Our pets want to know your holiday plans! If you’re staying in town and would like to host an adorable four-legged guest, PAWS is seeking short- and long-term fosters now through the New Year. You can help by:

🐾 Pet sitting (usually for 3-7 days) for other PAWS foster parents who are traveling. This is a great option if you’ll be home for some holidays but not others, or can only make a short-term commitment!

🐾 OR, committing to fostering a pet until they find their forever home (a few weeks to a few months) if you won't need a sitter during the holidays!

All types of pets are looking for foster homes, including cats and dogs with medical or behavioral needs, animals needing a break from the shelter due to stress, kittens and nursing mothers, and pets waiting to be reunited with their owners through PAWS’ Safety Net Program. There’s a foster to fit almost any household, so reach out today and our team will help you make a match! Email [email protected], or sign up today at phillypaws.org/foster.

Have you ever wanted your very own energizer bunny? Meet Philly Phil! This playful 2-3 year old is a perpetual puppy who’s the life of the party wherever he goes. He absolutely loves people, and lets you know it with lots of enthusiastic tail wags and snuggles!

Phil’s manners are also very puppyish, so he’ll make great strides with an active adopter who can provide, structure, exercise, and ideally a big yard to goof off in (though he’ll be just as thrilled to trot around the neighborhood with you). The great news is that Phil loves to work for treats and is super eager to please. Once he’s burned off his energy, he’s happy to snuggle up with you for a well-earned nap!

Phil’s boundless energy and curiosity make for lots of fun and non-stop laughs, and while it takes some fine-tuning to keep those puppy behaviors from causing mischief, he is the sweetest, most loving dog who will reward you with endless affection.

Phil is ready to find love with an adopter, but would also be thrilled to find a foster home in the meantime. Email [email protected] to learn more, or check out Phil’s adoption bio here: https://phillypaws.org/adopt/animals-for-adoption/?20989017.

Kicking off by spotlighting two members of PAWS' wonderful foster family! Chrissy and Sean (and their dog Crumb) have been dedicated PAWS fosters since 2019.

They decided to start fostering after saying goodbye to their beloved senior dog, Nimbus, who they adopted from PAWS. Since then, they've fostered an astounding 17 dogs over the years, mostly seniors, giving each one comfort, companionship, and a chance at a better life.

For Chrissy, the best part of fostering is watching each dog’s transformation: "I love when the dogs become more comfortable and start to come out of their shell. That’s when we get to see their sweet and silly personalities shine!"

Chrissy and Sean especially love fostering seniors, who are often overlooked in the shelter. "They’re calmer than younger dogs, which matches our lifestyle, and they’re always ready for a good snuggle," she shares. "Foster pets amaze me with their resilience and ability to trust and love after being down on their luck."

Chrissy and Sean remind us that fostering doesn’t just change a pet’s life — it transforms yours: “We hope our experience shows that fostering is easier to fit into your life than you might think, and it brings priceless rewards. You get to share love and care with pets who return it unconditionally. The PAWS staff is also incredibly supportive, working hard to match each pet with a foster home that fits their lifestyle.”

Thank you, Chrissy and Sean, for helping PAWS pets find their way! If you’d like to join PAWS’ amazing foster community, learn more and sign up today at phillypaws.org/foster.

Heph and Dr. Tom want you to know that November is Diabetes Awareness Month! These sweet senior gentlemen keep getting passed over by adopters just because they’re diabetic, but they have SO much love to give and are hoping their big breaks will come soon🤞

Diabetes is easier to manage than you might think, and all these friendly seniors need to thrive is a regulated schedule for their meals and insulin, and a little extra monitoring through vet checkups. In return, you’ll have gained an adorable best friend who will reward you with love and affection for the rest of their days. Plus, their adopters will go home with a 3 month supply of their medication and special food!

🐾 11 year old Heph, aka Hephaestus, is a gentle soul who thrives on cozy couch cuddles. He communicates through endearing chirps, and is a connoisseur of scritches and head rubs, often gently nudging your leg or arm to request his favorite form of affection!

🐾 Tom is an adorable 11 year old who is an excellent birdwatcher and a very devoted companion. He’s been a total sweetheart in his foster home, and even enjoys rocking his snazzy bow-tie! Tom is looking for an adopter who is as loving as he is ❤️

Email [email protected] to learn more about Heph and Tom, or find them at phillypaws.org/adopt!

It doesn't take an expert to see that Maxine is one scared kitty. Can you help her feel safe again? This very shy kitten spends her days hiding in the back of her cage, and is suffering from a painful eye condition on top of it. She'll be getting surgery soon so she can live more comfortably, but is likely to withdraw even more during her recovery. Maxine is at a crucial stage of her socialization, and needs to find a foster home as soon as possible or risk missing the window where she can learn to trust humans. If you'd like to help, please email [email protected] to learn more!

136 families were served at Saturday’s community pet pantry! Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, including our partners at Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia, for hosting, our incredible volunteers, and every supporter who donated much-needed supplies!

We’re already starting to plan our next pantry, so if you’d like to help our community’s pets stay fed in the coming weeks, please consider sending supplies via phillypaws.org/chewy or phillypaws.org/amazon!

Poor Buddy Biscuits is feeling really crummy 🥺 Can you foster this sweet senior to help him get well again? He was fending for himself outside and was in very poor condition when he was rescued, suffering from a severe upper respiratory infection as well as painful dental disease that will require surgery with our medical team once he’s well enough. Buddy’s appetite is suffering due to his severe congestion and mouth pain, and he’ll have a much easier time recovering with some rest and TLC in a cozy foster home. He’s a very gentle and loving soul, and always some chirrups and head nuzzles to share in spite of how poorly he’s feeling (you can hear one of his tiny sounds in the second clip)! If you’d like to help Buddy get well again, please email [email protected] to learn more!

