🐶Meet Bones, the Comeback Canine! 💪🏻
When sweet Bones arrived at Philadelphia Animal Specialty & Emergency (PASE), he was in serious trouble. He had accidentally ingested a rodenticide containing cholecalciferol (Vitamin D). This sneaky toxin disrupts the body's ability to regulate calcium—a crucial mineral crucial for every heartbeat, muscle movement, and more.😥
By the time his condition was discovered, Bones' calcium levels were dangerously high, causing damage to his kidneys and other vital organs. It was a race against time to save him.
Our dedicated team at PASE sprang into action, providing intensive treatments to bring his calcium levels under control. After days of critical care in the hospital, Bones wasn’t out of the woods yet. His fight continued with weeks of outpatient treatments, each step bringing him closer to stability and recovery. ❤️‍🩹
Thanks to his resilience and the care he received, Bones made a miraculous full recovery. Today, he's back to living his best life—wagging his tail, and spreading joy everywhere he goes.
Bones’ story is a reminder of the power of teamwork, expert care, and a little canine courage. Let’s give Bones a big virtual paw-five for being a true survivor! 👏🏻

🌟 Meet Danish, AKA Dani Donuts, NFD (No Fun Dog), and Tiny Toes. This sweet and loyal girl has captured so many hearts! 💖

Originally from North Carolina, Dani’s journey started after being found post-Hurricane Sandy and brought to a shelter in Pennsylvania. She's always been a low-key cuddle bug, enjoying naps and snuggles. 💤💕

Since 2015, Dani’s memorized every corner of the house and, despite losing her sight to SARDS in early 2024, she does just fine. She still enjoys her daily walks, and the neighborhood kids adore her. Her tail wags a mile a minute when she hears their voices! 🐾💫

Dani has been through a lot, including a recent blood transfusion for IMHA, but she’s bounced back strong and continues to spread joy everywhere she goes! 🌈 She even has a new part-time companion, Luna, to keep her company.

Her calm and loving nature is an inspiration, and we're so grateful to have her in our lives. Keep smiling, Dani! 🐶💖

PASE Educational: Temporary tracheostomy tubes 🤩

Temporary tracheostomy tubes are placed to bypass upper airway obstructions, allowing dogs to breathe effectively. Common reasons include laryngeal paralysis, severe swelling (e.g., due to trauma or allergic reactions), tumors, or foreign body obstructions. Indications arise in cases of acute respiratory distress caused by airway blockage that cannot be immediately resolved through other means. Patients are placed under anesthesia and the tube surgically placed.

Temporary tracheostomy tubes typically remain in place for several days to a few weeks, depending on the underlying cause of the airway obstruction and the dog’s recovery The tube is removed once the obstruction resolves and the dog can breathe normally through its natural airway. After removal, the tracheostomy site usually begins to close within 1–2 days and heals completely in 7–10 days in most cases.

Meet Calcifer, the shy yet fiery feline who has overcome not one but two incredible battles! 🔥🐱

His journey began with Dr. Johnson and the Internal Medicine team at PASE when he started feeling unwell. His condition was a mystery, evading diagnosis at every turn—until his doctors finally uncovered the culprits: Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) and Lymphoma.

Despite the daunting news, Calcifer refused to let his flame be extinguished. He tackled FIP head-on with weeks of dedicated treatment, and once that battle was won, he turned his focus to conquering cancer. Under the careful guidance of Dr. Davis and the Oncology team, Calcifer began chemotherapy. At first, he was nervous, but with each visit, his timid spark grew into a powerful flame.

Through it all, he found comfort in unexpected friendships—leaning on Opie and Dash, the Onco-support dogs, and forming a special bond with anesthesia technician Steph, who never missed a single appointment.

Now, this once-shy ember is burning brighter than ever because…

Meet Branson, the adventure-loving golden boy with a heart as big as the ocean! 🌊☀️

Whether it’s spontaneous road trips, long walks on the beach, or picnics in the sand, Branson knows how to live life to the fullest. But when his family discovered a bump on his throat, they knew something wasn’t right.

Wanting to keep his sunny spirit shining, they turned to the experts at PASE. His skilled surgeon, Dr. Samuel, removed the tumor with precision, leaving barely a scar (though Branson thought a tough-guy look wouldn’t have been the worst thing). With surgery behind him, he took on the next phase of his journey—chemotherapy.

