As summers continue to get warmer year-over-year, new research from the Penn Vet Working Dog Center (PVWDC) reveals the best way to prevent dogs from overheating.

After comparing various cooling methods, researchers found when a dog voluntarily submerged their head in clean, room-temperature water to retrieve a treat or toy, they not only cooled off faster, but also avoided dangerous post-exercise temperature spikes.

“During heat stress, blood flow to the head, nose, tongue, and ears is increased,” said Cynthia M. Otto, VMD, PhD, lead author of the study and executive director of the PVWDC. “Cooling the tissues of the head allows for rapid cooling of the whole body with limited amounts of water.”

Scents & Scent-ability
Wednesdays July 10th - Aug 7th, 2024
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

There's a whole lot of sniffing going on! This 5 week class is exciting for both dog and handler and is based on scent detection training (taught by our CSDT Certified Sport Detection Trainer) and focus on developing your dog's natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt.
Scent work can help develop confidence even in the most timid dogs and the mental and physical exercise of searching and problem-solving is great for calming the energetic, highly aroused, or even reactive dogs. Another benefit is the positive relationship that develops between you and your dog when you are out "hunting" together. The structure of the workshop dictates that one dog works at a time. Other dogs will remain secured in a crate, staging area or in car (weather permitting) until their turn

We just got an opening in our tricks class starting this week.
Roll Over Rover
Wednesday September 21st - October 19th (skip date October 5th)
6:30 pm - 7:20 pm
This 4 week class will show you how to teach you pup tricks that are sure to be a hit at your Howliday parties!
The class focus on not only teaching tricks but also on teaching you basic techniques of how to teach tricks to dogs. Once you understand how to train a trick there is no limit to what you can teach your dog to do. Physical & Mental Stimulation: This training class offers you and your dog many wonderful benefits. Dogs need both physical and mental stimulation in order to be emotionally and mentally happy and healthy – teaching them tricks gives them an outlet for both. Many dogs develop behavior problems because their mental energy is not being focused in a positive direction, even if they’re being physically challenged every day.

Most of you know this is one of the things I talk about all the time.

For clients, family or friends who have apprehension about dog crates. Here is the reality of crate training.
After a recent wild fire evacuation these crate trained dogs were the ones that got to stay in the shelter with their families.
Their families trained them in advance to appreciate the safety and comfort of their crate homes and stay settled and not be disruptive.

"Train for the moment not the minute "
Teaching your dog to love and be settled in their crate is a gift, and in some cases can actually be life saving.

Do you want your pup to the skills to be appropriate around people and other dogs you encounter out and about, at stores and sporting events? Would you like your pup to be able to hang at Brewster’s while you enjoy a pint? Our Pups Out and About class is designed just for that goal: Helping you and your pup learn the skills to have enjoyable outings together. • Each session will include an outdoor adventure. Pups Out & About classes will include visits to puppy-friendly stores (banks, hardware stores, coffee shops, and more), different neighborhoods or local vet offices.
