Apollo Update:
Last night was Apollo’s last dose of pain meds and he’s doing great! He’s eating well but still hasn’t pooped since he’s been with me 😳 so I’ve added fiber to his diet. Hopefully things will start moving soon! He comes out from under the bed when I call him a couple of times and loves to get pets. He’s tired of the wound care but they’re healing nicely so he won’t need that for too much longer. Last night I even saw him groom himself a bit!

Tuesday Tip
It’s ok (and even normal) to have a dog that’s unsure of new people. Don’t force them to be ok because it can cause aggression and even more fearfulness. Slow introductions are best. Make the newcomer sit down so they seem less threatening. Let them approach you. It’s completely normal for them to sniff you with their neck stretched way out then run away. Ignore them. Once they feel more comfortable try using a calm, quiet voice and avoid eye contact as it makes many dogs nervous. Give them small treats to help “win them over” if they’re food motivated. I often find working with very nervous or fearful dogs that more than one introduction is necessary. Don’t give up! You never know when they’ll turn around and be your best friend because once they trust you, you’re golden!

I can’t tell you how happy I am! This little boy could not walk at all and needed to be propped up so he won’t fall over…. Fast forward a few months later after several meds and he’s “running” around the room again! So glad I didn’t give up on my little Ruby.

Today marks a VERY special day! One year ago today our girl came into our lives and filled our hearts with such joy and our home with laughter! I’ll never quite understand why she kept getting returned to the rescue but I’m so grateful! I think it means that she was definitely meant to be our girl! Happy 1st Gotcha Day Calliope! We love you so much! 💗

After my injury I honestly I didn’t know if I’d ever get to see this big baby again. 200 pounds is an awful lot to handle with one hand! I’m so grateful that I have some truly amazing clients and that they’re ok with me just taking him out back as opposed to our walks. I’m also grateful that I’ve improved enough to be able to do that at least, although I do miss our long walks.

PLEASE don’t wait until tonight to get anti anxiety medicine for your dogs! Fireworks will start TONIGHT and I can not tell you how many pets go missing because they’re in “flight mode” due to fear. If you love your pets KEEP THEM INDOORS!!!

Tips to help keep your pet safe and calm during the fireworks:

1- Keep indoors at all times. Keep doors and windows closed not only to create a sound barrier but also to prevent them from getting out. Just because the noise is coming from outside does not mean they’re not going to try to run outside! That is what flight mode is- Run for your dear life!
2-Keep confined in basement or crate with cover on 3 sides of possible. (Please don’t do if you don’t have AC.) Crates are a safe space and if your dog is used to it covering it creates a den-like atmosphere.
3- Talk to your vet about prescribing anti anxiety meds to keep your pet calm during the fireworks. Most drugs need time to take affect so best given 30-60 minutes prior to dusk or dark, depending on where you live.
4- Provide soothing music such as classical or country or the tv on (preferably not on a fireworks show!) Background sound can help soothe and drown out the loud bangs.
5- Try a “thundershirt.” It provides light pressure on pressure points in the abdomen to help keep your dog calm. Sorry, I don’t believe they have any for cats.
6- Give your dog a special treat such as a peanut butter filled Kong or bone, or lick mat (available for dogs and cats.) Chewing and licking are your dog’s natural way of calming themself.
7- If possible, stay home with your pet to give them extra reassurance.
