Great Horned Owls are one of the most widespread owls in North America. They are highly adaptable to different climates and willing to be flexible in their choice of nest locations and prey items. One of these prey items is skunks. Most mammalian predators have a keen sense of smell and will avoid skunks, unless desperate, due to the risk of being sprayed.

Great Horned Owls have an abysmal sense of smell and don't mind the risk of getting sprayed. With their larger feet and powerful grip strength, Great Horned Owls can easily take down larger prey, like skunks, that other owl species would struggle with. Our hospital usually sees 10+ Great Horned Owl patients that have been skunked each year. You can imagine how bad that smells up the hospital, especially when one needs an incubator to help warm up.

Shown is Freya, one of our ambassador Great Horneds.

Happy Birthday, Philadelphia! 🥳🎉🎂

341 years ago, on October 27, 1682, Philadelphia was founded by William Penn, an English Quaker. Penn named the city Philadelphia, meaning “City of Brotherly Love” in Greek, to reflect his views toward religious tolerance.

Let’s talk double trouble (Giuseppe and Kimpet) - our two amazing friends (privately bred) intact male ferrets came in for deslorelin implants. We discussed the importance of dental care and yearly wellness needs. It was an amazingly enjoyable packed appointment.

When you’re asking Max to do “Big Wings” and he waits until no one is looking…

Max had presented for coelomic effusion (free fluid in the body cavity), respiratory difficulty, sinus disease, severe anemia, elevated white blood cell count, hyperostosis, elevated calcium (ionized and total) and a coelomic mass. After a surgical planning CT was performed, a coelomic exploratory surgery was performed. A large friable gonadal mass was found and resected. Max received a blood transfusion (generously donated by his housemate) during his procedure. He recovered uneventfully.

The mass came back as a testicular tumor.

MICROSCOPIC DIAGNOSIS: Testicular mixed germ cell s*x chord/stromal tumor.

COMMENT: Tumors of this nature are uncommon, best reported in humans, but are occasionally seen in dogs. I have a few birds on file with similar tumors. Due to the rarity of the tumor, it is difficult to predict the biological behavior. The tumor is well circumscribed in the examined sections and appears to have been completely excised. No vascular invasion is noted in the sections. Sertoli cell tumors can sometimes be associated with hormonal derangements.

Max is now back to his old self and doing well at home with his amazing family.

Well….Dr Tyson is at it again (I thought she would’ve retired early after the “Brady” debacle- yet she continues to help our friends at the BFF…and it was time for our little Ladke’s neuter…and while it’s my “luck” bc nothing can be easy (he was cryptorchid)- if there was ONE person for the job- that’s Susan! Thank you to Exotic Doc Tyson and -along with her all of her top notch nurses for getting the job done! All I can say now is “Here. We. Go…what’s next?!”
