🎉Set your dog up for success! 🎉
You probably heard this once or twice. Do you know what this actually means to your dog?
Imagine you are trying to solve a very difficult math problem in a quite library where you have plenty of resources and space to think.
Do you think you could solve this on Saturday night in the heart of downtown Pensacola?
Probably not!
We see this all the time with people taking their pup out in public with lots of distractions.
They'll say “down. Down? Doooowwwnn, DOWN!" get frustrated and say, “he knows it! He does it at home!”
Sure, the dog might know their “Down” command at home, but having solid obedience commands in any environment takes lots of practice.
They are most likely overwhelmed and overstimulated by all the sights, sounds, people, dogs, and other distractions.
So instead of getting frustrated and taking your dogs’ “not listening” personally, we should think about how could we could set up our dogs for success.
If you and your pup is on the “struggle bus”, make your training easier (shorter durations, less people, shorter distance etc). 👏
Work the dog that’s in front of you and you work your way up. 👆
If your dog would be a toddler, you wouldn’t except them to be able to read the newspaper to you at age 3. 😵💫
Take your time, build your foundation. 🙌
‼️The basics can never be good enough ❤️
