The Power of Play: Turning Stress into Joy for Your Dog

Did you know that play can be one of the most effective ways to help your dog navigate stress and build a stronger bond with you? Last night, during the NYE fireworks, I had the pleasure of spending time with a friend’s Irish Setter, redirecting his attention from the loud, overwhelming sounds outside to something much more positive: a game of tug.

Instead of worrying about the booms and bangs, his mind shifted to fun and engagement, staying in the moment with me rather than fixating on the stress around him. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of play.

While obedience training is incredibly valuable (and I highly encourage it for all dogs), play is often an overlooked tool in your training toolbox. Here’s why it’s so important:

1. Play Reduces Stress

Stressful events like fireworks, thunderstorms, or even everyday anxieties can overwhelm your dog. Engaging in play, such as tug or fetch, redirects their energy and focus, helping to alleviate tension and bring them back to a positive state of mind.

2. Play Builds Relevance

When you become the source of your dog’s fun, you become the most interesting and rewarding part of their world. Play strengthens the bond between you and your dog, making you more relevant in their eyes—not just during games but in everyday life and training.

3. Play is a Mental and Physical Workout

Tug, fetch, chase games, or even hide-and-seek are great ways to challenge your dog mentally and physically. These games help burn off energy while keeping their mind sharp and engaged.

4. Play is FUN

Sometimes, we can get so focused on training and structure that we forget one of the best parts of having a dog: having fun together. Play isn’t just good for them—it’s good for us, too. It strengthens the joy we feel when spending time with our dogs.

So, whether you’re teaching obedience or just trying to help your dog through a tough moment, don’t underestimate the value of play. It’s not only a great tool for training and stress relief—it’s a wonderful way to connect, laugh, and enjoy life together.

What’s your dog’s favorite game? Share in the comments—I’d love to hear!

When you have the best clients who aren't phased by a little bit of rain to get in some work with their dog.

I'd rather work in the cold and rain with my favorite people and dogs than sitting dry in a cubicle any day.

Emma and Gus came to us to learn commands, but ended up discovering a newfound sense of confidence along the way!

“Thanks to (Meg’s) guidance, our dog’s behavior has improved significantly, enhancing our overall quality of life. Walking our pup has become a pleasure, and we now navigate public spaces with ease, knowing that her training has instilled a sense of obedience and reliability.
Her passion for dog training is truly commendable, and we feel fortunate to have found such a skilled professional. Our sincerest thanks to Meg, this experience has been worth every penny.”

I’m so grateful for my friend and colleague! From road-tripping in a van across the country, to sharing an Airbnb, to sitting through a seminar together for a week—we can do it all and still want to hang out after! 🤣

Somehow we didn't get an actual picture with the 2 human ends of the leash, but that's ok. I'm sure there will be a next time 💪

Rumour and I just wrapped up an incredible 5 days at Robin MacFarlane’s Train the Trainer E-Cademy! This was my second time attending, and I can’t emphasize enough how much there is to learn from her.

Robin always teaches with such class and extensive knowledge.

This video is so well made and explains how the e-collar truly used to be a shock collar, as that's what it did. But technically has come a long, long way since the 1950s.

We use these collars to communicate with our dogs and to activate a behavior, rather than *stop* a behavior through pain and startling.

Electronic training collars have been in use in the dog training industry for many years, yet few people understand their origins or the original intention t...
