Just a day or so away from opening his eyes. This is my favorite age for rat pups, they are so soft and chubby and perfectly tiny.

I have been meaning to draw up a logo for my rattery for a very long time now. I think I have finally come up with something that will work for watermarks, business cards, and stickers.

Spring Updates:

Flotsam and Jetsam have made it through their 4 week quarantine just fine. Flotsam stopped sneezing entirely, Jetsam seems to be sensitive to pollen but cleared up with a round of Amoxicillin. Neither of the boys ever developed any symptoms beyond the sneezing and congestion. I’ll likely breed Flotsam for more hairless rattos.

No available rats at this time!

I have a small litter from my agouti line growing up right now, there will be one pair of females available from this litter in a month.

I have the wonderful The Moon Is Made Of Cheese aka Cheese paired up with his sister Odette. Both rats are Dumbo black variegated, with Cheese being velveteen as well. I’ll hold back a girl from this litter but everyone else will be available to adopt.

I am still working on health in my Winsome line, breeding out mega colon. Babies from this line won’t be available to adopt until they are 14 weeks old, to ensure that they didn’t inherit MC which can show up as late as 12 weeks. I’ll also be doing extensive temperament testing for these rittens since this is a fairly new outcross, but so far all rats produced have been lovely things. I have two small litters that were born this week from this line, and all babies will be available pending they pass for health and temperament testing here.

I am still working on revamping my application/adoption process. You can still fill out my existing application but there will be extra steps before a pick up time is scheduled.

Thanks for reading all this! Please enjoy a picture of Cheese cleaning his little face. 🖤🖤🖤

A rat in my very first mischief, over a decade ago now, was named Ursula. ( along with Skeksis, Pixie, and Freya) She was a top ear agouti Berkshire and just loved to test the soundness of the DIY cage I used in those days. She tried to lead an escape mission every time I was deep cleaning the cage. Or opening the cage door for any reason, really. Just a wonderful girl

Flotsam and Jetsam remind me of her chaotic energy so much! I am trying to spend a little bonding time with them and they wanna run amok. I have leftover playpen panels, I think I need to make them a quarantine playpen up in my attic.

Decided to do a quick redraw of the very first Raticals comic from 2022. And I made a logo! What do ye think?

Dedicated to Žoni, she was a wee brawler, bless her.

reposting bc this is so well said.

Another thing that worries me, is how many rats are going to end up in shelters because of this? Because a chain store will sell you an animal you and they know little to nothing about. An unsocialized and likely poorly bred animal who may bite or just not like people. Owners who are unprepared for all the quirks that come with rats, and the vet costs. They won’t require that your rat have a companion. They might let you buy a 10 gallon fish tank and paper bedding for your rat and not know well enough to warn you of how hard that is on their sensitive little airways, how sick they can get. A chain store doesn’t really care what happens to the rats they sell, after the sale is done.

It’s in my adoption contract that I will take back any rats I adopted out. At any time, for any reason, if you cannot care for your rats, I will take them back. I keep a quarantine room and extra empty cages just for this. A chain store will not take in your elderly rat who outlived all its cage mates, when you aren’t ready for new rats but don’t want your buddy to be alone. A chain store won’t remember what litter your rat came from. A chain store won’t have hand raised your rats, and their parents and grandparents and great grandparents and…

Anyway. I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing, for the love of rats. Because I’m not the only one who thinks that rats are amazing, intelligent, soulful creatures that deserve our respect and utmost care.

I am going to be revising my adoption contract and process in the coming weeks.

What this will mean for potential adopters is a delay for when pickups will be getting scheduled. I will be pausing adoptions while I sort out my new process. This should only take me a month, two months at the longest. I am also revamping my rattery setup during this time, having more racks built and generally reorganizing things.

Bean spam so this post doesn’t get lost 🖤
