Years ago I used to work with sharks at the Virginia Marine Science Center (now known as the Virginia Aquarium). Statistics show that a person who goes to beaches will be attacked by a shark is 1 in 11.5 million, and a person's chance of getting killed by a shark is less than 1 in 264.1 million. Such an unfortunate and tragic story. 😥

Jahmari Reid, a 16-year-old boy, was attacked and killed by a shark in Jamaica on Monday, multiple outlets reported.

Meet Casanova, our Grand Cayman Blue Iguana x. Grand Cayman Blue Iguanas (Cyclura lewisi) are a critically endangered species whose numbers once dropped to as low as around 10 individuals. In 2002, they were considered functionally extinct. Due to concentrated conservation efforts (thanks International Iguana Foundation and US zoos!), there is an estimated 450 now in the wild. While the numbers are growing, they are still critically endangered and still face daily threats from being hit by cars, predation from feral cats and dogs, habitat loss, and shooting by farmers. Crystal and Curt from the zoo got an awesome opportunity last night to hang out with the lead singer of STRETCH! Not just a rock band, STRETCH has done multiple appearances and shows for the Food Network, Animal Planet, the Travel Channel, Discovery Channel and Spike TV. We look forward to having STRETCH at the zoo as our guest, but since he has been known to eat iguanas, staff will be diligent in counting the iguanas before STRETCH leaves the building! 😂 Hey, anyone that sings about hating the HOA is down with us. 😂😂😂

Back when I was filming about Indian Rhinos. Oh, the animal adventures I have had! Once down to 100 in number, there is now around 4,000. Conservation efforts are working and ongoing. Mothers give birth to one calf every 2 to 3 years.

"Mind your own business!"

That's the look I get from one of our three toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis) surrenders. These box turtles can range from Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Louisiana and Alabama. If taken care of properly, they can easily live 50 years or more. Never take a box turtle from the wild; be responsible and get captive bred!

Since it has become national news, I'm sure you heard that the Florida FWC wants to put golf courses, pickle ball courts, hotels, etc on our protected Florida state parks. There are already over 1200 golf courses in Florida. Why do we need more?! Especially on land with endangered plant and animal life on it. Did you know one of the FWC commissioners, Gary Nicklaus is the son of golf course developer, Jack Nicklaus?! Whom they want to hire to bulldoze the land to build those golf courses. Gee, no conflict of interest there. 🙄 I thought FWC stood for Florida WILDLIFE Commission. Not Florida Real Estate Development Commission. Yet, these appointed (not voted in) directors, members, etc are real estate developers. 🤔

Unfortunate update: the second little bat passed away right after I got off the phone with a bat vet/rehabilitator. I'm heartbroken! I wish I knew why they are passing away.

Update: now the alive one is trembling like he's in pain and lying on some weeds in the full son. I don't think he's going to make it. 😭😭😭 What's wrong with our bats here?! 😭
Sadly, something is wrong with the bats on Lake St in Perry. Wildlife rehabilitation friends...there has been an "unalive" bat for a few days by Family Furniture. Now there is a live one in distress in front of the zoo. Disease? Someone messed with their home? I don't know. But any advice on whom to contact would be phenomenal. I would hate to see more bats die as they are so important to our ecosystems. Thanks in advance for any help!

I have always been taught it was named after men's sock garters back in the day. However, I suppose they could be interchangeable!

It’s not a garder snake. It's not a guarder snake. It’s not a garden snake. It’s not a gardner snake. It’s not a gardener snake. It’s a GARTER snake!

There are several species and subspecies of garter snakes in the US. They were named for the garters women used to wear to hold up their stockings. Garters had three straps and garter snakes have three stripes. Hence, garter snakes. (Although you may also find them in your garden.) 😉

Due to family illness and a car wreck one of my boys was in, we had to take a Facebook hiatus. I just want to give a shout out to Hannah, for stepping up and helping us out at a festival during this tough time for our family. We are so grateful for Hannah! Thank you Hannah Chew!
