Street Tails Animal Rescue

Street Tails Animal Rescue Helping the homeless, the unwanted, and the special needs dogs of the Philadelphia area. Lindsay's mission was clear: to save one dog at a time.

Our Story
Street Tails Animal Rescue (STAR) began in 2001 as a humble one-woman effort led by Lindsay Condefer. From her pet store, The Chic Petique, Lindsay poured her heart and soul into rescuing dogs and finding them loving homes. In 2010, with the steadfast support of friends, supporters, and a dedicated board of directors, Lindsay's vision expanded. Street Tails Animal Rescue transitioned to

its own dedicated location, a testament to its commitment to making a difference in the lives of homeless and abandoned dogs in the Philadelphia area. Our Unique Approach
What sets Street Tails Animal Rescue apart is our distinctive approach, powered by just two full-time staff members. While many larger organizations boast extensive teams, our small but mighty team oversees every aspect of our rescue operation. From fundraising and social media outreach to the hands-on care of each and every dog that enters our doors, our dedicated staff ensures that every animal receives the attention, love, and support they need to thrive. Our Mission
At Street Tails Animal Rescue, our mission is unwavering: to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs in need. We are committed to pulling local animals out of shelters and providing them with the care and love they deserve. Each life we save reinforces our belief that every animal, regardless of their background, deserves the chance for a brighter future.

Our mission is made possible by the dedication of our two full-time staff members, our passionate volunteers, and the guidance of our committed board of directors. Together, we work tirelessly to ensure that every dog that comes through our doors receives the care, attention, and support they need to thrive. Our Impact
Since our inception, Street Tails Animal Rescue has made a significant impact in the lives of countless animals and families. With the support of our community, we have been able to exponentially increase the number of animals we rescue and rehome each year. Our success stories are a testament to the power of compassion and the difference that can be made when we come together to help those in need. As we look to the future, we remain committed to our mission of saving lives and making a difference in the lives of animals in our community. We invite you to join us in our efforts and become a part of our mission to ensure that every dog knows they are wanted and loved. www.streettails.org

In 2001, a single woman set out to change the world for dogs in need—one life at a time. That woman, our founder Lindsay, began this mission with nothing but a deep love for animals and a belief that every dog deserves a second chance. With the support of friends and supporters, Street Tails Animal Rescue opened the doors to our very own rescue center in 2010, giving us the ability to house up to 9 dogs at a time.

For over two decades, we’ve provided a safe haven for dogs who had nowhere else to go, dogs who were abandoned, mistreated, or overlooked. Here, they find not just shelter, but love, care, and hope for a better tomorrow. But the road hasn’t been easy, and this year has tested us more than ever before.

Adoptions have slowed to a heartbreaking pace, but our commitment to these dogs remains unwavering. We rely on a small, dedicated network of fosters who provide some of our dogs with temporary homes, and we cherish them. But the majority of our dogs live at our rescue, which means we’re responsible for every aspect of their care—day in and day out.

We don’t own our building. We pay rent every month while dreaming of a place that’s truly ours. We cover utility bills, food, staffing, and, most critically, medical care. Many of the dogs we take in need special attention—some require surgeries, others long-term treatments. We never say no, but the costs are overwhelming.

We’ve been saving lives for 23 years, and we want to continue for many more. But the harsh reality is, we can’t do it alone. We need your help.

Today, we’re asking for just 5️⃣ dollars. It might seem like a small amount, but to us, it’s a lifeline. Your $5 can keep our lights on, pay for a dog’s meal, or help cover the cost of vital medical care. Your $5 can help us keep this dream alive.

Please, don’t scroll past this. Our dogs need you. We need you. Let’s make sure that Street Tails can continue saving lives, one dog at a time.

Walter came to us from ACCT Philly, where he was found as a stray, nervous, and unsure. But since arriving at Street Tails, he’s starting to show us the true gentleman he is. Despite being in rough shape—malnourished, with matted fur and a nasty upper respiratory infection—Walter has been nothing but patient and sweet with our staff. He’s beginning to trust again, and we’re seeing glimpses of the wonderful dog he’s meant to be. 💛

Walter has a vet appointment tomorrow to make sure he’s on the right track with his antibiotics, but he needs a lot more than that to fully recover. He deserves all the love and care we can give.

To help Walter continue his journey to better health and happiness, we’re asking for your support. Every bit helps him get the fresh start he deserves.

Hold onto your magnifying glasses, folks—Professor Plum has arrived at Street Tails, and he’s here to solve the greatest mystery of all: finding his forever home! 🏡

This dapper detective was found wandering the streets, no clue where he came from or who let this gentleman go. But one thing’s for sure—he’s ready to crack the case of the missing family!

