Ranch horses are tough.
Hours and hours, days and days, spent in a trailer getting drug all over the country. Hills, gravel roads, rough feed roads, and the list goes on. Packing a saddle and bridle for the entire day’s duty.
At any moment in time they can be backed out, cinch pulled tight, and a new job thrown at them.
The trailer is their “break” and even the break is constant work just to stay on their feet.
You want to know why ranch horses are worth so much money? ….. Its because they are TOUGH. They spend years doing this. And you want to know why they make some of the best performance horses on the road. …….They can hold up to hard days. They can handle the travel. Appreciate any kind of water to drink, no matter the smell.
There are just somethings you can’t breed into one who will live inside of a stall and “cut his teeth” in the arena! If you have a young prospect you are just starting…. Send him to big country. Send him off to a hand (oh yeah, not every ranch cowboy is a hand with a horse) who will use him more than 30 minutes a day. Send them where shoes are earned, not given!
Just food for thought!
