Nose work is an awesome way to help a reactive dog chill out and feel more confident. Here’s why it’s so effective:

Takes their mind off triggers: When your dog is focused on sniffing out a scent, they’re way less likely to get reactive. It gives them something positive to concentrate on instead of whatever is stressing them out.

Boosts confidence: Every time they successfully find a scent, it’s like a little win for them. Over time, they start feeling more sure of themselves, which is great if they’re nervous or anxious.

Mental workout: Sniffing around for scents is tiring in a good way! It works their brain, which helps burn off some energy and reduces stress.

Encourages independence: While they’re hunting for a scent, they’re making decisions on their own, which can really help a shy dog feel more in control.

Safe and low pressure: Nose work can be done in a calm environment, so your dog doesn’t have to deal with other distractions. This makes it easier for them to focus and relax.

Strengthens your bond: Doing nose work together builds trust and improves how you communicate with each other.

Overall, it’s a fun, low-stress way to help your dog work through reactivity while gaining confidence. Plus, they get to use their natural sniffing skills, which makes them super happy!

If we control the environment we can control the dog. Limit the reinforcement by thinking smarter and using the environment. Being mindful about how you handle the leash and use of x-pens and backties to help with these interactions.

Maryland are you ready for Grassroots K9?

Grassroots K9 aims to provide a friendly inviting experience for everything dog! Head Trainer and Founder Michael Nezbeth established Grassroots K9 with one goal in mind.. provide custom training to his clients lifestyle and needs from the K9. This vision was created when Michael became a father. He desired to have a family friendly dog and one that would protect his house hold if needed. Through vigorous studying and training, Michael used his background in Psychology and Sociology to create Grassroots K9. Since his startup Michael has successfully worked with the everyday household pets to military trained K9’s. His diverse training has aided police force K9's, numerous households and their pets. Grassroots K9 is established to meet the increasing demand for expert training for dogs in all disciplines.

With now expanding to Maryland, Grassroots K9 is happy to announce that Trainer Kelsey Como will be running and operating this location. She has dedicated years to learning and understanding dog behaviour. Her apprenticeship under Michael Nezbeth has taught her valuable skills that she is looking forward to sharing with all her clients in Maryland.

The in depth knowledge of animal behaviour allows us to develop a customized training program designed for each client and their dog. We believe dog behavioural issues generally come from three main areas:

  • nutrition;
