I had such an amazing time in NYC, but one of the highlights for me was getting to see the unique dog culture of the city. Central Park was like its own little world—dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds, and a mix of both on and off-leash, enjoying their weekend adventures with their humans. It was clear everyone was making the most of their time outdoors.
What really stood out to me was the dynamic. People kept moving, and if they paused to throw a ball or play with their dog, they were left to it—no awkward standing around like you see in so many suburban dog parks. It felt organic and engaging, with dogs and their owners sharing the space in a way that worked for everyone.
I imagine life in NYC can be challenging for dogs and their owners. Space is limited, and dogs need strong nerves to handle the constant stimuli of the city. But there’s also something beautiful about how much these dogs are out in the world every single day. It’s such a contrast to suburban life in places like Austin, where many dogs only know their home and backyard.
This was only from a brief observation on my part but it was really cool to see and left an impression. And of course, the canine fashion was adorable. So many stylish jackets, and I even spotted an Italian Greyhound rocking a bedazzled sweater 🤣😍

She is typically a very spazzy dog and doesn't take a moment to pause and process without help. Here, she is lovely and soft and offering eye contact and engagement and absorbing the information. I'm loving the transformation of her attitude over the time she's been with me.

First lesson with Baylor yesterday in our feisty Fido program! Baylor is a big fluffy boy, which gets him in to a bit of trouble. Big dogs in public can often get big amounts of attention.
As a live stock guardian breed, he does not love the attention he receives out in public.
As humans, we love to make eye contact and show our teeth when we smile at cute dogs. From a dog's perspective, that can be perceived as threatening and confrontational.
But Baylor's owners are fully committed to helping him feel more confident and comfortable as we teach him more appropriate behavior in public.
This is his first lesson where he's learning that the e-collar means to pay attention to his humans. Every time you hear the tapping or beeping is when he's pressing the button. As you can see, Baylor learning to be in a follow position *and* mindset.

She actually very much wants to talk to you 🤣 but when we're out training, her job is to keep her focus on her obedience and keep attention to me, not interact with everyone passing by. If I were to allow her to greet every stranger and new friend, she would also pull on the leash towards every person we pass, rather than focusing on me. Training is a lifestyle, and despite being an easy, social dog without behavior issues, I still hold her to the same training standard. Her state of mind is calm, happy, and we're able to go on adventures to anywhere. She can still say hi to the occasional stranger, as long as they ask permission first. 🙂
