Cat of the Week ~ Poppy Rose

Hello! My name is Poppy Rose and I am kind of new at 4 Paws. My owner had to go away and so her family brought me here as they couldn’t care for me. I am a female short haired tabby with greenish eyes. I am 2 years 4 months old and a little shy, but I welcome petting anytime! I warm up quickly and have a soft purr to express my love. If you look at me, I have a loving face and am quite gentle. I would be great for a calmer home. I love treats, wet food and would like to play ribbon with someone again!. I have adapted well here and am sure I would do the same in a home filled with love.

Why don’t you come and visit me (and while you are at it, meet some of my new roommates). I am at the Peoria location at 10807 N. 96th Ave in Peoria Tuesday - Saturday, 10am to 3 pm or call at 623-773-2246 during those hours. We also have more adoptable cats at our Youngtown Adoption Center at 11129 W. Michigan Ave., Suite 1, same days and hours and you can contact them at 623-876-8778 during those hours, and lastly, at Surprise PetSmart located at 13764 W. Bell Road. I hope to see you!

Did you know that February is Spay and Neuter Awareness Month? 🩹🐈💉✂️


Spaying and neutering may also be called “sterilizing” or “fixing.”

🩷 At Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue, we aim to be part of the solution to the overpopulation crisis of cats in our communities. Every cat and kitten that comes through our doors is spayed or neutered before adoption without exception.

🏜 Arizona law considers cats to be free-roaming animals (with or without an owner). To our knowledge, there are no shelters that take in feral cats as they are not easily handled. And there are no shelters that will pick up or remove friendly strays or feral cats from an area. Additionally, there are no regulations, licenses, or leash laws in place to manage free-roaming cats in Maricopa County.

🐱 The primary cause of cat overpopulation is a lack of spaying and neutering by owners. Combine this with the ability to free-roam and unfixed cats are quick to reproduce uncontrollably which leads to a surplus of kittens that often end up homeless, sick, and injured. 😿

One unfixed female can have 3-4 litters a year. At 4-6 kittens per litter, a Tom cat and Queen can have 12-24 kittens in one year!😧

😻✂️Spaying and neutering not only saves lives by preventing accidental litters, but it can save YOUR cat’s life too.

❤️‍🩹Health benefits of spaying or neutering your cat include:

• Reducing the risk of testicular cancer in male cats, and reducing the risk of uterine infections, ovarian cancer, and mammary cancer in female cats,

• Reducing and, in most cases, eliminating territorial urine marking,

• Reducing yowling, howling, escaping the home to find a mate, and other behavioral changes associated with intact females going into their “heat” cycles,

• Reducing aggression and fighting in male cats (fighting Tom cats are at increased risk for contacting FeLV, FIV, and rabies through bite wounds; these viruses can be spread to the females they mate with too),

• Reduces wandering and becoming nuisances to neighbors who might poison, shoot, or otherwise harm them,

• Fixed cats are often more relaxed and affectionate!

🏜🐱 In Arizona, “kitten season” is between February and November as this time frame is when our local shelters become inundated with pregnant cats and litters of kittens. But if the climate is warm enough, cats will have litters all year long.

✂️Please consider spaying and neutering your cats and helping cats in your local community by TNR’ing them (Trap Neuter Return).

+PAWS+itive adoptions in January (Part 8, final) 🐾 Zena, Sandy, Kibbles, Biscuit, Bolter, Rafiki, and Big Mama!

We are grateful for those that can open their hearts and homes to adopting FeLV and FIV positive kitties. All kitties deserve safe and loving homes, regardless of whether they are positive or not.

Many shelters across the country euthanize cats and kittens simply for testing positive for these viruses. But at Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue, we do not.

We work hard to educate people and end the stigma against FeLV and FIV positive cats. When positive cats leave our shelter, they are healthy. Simply testing positive for these viruses does not mean that they are sick.

With quality care, love, and regular vet visits, they may never show symptoms of disease. It's even possible for positive cats to become negative later in life! 🤯 Love truly is an immune-booster! 🩷

One of our best adoption success stories so far this year has to be our sweet boy, Freddy 🧡

Whether you're a staff member, volunteer, or visitor, pretty much everyone knows Freddy. He had been with us at the shelter for 5 and half years (due to medical reasons).

Freddy kept us all on our toes. He was the "office cat" at our Youngtown Adoption Center for a long time. As a "door dasher" he frequently tried to run out the front door (and even succeeded a few times 🤣). Because of his recurring medical issues, he was transferred to our Peoria shelter for the remainder of his stay.

He would wander the halls and greet everyone that came in. Sit long enough and he's in your lap, kneading and drooling all over you with happiness. He loved chasing toys down the hallway, especially ping pong balls.

At Sun Cities 4 Paws, there is no time limit on a cat's stay with us. We provide love, care, and shelter until adoption!

We thank his adopter for working with our staff and for giving Freddy a chance at his furever home. Good luck, Freddy! We love you! 🧡

January adoptions! (Part 5) 😻🐾 Cannellini, Minthara, Chestnut, Maximilian, Cherry Garcia (foster fail 🩷 ), Conoco & Carlotta (adopted together). Shadowheart, Karlach, AND Helsin were all adopted together!

For those that are new to our page, a "foster fail" is when a foster parent "fails" to adopt their kittens/cats to someone else and decides to keep them! We love it!

We thank all of our fosters for their time, dedication, and love for the hundreds of kittens that come in to our shelter every year needing help on their journey to finding their furever homes. You are the backbone of the animal rescue world. Thank you!

+Paws-itively adorable!+ 😻 🐾 Come meet our FeLV+ kittens at the Youngtown Adoption Center!

Benny Buttons, Godzilla, Texas, and Big'N are all 6 months old and were all lovingly raised in their foster home from birth.

Big'N is, you guessed it, the biggest kitten in the litter. He is very playful, rambunctious, and a little bit domineering over his siblings. He loves cat trees, as you can see! He has a funny hairline and tabby stripes on his throat!

Benny Buttons has cool markings too! He's called a "black tabby" as he is mostly black with tabby stripes peeking through his coat. A total sweetie!

Godzilla is a ferocious name for such a sweet, little girl! She's the only girl in the litter. She's playful and likes to wrestle with her brothers. She very good about using her scratching posts and cardboard scratchers according to her foster mom!

And Texas loves to snuggle. He's sweet and mellow, but can definitely get going when the toys come out!
