Reminder: It's hot!

It might be surprising to hear that dogs are getting walked mid-day in the middle of summer, during 100+ degree temperatures, but unfortunately it is happening.

Dogs paws are sensitive and can easily get burned on the hot ground. Burns are a serious situation and should be taken care of by a vet, because they can quickly become infected. Save your dogs the pain and yourself the vet bills.

The best time of day to walk your dogs during the summer is early morning, just before or just after sunrise. It is still going to be hot out, so make sure you have plenty of water for your dog and yourself. But with the sun being down all night, the ground won't be hot.

Remember, if the ground is too hot for you to walk barefoot on, it's too hot for your dog.

Want an easy, delicious homemade treat for your beloved dogs?

This treat calls for only TWO ingredients!

You'll need 2 cups of whole wheat flour and 8 ounces of sweet potato puree. Just make sure the puree is pure and not full of additives!

INSTRUCTIONS:

~ Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
~ Line your baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
~ In a large bowl, whisk the flour and sweet potato until blended. If the mixture becomes too thick you can add up to a tablespoon of water.
~ When the dough is ready, roll it on a clean, floured surface. You'll want the dough to be 1/2'' thick.
~ Use your favorite cook cutter!
~ Space the cookies out evenly on the prepared sheet.
~ Bake until golden brown, approximately 20-25 minutes.

TIPS:

~ Remember, every dog can be affected differently with foods. Start off with a small amount to see how your dog's belly handles the treat.
~ Always feed in moderation.
~ The sweet potato puree can be substituted with pure pumpkin puree.

Another holiday is upon us!

We can all look forward to delicious foods! Your dogs can enjoy the festivities too! Just make sure you're giving them the right kind of treats!

Foods that are safe to share with your dog include turkey, green beans, corn, pure pumpkin puree and plain sweet potatoes!

Foods to avoid include meat bones, bread, raw meat, desserts, gravy, onion and spices.

If you have anything else to share be sure to do some research first! Better safe than sorry!

We all love our pets and want to keep them safe, and door safety is a big consideration for that! Especially during Halloween!

With the door opening and closing to trick-or-treaters you want to make sure your pets don't dash out! For the night, if possible make a barrier around your front door that you can easily get over but your pet can't. Whether you already have pet gates in the home or need to get creative, this will be one of the best ways to keep them inside!

You can also secure your pets inside another room of the house. This will not only keep them safe inside but may help with any anxiety they can get from the excitement and noise of the night. Playing music or having a tv on in the room with them would be an extra comfort for them.

Should the worst happen and your pet escapes the home, be proactive in getting them home by ensuring their collars with ID tags are on and any microchip information is up to date. It's also not a bad idea to get them microchipped if they aren't already!

The best part of Halloween is all the yummy treats! Candy, pumpkin pie, Candied Apples - anything your heart desires for the spooky season!

We all know these foods are not safe for our beloved dogs, but that doesn't mean they can't have their own goodies!

Below is a super simple, 3 ingredient recipe for delicious doggie treats!

INGREDIENTS:

~ 1 cup of fresh, cooked pumpkin OR unsweetened canned pumpkin (make sure it is pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling)
~ 2 cups whole wheat flour
~ 1 egg

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
2. Beat the egg and mix it with the pumpkin.
3. Gradually stir in the flour.
4. Once everything is mixed well, transfer it to a nonstick surface.
5. Wash your hands and the kneed to ensure everything is mixed well.
6. Use a rolling pin and make the dough 1/2" thick. **Sprinkle a little bit of flour on the surface and rolling pin to make this part easier!
7. Move the dough onto a cutting board and cut the dough into even squares (3/4" for small dogs or 1" for medium to large dogs). **A pizza cutter will make this part easier!
8. Bake from approximately 30 minutes, until golden brown and crunchy!

**If you have fun shaped cookie cutters feel free to use those but remember this may affect baking time! Be sure to keep an eye on the treats so they don't burn.

**Keep treats stored in an airtight container. They will last for about a week. To extend their life by a little more, store them in the fridge. If you want to make extra treats you can store them in the freezer for 6 months, just be sure to thaw before feeding!
