We get asked all the time, “how do I get my cat in the carrier?”

1. Leave your carrier out for a few days prior to the appointment.
2. Make it a happy place - treats help
3. Build up to longer trips. Five minutes at a time in a closed carrier doesn’t seem so bad.

Happy International Rescue Cat Day! If you’re looking to add a new member to your family, it is always wonderful to consider adopting a rescue cat. There are many kitties in shelters who need homes, who may have been there for a while. Even if adopting a cat isn’t in the cards for you right now, it can always be nice to take a short visit to a shelter to visit the kitties there!

Happy March 1st! It’s getting closer and closer to spring time; warmer weather and blooming flowers. If your kitty likes to go outside in warmer months, make sure you keep them up to date on flea and tick prevention! This can help keep them protected from allergic reactions to flea bites and the many diseases ticks carry. It doesn’t hurt to do even if they’re indoor only!

💩 Importance of having a F***l Check on your cat annually 💩

Below is a picture of the most common intestinal parasites seen in a Feline f***l sample. There are all different ways that a cat can become infected with these parasites. For instance, the tapeworm infects by a cat eating a flea. The flea could be on a mouse they caught, another cat/dog they groom, or even themselves. Flea and Tick prevention can help prevent an infestation and might be recommended if tapeworms are seen.
Cats or kittens that ingest dirt containing roundworm larvae, will then become infected with adult roundworms. They can do this by digging outside in the dirt and licking their paws, or even grooming other animals that are infected. Incidentally, a cat grooming its feet can become infected with hookworms.
Cats become infected with whipworm by ingesting animals carrying the parasite, such as birds or mice.
These are the most common parasites, and the reason we want to test the f***s annually. They are very easy to treat once found, but if left unchecked, can cause major health issues with your cat.

We get asked all the time …. “What is the best way to trim my cats nails?”

“Take a paw in your hand and use your thumb and pointer finger to gently press down on the top and bottom of the paw on the joint just behind the claw. This will cause the claw to extend so you can quickly but carefully snip off the sharp tip and no more.”

It’s easier to start when they are kittens. 🙂

✨A Blocked cat is an emergency!✨

A “blocked” cat refers to a cat that cannot pass urine due to an obstruction. Male cats have the highest risk for developing a urinary obstruction. Female cats however, it is much less likely to occur in.
When a cat is "blocked," he will usually posture to urinate, but nothing, or just the tiniest dribble will come out. This can also be confused with constipation as the posturing is the same. As the condition progresses, he becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Eventually the pain is excruciating, and the bladder may even rupture due to the buildup of pressure. Also, the chemicals that should be exiting his body through urination, quickly begin to accumulate in the blood stream, wreaking havoc on the body. Without rapid intervention, death will follow from this self-poisoning can occur within a day or 2.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a shared conditions that both cats and humans can develop. This condition occurs when a cat's heart fails to pump as effectively as it should, resulting in the buildup of fluid in places where fluid should not be. This misplaced congested fluid leads to a patient declining quickly, often struggling to breathe.
The most common symptom of CHF in cats is difficulty breathing due to accumulation of fluid in their chest. As fluid collects in the chest, the lungs are unable to inflate properly. In turn, this causes cats to develop rapid, shallow, and distressed breathing. Cats with heart disease also have significantly higher risks for developing blood clots in their legs. This may manifest as acute, severe pain or loss of normal limb function.
Other signs may include:
* Coughing
* Lethargy
* Weight loss
* Abdominal bloating (due to fluid accumulation)
* Loss of appetite
* Vomiting
* Loss of consciousness
If your cat has fluid built up in their chest or belly, your veterinarian may perform an emergency procedure called a thoracocentesis or abdominocentesis (chest or belly tap) where they use a needle and syringe to remove this excess fluid. Removing this fluid can help keep your pet comfortable while they perform additional diagnostics to determine the cause of the heart failure and may even save your cat's life. Your veterinarian may prescribe one or several medications that work together to prevent future episodes of CHF. Medications used to treat the congestive signs of heart failure in cats are oftentimes the same medicines used for humans suffering from congestive heart failure.

It’s not often we see our kitties drink, so it can sometimes slip our minds the importance of ensuring our kitties get the hydration they need. Some ways to help promote hydration for your cats include getting a kitty water fountain, adding some water to your cat’s food, or introducing a primarily wet food based diet.

With Valentine’s Day just passing and some of us out there having gotten flowers, it wouldn’t hurt to brush up on what flowers and plants are safe to have around our furry friends. There are a scary number of plants out there that can cause harm to our beloved kitties, so it would be a great idea to make sure any in your home are safe and ensure any that might not be are put away out of reach.

This kitty has a pretty rare coat color known as Lilac. It’s easily recognizable by the almost purple hue to the cream fur. The lilac coat color is certainly one of my favorites! Does anyone else have a favorite coat color?