Professor Plum is on the lookout for a cozy home where he can retire from his adventures as a stray. He’s got a nose for treats, a love for belly rubs, and a heart as big as his bow tie (okay, maybe not quite that big, but close)! 💜

Think you can help him solve the puzzle? Submit an application for Professor Plum and see if you’re the missing piece in his story. 🧩
Ps:
With every new arrival like Professor Plum comes more vet bills—and we could always use a little extra support to ensure they get the care they need. If you’re able, please consider donating to help us continue saving lives. 🙏

We’re thrilled to share that Walker Texas Ranger recently met a wonderful family, and they absolutely adore him!

✨But as eager as we are to see him in a loving home, we can’t in good conscience move forward with his adoption until we know he’s fully healthy.

⭐️ Ranger had an important vet appointment today at Mount Laurel. While he can be scheduled for his neuter, the vets also need to perform an airway exam during the procedure. If the exam shows he needs surgery to correct his airway, they’ll do it at the same time. The combined cost of these procedures is estimated between $5,840 and $7,500.

As a reputable rescue, we owe it to Ranger—and to his future family—to ensure he receives the best possible care. We simply cannot adopt him out until he’s medically cleared. However, our funds are critically low after covering Ethel’s bill. Despite the generosity of our supporters, we didn’t raise enough to fully offset her costs, leaving us in a tough financial spot.

Now, we’re turning to you, our incredible community, for support. We’re committed to saving dogs like Ranger, even when it means facing financial hardship. But we can’t do it alone. If we don’t raise the funds needed for Ranger’s surgery, we’re not sure how we’ll move forward.

Every donation, big or small, brings us one step closer to getting Ranger healthy and into the loving home he deserves. Please consider donating today—your generosity can make all the difference.

Rescue work is a mix of beauty and heartbreak, and Ethel’s story is one we won’t soon forget. A week ago, we met Ethel—a terrified dog who was sitting in a tiny box at ACCT Philly. From the moment we saw her, we knew we wanted to help.

Ethel came to us as a shadow of the dog she was meant to be, but after a few short days, she began to trust. She walked on a leash, trotted over when called, and gently pressed her head into our laps, seeking the love she’d been missing for so long.

Sadly, on Friday, Ethel’s health took a sharp turn. What we thought was a respiratory infection turned out to be aspiration pneumonia. Despite our best efforts, Ethel’s condition rapidly declined, and we had to make the hardest decision—to let her go. But Ethel didn’t leave this world alone. She was surrounded by our team, showered with love, and in those final moments, we hope she could feel that she was cherished.

Ethel touched our hearts deeply, showing us the incredible resilience and love that dogs still have to give, even after all they’ve been through. As we mourn her loss, we honor her memory and pledge to continue our mission for the next dog in need.

To learn more about how you can be a crucial part of our mission, please visit our website. Your donation will help cover Ethel’s care and support our ongoing efforts, to give Philadelphia’s true underdogs the second chance they all deserve.

We wish we had better news, but Ethel’s condition remains critical. The only positive change is that her fever finally broke, but she’s still struggling. She’s now on oxygen, and they’re continuing IV fluids and antibiotics to give her the best fighting chance. Sadly, Ethel won’t be coming home today.

Ethel’s life was just beginning—it can’t end like this. She needs your love, your thoughts, and your support now more than ever. We can’t save her without you. Please, if you’re able, donate to Ethel’s care fund. Let’s make sure her story doesn’t end here. 💕

Adoptions are slower than ever, even for the most sought-after breeds. 😔

Juicy Fruit is proof of how tough things have gotten. Despite being small, fluffy, non-shedding, and simply adorable, this sweet girl has had FIVE applicants pass on her.

Juicy Fruit is mastering her cues, doing great with house training, and knows how to quietly chill in her kennel. She might get a bit vocal when she sees her doggy pals, but she’s eager to make friends and just needs the right family to guide her.

Looking for a pup who’s the perfect mix of playful energy and snuggle-worthy sweetness? Ube is here to steal your heart! 💕

This bright and bouncy pocket pittie LOVES people. Whether she’s following you around the house or having a blast with her favorite toys, Ube knows how to keep things fun. She’s a fetch superstar, already mastering tricks like sit, lay down, and leave it. And when it’s time to chill, Ube’s all about cozying up on the couch—right in your lap. 🛋️

She’s a total pro on walks and loves playing with her foster brother, even sharing her toys like a champ. And when it’s time for a break, Ube happily settles into her crate or pen. She’s the ultimate combo of youthful energy and laidback vibes.

Ube thrives with slow introductions to new doggy friends. She’s not into meeting other pups on walks or dealing with the chaos of dog parks—and that’s totally okay! She shines in more intimate settings where she can take her time to warm up.

