When the phrase "Praise your dog" gets taken literally 😜

Max the Irish Setter is going to live his absolute best life being reliable off leash, and knowing to come when called 10/10 times. After finishing up his puppy program, we were able to jump right into teaching him the e-collar and foundational obedience.

Hollywood dogs live a great life and the House of the Dragon dog is living his best life but a very convincing actor.

Building a foundation of owner engagement, communication, and focus is an important part of any dog training program. It gives us something to build on and a way to "talk" with our dogs. Today Chewie and Foxie began their journey to learn how to pay attention to their owners, and that the burden of responsibility of keeping their home safe from the Boogie Man is not their burden to bear.
Can't wait to share their progress over the next few weeks!

Finished up our regular memorial day tradition at @defiantcrossfit this morning and had Rumour join me! We did
1 mile run
And split with a partner
300 air squats
200 pushups
100 pullups
1 mile run
Rumour held a down-stay while @chelsieruffino and I did the work in the middle.

Day Campers are all out and working! Everyone practices impulse control on their place boards while I work dogs individually. It helps them get used to staying calm and relaxed when seeing other dogs, and the dog who is in an active training session practices listening to the handler when other dogs are around. Very happy with their progress.

Dog training is a family event ❤️

"But huskies can't ever be off leash!"
Yes, they can.

Chase struggles to hold the "down" position, so we're adding some silly distractions for him to enjoy.
Here's a little secret: when I named my business The Composed Canine, it wasn't just to bring imagery of turning a chaotic, neurotic, crazy dog into a calm, poised, and *Composed* dog. It's a reminder to myself and to those who work with me that to be the best dog owner, and coach, and companion to our dogs, we need to demonstrate Composure for them to reflect.
But we get stuck behind desks and computer screens and we lose the ability to move properly. Our dogs know that.
Will taking a dance class or a martial arts class fix your reactive dog? Nope. But, if you're on the journey to helping your dog, then it doesn't hurt to help yourself as well.

This moment of progress is something to cherish
This moment of progress is something to cherish. When they reached out to me for help with their boxers, this may not have seemed possible.
I look forward to continuing their progress ❤️
Y'ALL! I'm so proud of this team. I met Korey at the Subaru dealership when we were both getting work done. He was reading a book and I pretended to be an extrovert and asked what he was reading. Turns out it was a dog training book, and, well, I knew a girl 💅
Lulu came in super dog reactive. Notice them walking around my dog Rumour holding a down-stay (thank you Rumour). She used to pull on the leash and was your typical high energy #australianshepherd with no outlet.
Working through our private lesson program, they're on their way to enjoying life together as a team with a common language and goals.
The work isn't over but I'm so proud of them, of Korey for putting in the work, and can't wait to see them continue their training journey.

Teaching Blue, the blind husky, to come when called using the treat and train.
I like doing this type of exercise with my dogs using their kibble rather than just treats. It's super fun, rewarding, and a more enriching experience than eating out of the food bowl.
I'm amazed at how confident this dog is. I wonder how much is genetics, but also how much is it that he's so dependent on using his nose, that he's able to self regulate so well.

Trainers talk all the time about structure and boundaries, but what does that mean?
When we go out, my dog's job is to pay attention to me, not every human or dog we come across.
I don't constantly fuss with her. I give her a bit of affection, praise, or treats when she makes good choices, especially around distractions. But it's quick like a handshake, which keeps it more impactful.
I'm her coach and her protector. In return I get a calm dog who trusts me in every situation.

Feeding the pups their breakfast from @jakeandbluesrawdog ! Blue the blind husky is especially excited as he sings the song of his people 🤣
I've had a lot of questions recently about crate training dogs and how to get them acclimated to it. When we pick up the food bowls, the dogs all run to their kennels. It's the most rewarding part of their day.
They're not free fed. They eat all of their food at once. When Blue and Daisy came into my life, they had been free fed before (meaning they grazed throughout the day). It took about a week of putting them on a schedule to change that.
So, food is exciting and has value. To access the food, they go to their crate. Once I feed them I let them rest and digest for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Also, I'm LOVING the pre made raw food from Jake and Blue's. They're local to central Texas and make a ton of good stuff. To behave well on the outside, our pups need to feel good on the inside. Plus, allergy season is upon us. I don't recall a time any of my dogs have had itchiness, hot spots, or other allergies. I attribute that to feeding quality species appropriate food.
