As summers continue to get warmer year-over-year, new research from the Penn Vet Working Dog Center (PVWDC) reveals the best way to prevent dogs from overheating.

After comparing various cooling methods, researchers found when a dog voluntarily submerged their head in clean, room-temperature water to retrieve a treat or toy, they not only cooled off faster, but also avoided dangerous post-exercise temperature spikes.

“During heat stress, blood flow to the head, nose, tongue, and ears is increased,” said Cynthia M. Otto, VMD, PhD, lead author of the study and executive director of the PVWDC. “Cooling the tissues of the head allows for rapid cooling of the whole body with limited amounts of water.”

You and your pup will learn the Fundamentals of coming when called, how to avoid the common mistakes people make and you will gain the skills to practice with your pup outside of class to help improve reliability. We will work foundation skills out and about adding distance and distractions to increase the challenge, and improve your team’s reliability at this very important skill.

You've been asking and here is the update for summer Scenting class
Scents & Scent-ability
Wednesdays July 10th - Aug 7th, 2024
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

There's a whole lot of sniffing going on! This 5 week class is exciting for both dog and handler and is based on scent detection training (taught by our CSDT Certified Sport Detection Trainer) and focus on developing your dog's natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt.
Scent work can help develop confidence even in the most timid dogs and the mental and physical exercise of searching and problem-solving is great for calming the energetic, highly aroused, or even reactive dogs. Another benefit is the positive relationship that develops between you and your dog when you are out "hunting" together. The structure of the workshop dictates that one dog works at a time. Other dogs will remain secured in a crate, staging area or in car (weather permitting) until their turn
