It’s always something 😂😂😂 But on a serious note, learn from my mistake.
Rats are curious and destructive pets. They love to chew, and this destructive habit serves a purpose as well. But not all things are safe for rats to gnaw on. Be very mindful when setting things down near the cage. A forgotten rag left on top after cleaning day can result in a vet visit (or worse). Cords and cables are something else to be mindful of. It doesn’t even need to touch the cage (as is evidenced by my poor playpen). If the rats can reach it with their little hands through the bars, they will pull it closer and have a field day.
So whether you’re new to rats or a seasoned vet, it’s never a bad time for a reminder to check around your cages for potential hazards. Thankfully, none of my rats were harmed during their little night of terror. I was very blessed, but it’s a risk I should have been more careful about.
