’s confidence and setting strict boundaries has been key to getting him to this point.

Luca and I decided to enjoy some sunshine on the beach today after training. He’s the coolest guy on the beach today! 😎

I sometimes get calls from potential clients that I can’t help, or they’re coming to me because they have had a bad experience with another trainer. Not every trainer is right for every dog, or even every dog owner. When looking for a trainer here are some key things to look for!
I would like to add, Where will my dog be kept while in your care? and How often and what type of communication should I expect?
