Did you know that dental disease is very common in our pets?! According to Cornell University 80-90% of dogs over the age of three have some level of dental disease! It is even more common in smaller breeds and older dogs.

This poor pup came in with an accumulation of dental tartar that required a full dental cleaning. During dental cleanings we examine each tooth invidually just like your human dentist. The teeth are probed for pockets and cavities and dental charts are recorded. To our surprise the heavy dental tartar hid a bigger issue. There was a large cavity along the upper premolar. Unfortunately this tooth had such a significant change it needed to be removed for our patient’s health and overall comfort. The good news is that we were able to surgically extract the tooth and our patient healed well!

We are often asked “why does my dog have dental disease?” Well there are many factors that can affect your pet.
Risk factors
🪥Size: Smaller dogs, like Chihuahuas, Poodles, and Yorkshire Terriers, are more likely to have dental disease.
🪥Age: Dental disease is more likely to affect older dogs.
🪥Breed: Flat-faced breeds, like Bulldogs, Boxers, and French Bulldogs, are more likely to have dental disease.
🪥Genetics: Some dog breeds are more likely to have dental disease due to genetics.

Symptoms of dental disease include: Tooth loss, Gingivitis, Plaque and tartar build-up, Pain when touching the affected area, and Loss of appetite.

There are some ways you can help your pup at home.
🪥Brush your dog's teeth daily. If your dog does not like a toothbrush there are wipes which are often well-tolerated.
🪥Feed your dog dental-formulated food and treats. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) provides a list of products veterinary dentists have proven to be safe and effective!