At first, Branson was nervous (understandably so!), but with the support of Dr. Davis and the Oncology team—plus a little extra help from his “Gaba-zone” to calm his nerves—he quickly realized he was in the best hands. And with his sister Kristen there to hold his paw through every visit, he never felt alone.
Now, this salty sea dog is ready to ride the next wave of life—cancer-free!

🐾EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Meet Satana, Client Service Representative! 🙌😍

Satana plays an integral role in the PASE experience, serving as the first friendly face and welcoming voice that greets visitors and callers alike. Hailing from West Philadelphia, Satana grew up in a close-knit family that deeply valued time spent with one another. Her passion for animals ignited at just four years old, inspiring her aspiration to become a veterinarian. Even as a child, she would cleverly bring home stray cats to her grandmother’s house, ensuring they were nourished, cozy, and protected.

In her capacity as a Client Service Representative, Satana treasures the moments she gets to spend with all the patients who enter PASE. She delights in showering them with affection and laughter, fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere for both pets and their owners. Outside of her responsibilities at the clinic, Satana dedicates her time to caring for her mother and indulging her love for romance novels and binge-watching Netflix alongside her two beloved cats.

Meet Atlas, the charming Corgi with a big personality and an even bigger victory to celebrate! 🎉

Last September, his mom noticed some unusual lumps and bumps, along with some tummy troubles. After a visit to Dr. Davis at PASE, Atlas was diagnosed with lymphoma. With weekly chemotherapy treatments, his lymph nodes returned to normal, and he started feeling like himself again.👏🏻

While weekly vet visits weren’t always his favorite, Atlas pushed through with encouragement, his emotional support laser pointer, and his amazing PASE care team. Now, he’s happy to announce…

PASE PET STORY: Meet Arthur! 🥰

Arthur is a delightful and affectionate 9-year-old chihuahua mix who has captured the hearts of his adoptive family. After being rescued, he enthusiastically embraced his new life as a dedicated Eagles supporter, complete with a unique howl that he saves for game days. Arthur treasures cuddle time and has a remarkable knack for sensing when his mom wraps up her work, making the most of those moments to snuggle up.

Unfortunately, he recently endured an unexpected attack from a much larger dog. Following this frightening incident, Arthur was quickly taken to an emergency veterinary hospital and later referred to PASE for a thorough evaluation of a significant wound on his left side resulting from the encounter. The wound was healthy enough to close but was too large to close using standard surgical techniques. We applied Velcro pads to the skin and elastic straps to gradually stretch the surrounding skin in order to mobilize tissue for wound closure. The owner was able to gradually tighten the elastic straps over three days in preparation for surgery. This worked extremely well and Arthur's wound was successfully closed. Without the skin stretching procedure, it could have taken months for the wound to heal.

🐾EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Meet Manny Joselin, Surgery Technician! 🙌😍

Manny plays an essential role in the Surgery department at PASE! She diligently monitors pets during anesthesia and assists in managing their pain relief, all while radiating positivity with her cheerful demeanor.

Manny was born in the Brooklyn and raised in Philly. Growing up she wasn't able to have a pet, and was always interested in the neighborhood cats. Manny did some volunteering and worked at a pet store just to be around animals. It was during this period that she realized her passion for caring for animals. In 2015, Manny decided to volunteer at a veterinary general practice, which further sparked her enthusiasm. While in school to become a veterinary technician Manny worked as a veterinary assistant at a local specialty and emergency hospital. She successfully completed her education at Harcum in 2019 and proceeded to take the necessary national exam to become a Certified Veterinary Technician.

After finishing her studies, Manny continued her journey at the veterinary specialty and emergency hospital she worked at while in school. Manny quickly realized that she thrives on the unpredictability of each day, never knowing what new cases will come through the doors. Manny joined the PASE surgery team in 2023. Among all the procedures she performs, Manny has a particular fondness for soft tissue surgeries due to the unique nature of each case.

Outside of her professional life, Manny finds solace in spending quality time with her family and friends. She cherishes moments of relaxation by indulging in reading and savoring delicious food. At home, Manny is blessed with two beloved pets. First, there is Mack, a rescue dog from the Bahamas, who may have a nervous disposition but adores human company. The second is Casey, her calico cat. Unlike typical calicos, Casey stands out with her sweet, loving, and highly affectionate nature.

Setting the “PASE” in veterinary specialty care.

A privately-owned practice coming to the heart of Philadelphia in Summer 2021, PASE has been established with a singular goal in mind: to set the “pase” for both specialty and emergency care for your four-legged family member.
