Our canine family members provide us with love and companionship every day, but some dogs are trained to perform specific tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability. September is National Service Dog Month and these are just some of the ways service dogs assist their owners:
Guide dogs: Help visually impaired individuals navigate.
Hearing dogs: Alert deaf or hard-of-hearing people to sounds.
Mobility assistance dogs: Assist with physical tasks and support.
Medical alert dogs: Like diabetic alert dogs that signal blood sugar issues or seizure response dogs that alert and assist during seizures.
Psychiatric service dogs: Can interrupt behaviors, provide pressure during anxiety, or remind handlers about medication.
Allergen detection dogs: Alert to allergens.