Move Over, Mondays - Garfield’s here to brighten your whole week! This feline character lives up to his famous namesake in all the best ways.

His daily agenda is packed with important cat business: playing supervisor to his humans, following them around to ensure household operations run smoothly, and keeping a watchful eye on the neighborhood from his favorite window perches. At night, he transforms into the ultimate snuggle buddy, showcasing his world-class purring and biscuit-making skills.

Garfield will be a great addition to a mellow home with adults or older kids. While he enjoys his role as the household’s feline-in-charge, he could potentially share his kingdom with other pets with proper intros — in fact, he’s currently loving life with a new kitten friend!

Are you ready to add a dash of feline wit and warmth to your life? Adopt Garfield today, and every day will feel like a satisfying lasagna dinner! Email [email protected] to learn more, or check out his adoption profile here: https://phillypaws.org/adopt/animals-for-adoption/?20460930.

We post a lot about the pressing need for Safety Net fosters, so today we’d like to share a little more about what PAWS’ Safety Net Foster Program is all about!

Many pets arriving at shelters have owners who love them and desperately want to keep them, but have run out of options due to a temporary crisis or transition (housing, medical, etc). When a few weeks or months are all that stand in the way of keeping a cherished pet, PAWS’ Safety Net Foster Program offers an alternative to permanently surrendering them to the shelter.

We take them in, match them with a temporary foster home, and reunite them with their owners as soon as they’re stable again! This program is 100% dependent on foster parents who are able to welcome a Safety Net pet, but the need in the community continues to outpace the number of foster homes available to take in a pet in transition. That’s why we need animal lovers like you to help keep more families together!

Here’s how it works: when you sign up, a member of our team will reach out to learn more about your household so we can make a good match based on your schedule, how long you can foster, and whether you have pets or kiddos at home. Once we’ve matched you with a pet, you’ll take them home and care for them until their owner is ready to be reunited with them. You’ll drop them back at the shelter on their reunion date, and our team will take it from there!

Safety net fostering usually lasts between 2-4 months, and PAWS will cover any needed medical care and exams for your foster pet while you have them. If supplies or pet food are a barrier to fostering, we can provide those as well!

We’d love to tell you more about this incredible program, so email [email protected] to get in touch with our team, or sign up today at phillypaws.org/foster!

Buzzy is ready to find love – maybe a little *too* ready, if you know what we mean 🫣 Since arriving at PAWS, this little guy has been showing his excitement in ways that may make you (and your furniture) blush. Yes, we're talking about hu***ng, and yes, it's okay to laugh.

Luckily, Buzzy was just neutered, which will hopefully help him cool his jets a little. When he's not in what his foster mom refers to as a "hormonally-driven fugue state," he's a playful, hilarious, affectionate ham who she calls "a sweet little donut with big puppy energy." He'll run and play for hours if you let him, then pass out on the couch by your side when he's done. Plus, it's scientifically impossible to stay grumpy when he looks at you with that underbite!

While we hope Buzzy's "special behavior" will decrease significantly now that he's neutered, it may require some further support if it's stemming from misplaced excitement or anxiety.

He's looking for an adopter with a great sense of humor, some space in their day to help him burn off that puppy energy, and a bit of patience to work with him as he settles into his home and learns to channel his feelings more appropriately.

If you don't take yourself too seriously and have a special place in your heart for adorable weirdos, 2 year old Buzzy is ready to bring you unconditional love, endless laughs, and a *very* unique definition of personal space. Live from PAWS' ringworm ward with some of the sweetest kittens around! These little ones have been under treatment at the shelter for several weeks now, and they're desperate for companionship and affection. They loved having us visit them for some playtime and snuggles, but what they want more than anything is to finally leave the shelter and finish their treatment in a home with a foster or adopter like you!

PAWS provides everything you need during their treatment, and in exchange for a few weeks of extra TLC, you’ll be getting a lifetime of love ❤️

To foster or adopt one or more of our adorable fungal friends, email [email protected] with the subject “ringworm kittens”!
Some ringworm fast facts:

🔹 It’s not a worm — it’s a fungal infection of the skin that usually shows up as small patches of hair loss in pets.

🔹 It’s a mild infection, but contagious to people and pets, so a separate room for fosters is the best way to prevent it from spreading during treatment.

🔹 It usually takes 4-8 weeks to clear up.

🔹 We have twice weekly “dip days” at our Grays Ferry clinics for ringworm fosters/adopters to drop their kitties off for medicated baths — no need to do it at home!

Are you ready to draft a new MVP (Most Valuable Pup) into your life? Meet Sports! This pint-sized, loyal lapdog is ready to steal your heart and fill your home with tail wags and love. While he's no athlete on the track, he's a total pro when it comes to cuddles, walks, and working his way into your heart (no overtime required)!

Sports’ ideal day is all about quality time with his human(s)—he loves curling up on the couch for a snuggle session, followed by a few walks, and then setting a new world record for finishing his dinner from a slow feeder. He would thrive in a quieter home with adults or older kids since he can have some handling sensitivities around his face, but he really is an affection enthusiast.

Sports is around 9 years old, and also gets along well with other dogs, having already shown himself to be a great teammate in foster care with his foster sister (cats are an unknown, but they're not off the table)!

Want to make Sports your #1 draft pick? Email [email protected], or learn more about adopting this cutie here: https://phillypaws.org/adopt/animals-for-adoption/?21002216.