Meet Ethel, our newest arrival from ACCT Philly. We committed to rescuing Ethel and another small dog before we had to close intake temporarily. Her intake photo—a scared, shaved-down dog curled up in a cardboard box—touched our hearts deeply.

When we met her at ACCT, Ethel was barely moving, shaking with fear. We knew immediately that she deserved a chance at a better life. Today, Ethel is off to our vet for a check-up. She’s dealing with a URI and a few minor health concerns.

We know we’ve been asking for a lot of support recently, but it truly takes a village. We couldn’t continue our mission without each and every one of you. Thank you for standing by us and helping Ethel get the chance she so desperately needs.

It’s no secret—our organization is by no means large. Day in and day out, our rescue kennels are run by two full-time staff members managing everything from hands-on care to adoption coordination, fundraising, and more. Our dedicated volunteers are a vital part of our team, helping to make saving these dogs possible. Right now, however, we are in urgent need of adoption support.

**At this time, we must close intake due to our critical shortage of space and support. With Myra recently returned from adoption over the weekend and Juicy Fruit being scheduled to return, we are facing an urgent situation.**

* Rolo is also being scheduled to return and we are desperately seeking a foster home for him. Rolo is a very sweet, medium size dog who suffers from extreme separation anxiety. We’re trying to avoid putting him in a kennel environment due to his tendency to self-harm in such settings. He needs a foster who is home frequently and can support him through his behavioral consult.

Our rescue operates with only nine kennels, and we’re already stretched thin with our current fosters. We cannot continue to intake dogs and care for them ethically and responsibly while wonderful dogs like Queenie, Busy Philipps, Bear Claw, Culpeo, Ube, and others still wait for homes. Our limited foster support is wearing thin, and if a foster needs a break or support for a challenging match, we need space to safely house them while we work on their needs.

If you’ve been approved for adoption recently please email [email protected] or can offer a foster home, please reach out at [email protected] — Your support is crucial for us to continue providing care and finding homes for all our dogs.

If you cannot offer adoption or foster support, please help by sharing this message with your network. Additionally, any donation, no matter the size, helps us continue to support Philadelphia’s true underdogs and provide the care they need.

08/11/2024

Ever wonder why so many good dogs are still sitting in shelters and rescues?

It’s not because there’s anything “wrong” with them. The truth is, there just aren’t enough homes for all the dogs in need, especially now when adoptions are slower and even the most sought-after breeds, (picture “small, fluffy, preferably non-shed,”) are being returned or passed by at higher rates.

Take Queenie, for example. Next month will mark two years since we saved her from euthanasia after she was dumped at a local hospital with treatable injuries. She’s been with us ever since, waiting patiently for her forever home. Queenie’s only request? To be the only resident pet. Surely, someone can provide that to this special, loving girl.

The reality is, we humans have such high expectations for our canine companions. We want them to fit perfectly into our world—always well-behaved, calm, and understanding of our needs. But imagine if the tables were turned. What if you were plucked from everything you knew, expected to adapt to a new environment overnight, and to understand a whole new set of rules and routines without anyone explaining them to you? It would be overwhelming, right?

Our dogs, like Queenie, are trying their best to live in our world. But they have their own thoughts, feelings, and instincts. They need time, patience, and understanding to adjust. They need forgiveness for those moments when they don’t quite get it right the first time.

Adopting a dog isn’t just about finding the perfect pet; it’s about opening your heart to an animal who needs you. It’s about seeing the world from their perspective, being patient with their learning curve, and to be forgiving in the moments of mischief or mistakes.

Let’s be more forgiving. Let’s be more understanding. Because every dog, especially Queenie, deserves a chance to be loved and to find their forever home.

This laid-back lawman has lived with the same family his whole life before being surrendered to ACCT Philly due to his owner’s health concerns. He’s used to sharing his ranch with kids and is a true low-energy couch potato, perfect for snuggling up on those lazy afternoons.

Walker Texas Ranger will be seeing our vet next week and has a grooming appointment scheduled for this Friday. Some of his folds look a bit irritated, and he has a concern with his left eye. But don’t worry, partner, we’re on a mission to get him happy and healthy!

No need to worry about accidents with this distinguished gentleman - Pip is proudly housetrained and has impeccable manners. Plus, he’s crate trained, making him the perfect houseguest who respects your space as much as he adores your company. But don’t let his refined ways fool you; he’s still a puppy at heart when it comes to affection.

Speaking of affection, Pip has never met a lap he didn’t like. He’s a certified expert in the fine art of cuddling, always ready to transform your legs into his personal throne. And forget about feeling lonely - this devoted pooch will be your faithful shadow, following you from room to room like an adorable, furry duckling.

So, if you’re looking for a constant companion who’ll fill your days with love, laughter, and lap-warming, Pip Squeak is your man... er, dog!

Adopt him today and discover the joy of having your very own canine cuddle connoisseur!
