Regular ol' peeps volunteering time & aiming to better the lives of the animals that call PACC home. We have simple goals.

Central VA Friends of Petersburg Animal Care and Control is an all volunteer group of people that strive to better the lives of the animals being housed temporarily at the Petersburg Animal Care and Control (PACC) municipal, city run shelter. There are thousands of animals in the state of Virginia that are homeless for a multitude of reasons. Assisting the animals in the care of PACC find their f

orever families by informing the public and rescue groups about the animals. We do this by publicizing the animals with photos and giving as much information as we can about each animal's temperament. Again, we are volunteers and not professionals. We can not guarantee any assessments made by our volunteers based on limited interactions in an environment that may be uncomfortable and unfamiliar to the animal. We will not be responsible for assessing the age, health or temperament of animals.
2. Enriching the lives of the animals through human contact. This may include walks, play time or simply sitting with each animal.
3. Educating the public about the needs of companion animals in order to live side by side with their owners in the community safely and happily

We are not employed by the city of Petersburg or by PACC. We can not make any decisions about the availability of any animals. We can not set up appointments nor can we decide the outcome of any application for adoption. We can not pick up stray animals and do not know if a lost pet is at the shelter. We can not enforce any laws set forth by the city of Petersburg or the state of Virginia regarding companion animals. We will do our best to keep this page updated with animals available for adoption but we are not at the shelter on a daily bases and may not know when new animals come into PACC or when animals have been adopted and have left the shelter. ⭐️Foster Friday Spotlight: Sparrow! ⭐️

Say hello to Sparrow, a roughly 1-year-old male pup who’s a true survivor. Rescued from a cruel past, where he was found with one of the heaviest logging chains we’ve ever seen, without food, water, or love, Sparrow is now thriving in his foster home. He has discovered toys and absolutely adores hanging out on his dog bed chewing on squeaky stuffies. He loves long walks and snuggles with people, and his sweet, gentle, and affectionate nature shines through every day. 🐶❤️

🐼 Meet Bamboo: The Cuddly Panda Dog! 🐼

This young, black and white, panda-like pup is bursting with affection and ready to warm your heart in no time. Bamboo is known for his gentle demeanor, making fast friends with every dog he meets—and even had a kitten as his best buddy before coming to us! 🐶🐱

Not intentionally, we seem to give less attention to our feline friends. We guess there's something to be said about the 'squeaky wheel' and these patient friends are just not as loud and squeaky! They are definitely just as adorable and deserving so we are gonna speak up and squeak for them!! Here is a quick spot light on the meow purrrr, cutie booties looking for their happily ever after!

Emily🙏 HELP!
This is a desperate plea for our sweet Emily, the longest resident of PACC!!!She needs a miracle now, a rescue, transfer, or adoption to save her life. Emily came into the shelter 15 months ago and has endured so much, only to find herself on borrowed time now due to space which breaks our hearts!
She was rescued by a good Samaritan who found her tied up outside and hung up on the fence. She would have been strangled if they had not intervened.

She came into the shelter scared of everything and everyone, she had clearly spent her young life on this tie out with little to no knowledge of the outside world and then there she sat, waiting to be rescued from this scary place. Her rescue has not come, and its not fair for her to live her life in a shelter environment. Emily is one of those dogs that becomes invisible and blends in with all the other countless dogs that come through the shelter. Despite attempts to be seen, she is passed over again and again maybe because people think is nothing so remarkable about her that she doesn’t stand out and therefore doesn’t get seen.

She was unintentionally failed by us too, never getting to go to any events, hardly getting out, as it was thought she was too nervous, too scared to go and thought it would be better for her not to so still she sat, waiting for a chance to be seen and not forgotten. A couple of month ago, a volunteer took her on a walk away from the shelter and found the further away she got, the calmer and better she became. When the next event came up last month, we took her, and found out that she was really amazing!! So sweet and friendly!

She engaged and loved every person she met, young or old, and the best part, she relaxed! She was still nervous and barked at other dogs, but only if they breached her inner threshold, not aggressive, reactive. Can you blame her? 15 months of open kennels, and forced to endure dogs of all kinds coming and going, some not so friendly. We truly feel that a proper decompression period and some patience and training could resolve this, but she needs someone to give her a chance. People, however, she loves them all and would make an excellent companion to a family that just wants one family dog. She loves to go for walks and walks well on leash after the initial energy burst that will decrease with consistent exercise. She loves to go for car rides and is an excellent passenger!!

She is urgent and out of time and barely had a chance, so we are begging for her!! She deserves as much as any to get out and it’s not fair to leave her there with no interest. She has survived so much, parvo, kennel cough outbreaks, open kennels and the constant stress and chaos of an overcrowded shelter.

This girl has so much heart, resilience and a light about her that just makes you smile. She is a petite girl, about 45-50 pounds, maybe 2-3 years old and has a cute ear flop, one ear up and one ear down!

Cruelty Case Boys - Squash, Sparrow, Teefers, Ziggy - Please Help Us Help Them!!

Friday September 27th should have been a chance to finally exhale and feel relief. At 5:00 it was finally over. No more chances for appeal. Squash, Sparrow, Teefers and Ziggy will never have to go back to their chained up, unprotected, back yard hell. Unfortunately, instead of relief we feel broken, as our sweetest Squash landed in the ICU on Thursday night, struggling to breath, unable to hold his head up and lethargic. He had an elevated temperature of 105.7, fluid in his lungs and a life threateningly low white blood cell count. To add to our fears, Teefers and Ziggy have started to show signs of respiratory illness. We are crushed but refuse to give up on our strong little warriors, as long as they're willing to keep fighting we will be doing the same right by their sides. Squash is urgent and needs our IMMEDIATE help, today he stopped eating and still as an elevated temperature, but in perfect Squishy Squash fashion, his tail is still bopping under his blanket, still begging for attention and his medical team is hopeful.

🌟 This goofy girl came into the shelter as a young pup and has blossomed in her foster home, learning all the good manners a young lady should. She is crate trained and housebroken.

Daisy is a superstar with other dogs and LOVES to play! Whether it’s rolling around in the grass with a doggo friend or going full WWE smackdown mode, she’s ready for it all! 🐶💥

Lenny Babes

We tried to keep up and say thank you to everyone who helped Mr Lenny Bear Wiggle Butt Baby Cakes Muffin Pants get neutered! It's done! He's chillin' with one of our volunteers, decompressing a touch before he goes to Troubled Tails , a newly minted 501c3 from our friends at established Letteer Dog Training. Please give them a like and share 😜. So THANK YOU, everyone!!! It is really incredible to have such a caring, step up to the plate, let's do this thing, community behind us. Lenny will be headed to Troubled Tails on August 17th and will be there for close to a week. We will update everyone on his progress and assessment. Once done, Lenny will need a foster or adopter. Unfortunatly our current team of AMAZING foster families is up to their gills. Our hearts may shatter if he has to go back to the shelter. Some animals just have a harder time in that environment than others. Please reach out if interested!
