Pensacola Dog Fanciers Association (PDFA)

Pensacola Dog Fanciers Association (PDFA) Pensacola Dog Fancier’s Association, Inc. is a non profit organization dedicated to the advancement of the sport, health and welfare of purebred dogs.

We put on two AKC sanctioned dog shows per year, which involves a great deal of time, dedication, volunteers and money. Both shows, one an all-breed show and obedience trial held in early March (or the last weekend in February), the second show our all-breed Agility Trial held in January. Both take place at the Escambia Equestrian Center. With the income from these events, we usually clear enough

money to help support the educational and community minded projects throughout the rest of the year. PDFA also gives classes in handling and canine good citizen, beginner obedience and rally. More information can be found at web site www.pensacoladogs.org

Putting on an AKC dog show means lots of volunteers because it is your local dog club that sponsors the event. It is a big undertaking most years, but this year our show has doubled in size while our members are taking on many more volunteer jobs to bring it together. Several jobs can be helped by volunteers who have no real experience but like being down on the main event floor with the dogs and meeting the people who work with them. Rally and the AKC temperament test really could use more hands helping with the courses. For instance the temperament course has several stations with different challenges for the dogs - someone to open an umbrella, shake a milk bottle of coins, carry a box, use a walker etc. The rally ring needs help setting ring cards for the judges. If you have any interest and friends or kids willing to spend a day or a weekend helping put on one of the few shows left in this area that doesn't take their event to other big towns to hold them during the week when most are in school or at work, your assistance would be most appreciated. Teenagers or teenage clubs looking for community help options are welcome. Please contact [email protected]

PDFA was the first to hold an Agility Trial in Florida and we continue to hold a trial at the Equestrian Center every January. This fast moving sport essentially serves as a obstacle race or differing difficulties for different sizes of dogs and is one of the favorite viewing tapes of the national and Westminster Dog Shows. Not only does PDFA welcome spectators to come out and watch, but with the amount of volunteers needed to put on such a trial, we welcome volunteers to assist with some of the jobs that don't require prior knowledge. Over the 3 days we could use pole setters, leash runners and score sheet runners to help relieve club members to work at jobs that do require some knowledge. These jobs put you on the arena floor in the middle of the action. The club gives tickets to workers for a volunteer raffle at the end of the show. If you have any interest, please email [email protected] for more informaton.
See our events page for times, place and dates of the trial, as well as the premium, which has info on other tests and events, such as the FAST CAT that will also be held at the trial.

Important dog news- please share
The show that was scheduled in Hattiesburg, Dec 6-9, 2019, has been moved to Gulfport.

MGCKC held a special Board of Directors meeting last evening to discuss and study the location for our All Breed Event being held December 6-8, 2019. Serious discussion followed and it was moved and unanimously agreed to cancel our contract with the Forrest County Fairgrounds because of the recent onerous animal ordinance passed recently.

Because this ordinance would negatively affect any exhibitor coming to our events, it was agreed that we would return to the Harrison County Fairgrounds.

Watch for the premium list to be released on Onofrio's website.

AKC wouldn't give us the extra show date we had hoped for being in our own county. We will work on that, but meanwhile we did get the International All Breed Canine Association to add Pensacola to their calendar and they will be at the same site on Thursday and Friday holding a total of 4 shows. The good thing about these shows is numbers don't count, the dog's quality does. Each judge gives your dog a written critique and grade. High enough from each judge and you can earn an international certficate over just those shows! We are excited as folks who attend these shows tell us they love them. (https://www.iabca.com/PDFs/Premium-IABCA.pdf ) Hopefully it will help our entries, as after Onofrio and AKC get their cut we get about $770 off of the entries for our shows. Doesn't leave much to pay for judges, site rental and all the other expenses involved beyond superintendent contract. That's why volunteers and the door prizes are so important to keep the show in Pensacola and prices where they are. Even if you aren't a club member, think about donating your time or a door prize as well as attending the show!
We are also adding veterans group and Barn Hunt on top of the Fast Cat, CGC testing and health clinics we added last year.

Please help us get the word out - We are one of the few AKC shows in the panhandle and tristate gulf area still bringing AKC dog shows to their community - most have moved to the bigger cities, making it hard for peope to learn about or see the breeds they are interested in. PDFA has been in Pensaclola since 1936, having started shows at the Sanders Beach Community Center, The Bayfront Audtorium, the Fairgrounds and now the Equestrian Center, being one of the top 10 event holders at that facility. The show brings people from many different states into our community and local businesses recognize what that means to the area economically.

