When the new pup is learning how to offer a sit to get a treat but the experienced pup lends a paw 😂🤣
Small dogs are just as capable and excited to learn and train as larger dogs. It's so important to find what motivates and drives each individual dog and equally important to let our little ones get in on the fun too! This little man loves learning new tricks and is always excited to show them off.
This little guy super loves the outside world and has a habit of bolting out the door any time his mom opens it. We are breaking it down for him in smaller steps so he can learn how much MORE awesome it is to stay inside the door instead of rushing out. Because he has such a history of door bolting, we are taking it slow to really reinforce that the door does not equal running outside but rather that all good and amazing things happen inside the door and slowly adding in that real life door opening scenario.
Morning sharing circle with name game. Evie is a new rescue and still learning all the things. To help keep mornings calm half of breakfast and reserved for training opportunities like this one! Reinforcing for Name Game or simply pairing their names with a piece of food to really drive home that solid recall and that their name equals something amazing is going to happen. Capturing auto sits or the offered sit without a cue so that we can reinforce the calm sit choice to help bring down the jumping and over exuberant play between these crazies. They all did so super great this morning and day by day Evie is settling in and enjoying the new rescue life.

Starting loose leash walking on a long line is a great option. This will help reduce leash tension and accidental reinforcement for pulling. In this video I reward Tucker every time he checks in and he slowly starts to check in more often! ❤️🐶
Enrichment is important for tiny dogs too! ❤️🐶
Daisy came for day training to brush up on some door manners. She lives with tiny humans and while mom is implementing awesome management strategies for safety, we are working on making waiting inside the threshold the most reinforcing so that we can make sure Daisy stays safe. This is all about reinforcing the desired behavior and setting her up for success. By the end of our session today Daisy did a phenomenal job of offering a down and waiting at the threshold every time even with humans walking outside and neighborhood distractions!
Can we talk about how this sweet girl really thrives on praise and positive reinforcement?! She is a rockstar and I am so proud of her hard work!
It's that time of year again y'all. The fireworks will be happening. If you haven't prepped your dog you are quickly running out of time. You can start desensitization by using YouTube videos on a low volume playing in the background while your dog eats or plays. Be sure to start at a volume that is super low and doesn't startle your dog and slowly work on increasing the volume up to real life. On 4th of July PLEASE make sure you dog is wearing a well fitting collar with an up to date identification tag that includes a way to contact you should your dog need to be returned to you. Please please secure all gates and fences, check for holes, and do your best to keep your dogs inside or actively supervise outside time to prevent any chance of your dog escaping if startled by the loud noises. So many dogs go missing on 4th of July and it is SO important that we do our very best to keep our sweet pups safe. You can use treats to pair with the big sounds to help them be less scary, use your happy voices to reassure your dogs and help them work through any fears. Frozen food puzzles or special chews are a great option for the time during the biggest booms. You can also use a white noise machine or calming dog music (there are YouTube lists and Spotify playlists) to help drown out the sounds while you keep your pup inside as well. Stay safe everyone!
Let's talk Positive Reinforcement! Positive reinforcement training is science backed, effective, and fun for both human and dog! It allows us to focus on reinforcing behaviors we prefer and increasing the likelihood that those behaviors will be repeated. By utilizing the addition of something positive that our dogs love, we not only gain a strong skill set of behavior with our dogs, but we also gain an incredible bond built on trust and cooperation. This improves long term behavior and provides amazing opportunities for mental stimulation for our dogs. Food, praise, play, petting and more can all be reinforcing. Finding what motivates and reinforces your dog is key to unlocking their potential. We also focus on meeting our dogs needs. Dogs are living creatures and as such have their own set of needs just like we do. Mental enrichment is just one of those needs and can be incorporated into your training routine! Management is a skill we utilize to prevent the rehearsal of unwanted or undesirable behaviors while we work on building and reinforcing the more desirable behavior. For example while working on building the skill set to prevent door bolting, we may use a gate or a leash to prevent the dog from rushing out the door until that skill set is solid. This allows the undesirable behavior to be prevented while we intentionally work on the preferred behavior like waiting at the threshold. Stay tuned to learn more!
