We’re in the midst of the summer heat, and PET HYDRATION is one of the most critical things to be concerned about during this extreme heat. To raise awareness, the PetSafe® Brand has declared the month of JULY NATIONAL PET HYDRATION AWARENESS MONTH!
Did you know our pets bodies are made up of even more water than humans?!….approx. 80%! Pet Hydration is often a health concern that is not addressed enough, it is crucial for our pets and can quickly turn fatal if they are not getting enough water.
Here is a little information about keeping your pets hydrated, safe and healthy this summer!
1. Make sure to monitor your pets water intake: Kibble and other dry foods have very little moisture levels, if you notice your pet doesn’t drink a lot from the water bowl, consider adding a wet food or adding water a little water to his/her food.
2. Give your pet access to fresh water at all times: This means even when “on-the-go”! If you’re taking a road trip, pull over a few times and offer water to your pet, and of course bring lots of water for your pet if you’re engaging in any outdoor activities together.
3. Clean bowls daily: One tip that is not discussed enough is washing your pet’s water bowls daily. Just like any pool of moisture, bacteria can grow. Leaving your dog’s bowl unwashed for several days or weeks can contribute to bacteria growth and deter him/her from drinking enough water.
4. Try a Pet Drinking Fountain: Many pets are naturally drawn to running water and will drink more from a fountain than they will from a traditional water dish. Come cool off at one of our stores, and check out our fountains!
If you suspect that your pet is dehydrated, call your vet immediately. He or she can monitor your pet’s condition and administer fluids if necessary.
