At just 8 weeks old, we saw this sweet Redbone Coonhound puppy, Pancake, for a painful mouth. After a comprehensive oral assessment under anesthesia, Dr. Carter discovered that in addition to an overbite, Pancake had a fractured lower left jaw.

This pup-cake is feeling much "batter" now! 🥞 🐾 We will see her again in a few months to assess the development of her permanent teeth. Thank you to Dr. Silva with Animal Hospital of Cloverdale for entrusting us with Pancake’s care!

Check out Duke and his shiny new crowns! Duke was adopted with severely worn teeth (abrasion) to the point there was pulp exposure of all 4 canine teeth. Rather than removing these strategic teeth, we performed root canal therapy and placed metal crowns that would be more resistant to wear and allow him to enjoy a pain-free and more durable mouth.

We extend a huge thank you to Creature Crowns for helping us add a little sparkle to Duke’s smile! And a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kureshi from Cupertino Animal Hospital and Duke’s family for giving us the opportunity to care for him.

Annabelle never fails to impress with her ever-changing bow collection 🎀

This adorable 10-month old Shih Tzu was referred to our clinic by Dr. Hart at Alderbrook Pet Hospital. Annabelle had a few dental issues, including retained baby teeth, undererupted adult teeth, missing adult teeth, and some trauma to the floor her mouth due to her underbite.

Under the expert care of Dr. Hannahbess Thomson-Laing, Annabelle underwent a successful procedure to address these concerns. All remaining baby teeth were extracted to pave the way for proper dental development and a healthy bite.

We are happy to report that Annabelle is healing beautifully! Sporting a new bow and a radiant smile, she's ready to spread joy wherever she goes! Thank you Dr. Hart for trusting us with Annabelle's care!

This cheetah's fur wasn't the only thing marked with spots! Baruti is a 4 year-old 97lbs cheetah who was referred by Dr. Famini to see Dr. Carter to address the complicated crown fracture on his upper right canine tooth and the uncomplicated crown fracture with near pulp exposure of his upper left canine tooth. Recognizing the importance of preserving these teeth for Baruti's well-being as a wild cat, the Wild Cat Education & Conservation Fund decided to proceed with root canal therapy on both teeth.

With the assistance of Dr. Famini, Brianna & Kelly, Baruti was carefully monitored under anesthesia while Dr. Carter performed the endodontic treatment.

This adorable cat, Stinky, was referred to Dr. Hannahbess Thomson-Laing by Dr. Rathie with Banfield Pet Hospital for a firm rostral mandibular mass. Dr. Hannahbess took a biopsy of the mass and extracted the associated incisors.

In a charming twist, this whiskered friend was previously known as Typo for his extra toes. However, by the time of discharge, his parents had affectionately renamed him Stinky! 🐱🐾

Meet the resilient 1 year old frenchie who stole our hearts, Frank ❤️

Just two weeks ago, Dr. Dogra with Animal Medical Center of San Rafael referred Frank to us after he fell from a wash tub. Dental x-rays revealed his lower jaw was fractured.

His journey to recovery has been nothing short of inspiring, and we couldn't be happier with his progress. From the moment he walked through our doors, his determination to heal was evident, and we're honored to have been a part of his journey back to health.

Frank loves chewing on pinecones, so a huge shoutout to Mom and Dad for their incredible dedication in ensuring he steers clear of chewing on hard all objects 🙌 Their careful attention has undoubtedly aided in his speedy recovery process. Welcome back Timbit! 🐶

This adorable whiskered friend first visited our clinic 6 months ago for a comprehensive cleaning and assessment. After a closer look using our cone beam CT scan, we found he needed a few extractions and root canal treatment for his lower right canine tooth. Since this procedure, Timbit's parents have been committed to maintaining his oral health with daily brushing and scheduling his follow-up cleanings. We are happy to report his teeth look great! 🦷 ✨

Meet Fletcher, one of our resilient whiskered friends who was referred to us by Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital for an apparent rapidly growing oral mass behind his upper left 2nd & 3rd incisors. In a textbook scenario, we would perform pre-surgical staging (comprehensive blood and urine testing, 3 view chest radiographs and an abdominal ultrasound) to make sure there is no evidence of metastatic disease (cancer that has spread) followed by anesthesia, 3D imaging and biopsy collection. After an accurate diagnosis, we would schedule a 2nd anesthetic event for surgery with appropriate margins to eliminate the growth for the best outcome.

A textbook approach is great, but sometimes we face obstacles where we need to take another approach. Cost or the concern for multiple anesthetic events can be a barrier to treatment. We discussed all options with Fletcher’s owners and decided to remove the mass rather than just a piece of it for a biopsy. The goal would be providing the chance at a cure without disfigurement while determining what it was.

It worked out well in this case as the tumor came back as a peripheral odontogenic fibroma which is a slow growing mass that has not been reported to spread. They originate from the periodontal ligament and can be resolved by getting narrow margins with removal of the tooth or teeth involved. Had it been something more aggressive, we would have to perform the testing we discussed before as well as a surgery to get wider margins.

The moral of this story is we listen to our clients and are able to consider different ways of achieving a desired outcome.

Fletcher is doing great and everyone is relieved!

Happy National Black Cat Day 🐈‍⬛🖤 To help us celebrate this day, here are Heather & Marisa‘s kitties - Charlie & Kitty!

Charlie finds joy sprinting around the house at 2am (making as much noise as possible) and meowing non-stop when somebody is standing in the kitchen. Aside from her wild side, she is one of the most loving kitties out there, always wanting to cuddle.

Kitty spends her days laying in laundry baskets (whether they are clean or dirty) and basking in the sun. She also usually prefers the company of dogs versus other cats.

Autumn the friendly ghost is here to remind you to chooOoOse your treats wisely! 👻 🐶

This season kicks off that time of the year when some of our furry friends decide to get into some treats that may be toxic, like chocolate. Although this is definitely a concern, there is another thing to consider that may be even spookier than this! Any food, treat, or toy your whiskered friend has should be bendable and able to be intended with your thumbnail. Otherwise, it may lead to a broken tooth! 🦷 😱

If you are searching for a dental treat for your furry friend, we recommend checking out vohc.org for a list of dental products that have proven by the Veterinary Oral Health Council for cats and dogs 🐱 🐶 to meet their label claims. Although dental treats and water additives don't replace brushing the teeth, it may slow down the progression of disease. The VOHC does not determine if the treats will have potential to break teeth so be sure to test them by bending and indenting right out of the package.
