Answer: No! Apoquel does not interfere with any type of allergy testing. Neither does Cytopoint or Atopica. To learn which medications do, talk to your veterinary dermatologist when you schedule your test.

Question: What age can my pet get allergy tested?

Answer: As long as your pet has been having symptoms for at least a year, they can be tested. Additionally, allergy shots or drops are no less effective when given to older animals, so it is never "too late" to test and treat!

Question: What is the best flea & tick preventative?

Answer: Well...

Fleas and ticks are present year round and spread life-threatening diseases (and gross ones, like tapeworms). Some dogs and cats are also very allergic to flea saliva, so even a single flea bite can trigger a major skin problem! The safest and most effective preventatives tend to be the oral ones - they are FDA-regulated and have gone through extensive safety testing. They also are the only ones that will kill fleas 100% of the time prior to them laying an egg in your house. That said, always discuss what is best for your pet with your veterinarian.

Question: Can you test my dog for food allergies?

Answer: TLDR - Tests for food allergy exist, but studies have shown that they are unreliable, inconsistent and cannot be relied upon for diagnosing food allergy, nor determining what foods should be avoided. Don't waste your money!

It's allergy testing season! Kitty-patient Frank came in for a skin prick test - he was positive to many pollens and mites! Now it's time to start allergy shots to desensitise him and reduce his itch!

Question: Can my dog be allergic to their food?

Answer: Yes! It's not as common as pollen or dust mite allergy, but we do see food allergy in dogs! Dogs can be allergic to both food and pollen (i.e. have both food and 'environmental' allergies). The symptoms of pollen and food allergy can be identical, making diagnosis challenging. This is when a veterinary dermatologist can be helpful!

Question: Why does my dog keep getting ear infections?

Question: What are some symptoms of allergies in cats?

Answer: Though often blamed on stress, overgrooming or having โ€œbald spotsโ€ is actually more commonly a sign of allergies in cats! Another very common sign is having a very itchy face or neck, which often results of scabs, scale or crusties on or around the face! If your cat has either of these issues, it may be time to talk to a dermatologist!

For this reason, the only way to truly rule OUT a food allergy is a strict elimination diet trial with a very special prescription diet. Your dog doesnโ€™t have to eat this special diet forever - just for about 8-10 weeks, but it should be done under the care of a veterinarian or dermatologist as it is important to make sure your dogโ€™s itch is managed and that they are free from infection! Your vet can also help you troubleshoot any issues that inevitably will come up, especially if your pup is picky! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™