The Dog Flu Symptoms You Need to Know

There is much talk about the canine flu that first started popping up at the Perry Georgia show and rumors are rampant about sick dogs at Monroe LA show. The reports of ghost town and 70 dogs being sick sounded extreme from what I heard from owner that got 2 majors at that show and I called the show chair. She reports that handler, Bobby Schoenfeld took 2 of his dogs to the vet as they were ill and they were determined to have the flu. He left the show with all of his dogs and a number of poodle handlers left with concerns, but there were no reports of deaths or two vets working the show to examine dogs.
This flu is purported to be the same flu that hit the Chicago area in 2015. We are told that healthy dogs might show signs of coughing and nasal discharge and dogs with compromised immune systems, old or very young may develop more severe symptoms and pneumonia, which must be treated immediately, as pneumonia can kill a dog, often before people realize how sick they are.
There are those concerned about exposure and for that reason, PDFA has suspended classes through the end of June. There is a vaccine that some area vets do have. It is not inexpensive and requires a booster 3 weeks after the initial shot. The Chicago flu is thought to have originated in asia and possibly been introduced here by "homeless dogs" imported by the groups that brings such dogs into the US to "adopt" through shelters - one of the reasons many object to this action as foreign dogs are exposed to things we may not have acclimated to. Regardless, there is information posted on the AKC website and some vet sites, including Dr. Jean Dodd, who specializes in such things and we post the links here for more information.

I hope this helps everyone who is concerned about their dogs and any exposure.

As dog flu outbreaks become more common in the U.S., dog owners need to be aware of the dog flu symptoms that indicate an infection.

Pet Stores | Animal Law Update

There is a strong push on by HSUS to try and block all purebred outlets state by state, and if necessary, county by county and the big test case is happening in New Jersey. To learn more about this law with the good and bad things about it, I suggest https://animallaw.foxrothschild.com/category/pet-stores/
Something the public doesn't realize is that shelters and rescues have become the pet stores of today. To help boost that, one move is to prohibit pet stores from selling anything not from rescuers and shelters. That has already happened in counties and cities in other states, including Florida. and despite all the propaganda that pet stores and breeders are responsible for filling shelters. A recent study of 18 U.S. animal shelters to identify “the types of dogs present in today’s animal shelters,” confirms that the population of dogs in shelters are not purebred dogs from the pet stores. The National Animal Interest Alliance found:

According to this study, the number of purebreds in U.S. animal shelters is closer to 5% (5.04%) than to the 25% so commonly cited by national animal organizations and quoted by the media. It is interesting to observe that the number of purebreds in shelters would be 3.3% were it not for two breeds that are over-represented, Chihuahuas and dogs described as Pit Bulls. Together, these two breeds account for 35% of all purebreds listed by shelters in this study. The public seems to be aware that dogs described as Pit Bulls are over-represented in American shelters. What is not well known is that Chihuahuas are the single most numerous purebred found in shelters today. Because Chihuahuas are small, attractive to adopters and highly adoptable, their numbers are especially high in shelters that import dogs for adoption. Not all Americans know such dogs are being imported from foreign countries and increasing sales at the shelters, while skewing the numbers quoted as being shelter dogs.
Another source listed pit bulls as 44% of shelter populations. Pit bulls are not AKC purebreds and as someone who has worked in animal control, I know many dogs signed in as a breed are not actually that breed, nor registered with AKC, so even the dogs "adopted" as chihuahuas, are mixed small dogs, probably with some chihuahua in the background.
Many of these proposed bills are still calling for sterilization of dogs and cats 8 weeks of age - now shown to be harmful to the pets, causing problems later in their lives.

There is a county no longer issuing licenses to people with multiple dogs who have a web site or are listed as a breeder by AKC. At this point there is a question of trying to circumvent a federal law that wasn't as condemning as some were looking for toward anyone who breeds.

People aren't standing up and taking notice as their rights to making their own choices with pets are being attacked. How can this happen? By not being aware. Please take a look and be aware.

1) all cats and dogs brought into the State from other jurisdictions to have an animal history and health certificate certified by a licensed veterinarian providing the information about the cat or dog specified in subsection a. of section 1 of the bill; and
