In the wilds of the PCAPS, a rare sighting: Echo, A “Midwestern Polar Bear.” 🐻‍❄️

Weighing in at 108 pounds, this gentle giant thrives among packs (dog-friendly ✅) and blends seamlessly with younger explorers (kid-friendly ✅). Typically calm and steady, Echo’s only burst of wild energy emerges when excitement pulls him forward on the leash. A majestic mix of power and sweetness, he’s ready for his next great adventure. 🌎✨

Meet Marietta! 🐶 This cutie is a 1 year 10 month old Chinese Sharpei Mix, and if you're ready for lots of fun puppy energy, Mari is your girl! She is so silly and sweet! 🧡

Marietta was really good in the car (very quiet) and polite when other people walked by. She knows "sit" and is treat motivated. Like any young pup, she will benefit from continued training and manners. She's a smart cookie, just waiting to shine! ✨️

A shelter is only so big—so where do all the animals go?
That’s a question Kennel Manager Alex Menke asks herself every day.

Peoria County Animal Protection Services cares for about six thousand animals each year. That averages out to roughly 17 new animals arriving every day—sounds manageable, right?

The team wishes it were that simple. Warmer months bring a whirlwind of animals, not to mention surprise hoarding cases, cruelty investigations, or mass impoundments. Just today—Wednesday, September 10—PCAPS took in 17 dogs and 24 cats.

This work builds camaraderie among staff, but it also brings heartbreak.
“Every animal that walks through this door is a living being, and the connection we have with them is special. We are there for them regardless of the outcome,” said Menke.

PCAPS Director Becky Spencer added, “I am so proud of this team. I know we will continue to do what’s best and what’s right, even when it’s hard.”

It’s a great reminder to be kind to those working in the trenches—and to keep the commitment you’ve made to your own animals.

If you’d like to foster or adopt, please visit PCAPS Monday–Saturday, 12 p.m.–5 p.m.

Matthew is a handsome, goofy, sweet 1-year-old pittie is who the current longest-term dog at PCAPS. He loves other dogs, treats, and belly rubs. How he hasn't been snatched up yet is a complete mystery, because he's pretty great. You can meet him Mon-Sat, 12PM-5PM!

Thank you AJ Egbert for hiking with Roscoe!

🥹 Roscoe is one of my current favorites and I so I wanna see this sweet senior boy in a home! Roscoe is a 13 year old Terrier/Hound (Beagle?) Mix and he has a pep in his step! 💙
We kept it easy for him but, as you can see, he was just prancing along the whole way! He is such a good boy too! Very polite when we walked by other people and quiet when we saw another dog (he was too busy sniffing to even notice 😆)!
Roscoe loves his people and has lived with another small dog before. He would be the perfect companion to join for your daily walk and then snuggle up on the couch with after.

Witcher is a 2 year old Pit Bull/Alaskan Husky Mix and I can see traits of both breeds for sure. He is SO playful, goofy and sweet! Witcher has beautiful markings, one blue eye and the most adorable overbite that you'll ever see. It just adds to his charm! 😁

Witcher was so excited to go out! He was just nonstop affection in the car. So many kisses! When we got to the trail he was super curious to sniff and explore all the things! He knows "sit" and loves peanut butter cookies. 😋 I think his favorite thing was rolling (on me 🤣) for tummy rubs after his pup cup. What a goofy goober!

Witcher would love a forever family to go on hikes and play with! His former owner said he is good with kids and dogs. This unique, sweet, silly pup is sure to bring you many years of joy!

Thank you AJ Egbert for hiking with shelter dogs!

Matilda is a 2yo bully and wants nothing more than lots of love and cuddles (&maybe throw in a treat or two for good measure). 🩷 Matilda's sister went home, and Matilda is left wondering why someone hasn't chosen her yet. Girly is demonstrating some kennel stress and we'd all really love to see her adopted. You can meet her Mon-Sat,12pm-5pm!
