Rumors can make you dislike innocent people. Don't judge people from what others are saying about them. Be wise, get to know them for yourself, then form your own opinion. The one talking to you may be the one you need to stay away from.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
She’s seen some better days,
She’s eating up my profits
And costs a lot for hay.

Another horse would suit me
A stronger one at that
She’s seen a lot of miles
Like my cowboy hat.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
She helped me herd my steer
I’m pretty sure she’s magic
I know I hold her dear.

Another horse would suit me
One that can run fast
Maybe one that’s younger
Or maybe one that lasts.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
She’s long and far in tooth
My children do remember
Her fondly from their youth.

Another horse would suit me
A gelding in its prime
One that needs less fixing
That helps me save a dime!

Why, they ask, then keep her?
Why not trade her now?
Bring her to an auction,
Replace her with a cow?

The Rancher’s brow grew heavy
He took a staggered step
His eyes did show his friendship
In wrinkles, as they crept.

His breath, he took in deeply
As he poised to say his words
It’s as if the earth grew silent,
That his message could be heard.

This old horse, the Rancher said
Has given me her life.
I would not trade for anything
Nor either would my wife.

Another horse would suit me,
And perhaps someday will come,
But this old gal, I love her,
She is the chosen one.

The old horse, the Rancher said
Her services she did lend
Her and I have seen the years
This old horse, she is my friend.

Another horse would suit me well
And younger days for me
And I will keep my promise,
Until our last breath sets us free.

Five ways to stay in the saddle when everything goes to hell:

1. Prioritize Prayer
If you wait to pray until the first jump, it’s too late. Learning to pray in the smooth times prepares our hearts for the hard times.

2. Stay Calm
Freaking out never fixed anything.

3. Quit Worrying
I have drastically improved my tendency to worry when I heard that worrying is a prayer about what you don’t want to happen.

4. Don’t Overthink It
Why did this happen? What did I do wrong? Why do they act like that? There’s a thousand ways to overthink every problem. The problem is that there’s never an answer to overthinking problems.

5. Take Responsibility
Take responsibility for every single aspect of your life. Not everything that happens to you will be your fault, but you must still take responsibility for how you handle it. Handle everything with grace, strength, boundaries, and courage. (A long yellow hot-shot might come in handy too, but you didn’t hear that from me.)

▪️▪️Grumpy By BL ▪️▪️

Grumpy lived to be 33 years old.

I bought Grumpy when he was a weanling through a cow sale in Portales, New Mexico. I gave $180.00 for him. He had appendix papers meaning he would be part thoroughbred. I put the first rides on him Dec-Jan 1991 when I got home from my first NFR. He was a coming 2 year old…actually I never even named him until I started riding him, he was a grumpy little cuss, would pin back his ears at you and never really wanted you touching him or messing with him.

Dad rode him on the ranch until he was 4 years old. He was really cowy and easy to get broke, really wanted to stop.

Grumpy had really crooked front feet, they turned out real bad, most folks didn’t think he would stay sound very long. Little did we know he would outlast us all. I started roping on him the end of his 4th year, I was gone so much back then going to rodeos so Dad really trained him. When I was home I would rope on him and Dad would fix anything I screwed up.

As long as I owned Grump Dad would be the only guy that shod him. He had been shoeing him since he was a c**t and he understood how to keep him shod with those crooked feet to keep him from interfering and bumping himself. I’m sure others shod him some but the only other guy I remember that could keep him right was my friend Termite, Lee Wyatt…he would always shoe him when I got to Cheyenne.

When he was 4 or 5 not sure, but I do remember the first place I’d enter on him. Wesley Simms roping Happy, Tx!! I placed on him all 4 rounds, winning 1st in a couple of them and winning the average. I won the high money trailer on him that year and that would be the first trailer I ever won. I came back next year on the same horse and repeated it.

Somewhere along the line when he was 6 or 7 I almost sold him. I never knew or appreciated how good he was until I watched Stran Smith ride him. I told Stran and Mart Becker I was going to sell him and they flew to Arizona to ride him. Stran ran 3-4 on him and Marty the same. When I saw Stran run that first one on him I knew I was the dumbest cowboy ever for pricing him. Long story short…they wanted him but needed a few days, to come up with the money and it got me off the hook.

I was lucky to have him and be a part of a great horses career. Couple highlights of our time together was that run at Pocatello, Idaho. I took the bridle off and roped my last short go calf on him-winning second in that round. I won $17,500 on him there that year. He won horse of the year in 2000 and that year I went to 38 rodeos, making the top ten in the world. That year at the finals we won or split first in 4 rounds….placing in 8 out of 10 rounds. We won the average and set a money earrings records at the NFR in the calf roping at that time. I have been sitting here trying to think and I ran about 70 calves more or less on him at The Thomas & Mack. I won just over 1/2 million on him in PRCA earnings and that was not easy at the time, the pay then was not what it is today.

I sold Grumpy to Blair and Barry Burk. I knew he would be cared for….for the rest of his life. Blair took him to the NFR a few more times. I quit roping early in my career, my daughter Sierra was so mad at me when I sold him..I think to this day she still is. I didn’t want to see him stand around and get old. Barry thanked me for selling him to them every time we saw each other, he loved Grump as much as I did.

We lost Barry last spring, that would be the last time I saw Grump, when I went to say goodbye to my old dear friend Barry who was family to me. Pretty fitting that two legends went to be with God so close to the same time. If it was me I would not want to stir up a match roping in heaven right now…Barry Burk would be unbeatable riding ole Grump.

Can't wait for this rain to be over so we can get back to riding horses. We can't do lessons, ride, lunge, or even turn them out it's so muddy.
