We have been working with dogs for roughly 5 years, but for fun since childhood. Learning the behaviors, understanding reactions, educational instructions, and just really getting to know them for who they are. ve. Dogs are pleasant animals and become lifelong friends. Training a dog gives them the desire to respect you. When you show them how to behave, they are pleased and appreciative of the hard work put in. We are essentially stripping (or unlearning) negative less desirable behaviors, and retraining with positive reinforcement.

A Dog's Tilt of the Head

Dogs tilt their heads for a variety of reasons, including:
• Engagement: Dogs tilt their heads to show they are listening and engaged, similar to humans nodding during a conversation. Social dogs may tilt their heads more often to encourage longer conversations.
• Empathy: Dogs tilt their heads to show they're paying attention to human body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice.
• Curiosity: Dogs tilt their heads when they're interested in something, especially when you're talking to them in an engaging or unusual way.
• Amplifying sound: Tilting their heads helps dogs hear unique sounds more clearly, especially if they have floppy ears.

There are times when a dog tilts the head more frequently. It could indicate an ear infection, inflammation or vestibular issue. In those cases, check in with your vet.

Tonto Pupdate!
We have spent this week really getting to know Tonto and all of his quirks.
We done a slow introduction with a social butterfly dog (Felix) to see how Tonto would respond to his actions and well… the photos speak for themselves! We have since added Tonto to our big boys group and to say he loves it is an understatement. We have had ZERO aggression issues.
He is a playful eater… he will play around his food and with his food and in his food until ultimately he has redecorated his suite with his food- thankfully it isn’t wet food 😂

Now for the training. Tonto has markers to become a service animal. He is incredibly smart and alert and conscious of (most) all of his decisions — and yours as well. He watches waiting for his next command and responds almost instantly every time. When I say we have a diamond in the rough right now; believe it. We intend to give Tonto the opportunity to expand his abilities and flourish in becoming a Model Canine ❤️

Stay tuned as Tonto opens a package tomorrow from his family here at Model Canine to help his transition from home to facility to his furever future 🐾❤️

Topic for the Day - "In Case of Emergency" Info for our Pets 🐾

Just as we carry personal In Case of Emergency (ICE) information in our wallets or cell phones, it's important to carry similar info about our pets. Include at least one emergency contact, your vet’s contact info, and significant details about your pet(s) and location.

Let your emergency contact know how you would like them to handle situations that could arise. For example, should they pick up your pet? Stop in to check on her? Should they call your vet or the pet's day care facility?

Below is a printable ICE form that you can use for your wallet or as a template of information to add to the ICE information on your cell phone. 🐾

The moment you’ve all been so patiently waiting for!
Tonto in is the building! Model Canine building that is. He got settled into his suite nicely before the rain started. Some things we’ve found out along the way; He’s the very best rider. Slept 97% of the way. He LOVES to cuddle. Had 0 accidents! (That speaks volume for a puppy his age). He is eager to please and has googly eyes for Devan (for now) 🤭and is an all around good boy!

Tomorrow his real test begins. We will begin his day getting to know his strengths and weaknesses in training and he will be introduced into group. This one is a big deal as Tonto is believed to be an aggressor. Updated progress to come ❤️🦴

We want to take this time also to thank everyone who helped make this happen and give Tonto the chance he deserves to be the very best Model Canine.

With Tonto in tow we start our trip back to Model Canine! We got this sweet boy late last night and enjoyed some quick cuddles before a little rest. We have started our travels back this morning and cannot wait to see how Tonto reacts to the travel (so far so good)

Model Canine is headed to Oklahoma to pick up Tonto!
Tonto is an 8-9 month old Decker Rat Terrier coming to Florida through the Decker Terrier Rescue for his basic obedience training before his grand adventure to his new furever home. His current owners sought help from the foundation and made the very hard decision to do what was best for him. The foundation then contacted us about his training which will be vital for his placement.

Decker Rat Terriers are a small-medium sized hunting breed however they are just as much family dogs.

We are roughly 5 hours from Tonto and VERY eager to meet him!

Model Canine Granny and other help are with our guest at the facility keeping them company until we return with their newest playmate 🦴🐾

Topic for the Day: Canine Paws

A dog’s paws play an important role in their lives. Healthy paws are essential for walking and running comfortably. There are five parts to a dog's paw: the claws, digital pads, metacarpal pads, dewclaws, and carpal pads.

The paw is structured with bones, skin, tendons, blood supply, sweat glands and connective tissue. When dogs walk or run, the toes and claws give them traction while the pad serves as a shock absorber.

A dog’s toe has a toenail (claw) associated with it. There are usually four nails on a dog’s rear paws that are attached to a toe and often five (including the dewclaw) on their front paws. One of the illustrations attached, from dogster.com, shows the front vs. back paw. The claws are used for traction, scratching, digging, and holding.

Paw massages can help to increase circulation and are calming for the pups that enjoy them.

Topic for the day! The Canine Tongue

Have you ever given thought to your dog’s tongue? Most canine tongues are pink, some with pigmentation spots. Only Chow Chows and Shar-Peis are different- they have blue-black tongues.

The tongue serves many purposes for our pups.

It helps to keep them cool. Instead of sweating, dogs pant to cool down. When they pant, air moves over their tongue and through their mouth and lungs, allowing moisture to evaporate and cool them down.

Dogs use their tongues for grooming, and to care for small wounds. Their saliva contains proteins that inhibit infection.

Most pups love to eat! They have 1700 taste buds, far fewer than humans. But in combination with their superpower, their sense of smell, the taste buds help them decide what seems enticing and safe, and to differentiate between salty, sweet, sour and bitter flavors.

They also use their tongues to show affection to their canine friends, which is very sweet.
