Novick Urban Farm (NUF) was founded in 2012 as a passion project of one of the Novick brothers on the property of the Novick Corporation.

With a focus on community outreach through our low cost farm market, we are dedicated to supporting and preserving food traditions that reflect the multi-cultural landscape of our neighborhood. The farm’s educational programs provide both children’s groups and people of all ages with hands-on experiences focused on sustainability, biodiversity, and nutrition. Headquartered in Philadelphia’s historic food district with offices in Baltimore, Novick Corporation provides food, essentials, and support services for childcare, education, adult care, healthcare, treatment facilities, and hunger-relief organizations. What began as an outdoor space with six raised bed demonstration boxes for childcare centers to bring children to get hands-on learning about food production is now a full-scale urban farm on 1.5 acres committed to offering *educational programming* and *community-centered farming and accessible food distribution* in the heart of South Philadelphia.

Today is world soil day 🌎 Soil provides a host of crucial services for both people and the planet. It puts food on our plates, purifies our water, protects us against flooding and combats drought. There is no food security without healthy soils

There are several types of irrigation you can use on a small scale farm like ours- we have drip irrigation, which we install every season using these foldable pipes here. 💧

Drip (or trickle) irrigation allows water to slowly drip right into the roots above the soil(in our case) and
minimizes evaporation, essentially using less water.

This type of irrigation can also be used beneath the soil with water dripping from underneath the soil. 💦🪴

Brrr, it’s getting freezing out there! 🥶What do we do with our lovely chickens when it gets real cold in the winter you might wonder? Luckily we built a spacious chicken coop where they have their own (not too hot) chicken heater.

We use straw to insulate their laying boxes and a deicing heater to keep their water from freezing. Last year our chickens continued to lay through the winter despite us not using lights to extend their days, we'll have to see what happens this year but you can at least count on them being nice and cozy!🐣🐔☀️

Did you know fall is a great time to add compost to your soil? Applying a layer in Autumn will especially give perennials a healthy boost for the coming spring and encorporate the material into the soil for the following season!
Speaking of compost- our partner is picking up pumpkins to compost so they don’t end up in a landfill and instead become rich soil again 🕺 Checkout their post for more info!

Happy Halloween!!🎃 here’s more hot sauce made from our peppers 😻 Repost from 🌶
We have a gorgeous fresh batch of Orange Habanero Hot Sauce out now, with the most beautiful peppers from and . This sauce is so bright in person, it practically glows. The heat on this is a little more substantial, but still with plenty of the citrus notes you know and love. Catch some at an upcoming market, or keep an eye out for more Orange Habanero dropping for the holidays next month. (More on this soon! 🧡)

October is National Farm to School month! One of our biggest values is bringing education here on the farm. From school groups to volunteer groups we welcome all ages and truly enjoy and appreciate opportunities to teach and collaborate with those in our community! 👩‍👧📚🐓

Did you know today is World Food Day? Last week we had the opportunity to check out Heavy Metal Sausage Co. and watch them start the process of turning our habeneros into hot sauce! 🌶🥵We love their mission of sourcing everything they possibly can locally, even down to the salt! Attention!! Due to crops being a lot less productive than we’d like we have made the decision for this week to be our last of the season at market. This will be the last time we will be accepting fmnp checks as well.

Besides our last market today, there will also be another event happening in the park we're excited to tell you about. As part of the Reading Promise Festival, Right to Read will be happening 3:30-5:30 today! There will be games, stories, art, and lots of books. All are welcome!!

Happy Monday! 🌱🍂 We had such a great time at last Thursday's volunteer event with South Philly Food Co-op We planted garlic, fixed up some storm damage, and made fresh pressed apple cider!

Happy October! 🎃🧡 We have some pumpkins (ta-kang-kob) that self-rooted as their own little pumpkin patch this year! These are lovely, but they aren’t the only ones you’ll see on our farm. Types of squashes, gourd & pumpkin we grow that have cultural significance include:

Happy Fall! 🍁🍃We've been preparing & spending time harvesting seeds as the seasons change. These here are 'Lavender Frog Egg' Eggplant. As you can see they are a yellowy/orange when harvested for seed collection, a stark difference from the light lavender color when they are to be eaten!

Last week we had Power Corps out on the farm! We had a great time getting ready for fall crops planting, thinning radishes, weeding, and composting some overgrown greenery with their help. We're grateful for large groups coming out like this that help us with these important projects!

We wouldn't be able to do what we do without volunteers! 🙏🏼 Thank you to Cigna's Summer Intern Team for coming out to help clear out beds so our Fall crops could be planted. We'd also like to make a shout out to volunteers Mitsu and Mayumi for helping us to plant our Fall crops:

Fun fact: these eggplants are ready to collect seed when they are red and ripe but are actually eaten before ripening when they are still green. Collecting the red pumpkin eggplant seeds is definitely reminding us of what’s around the corner 🍂

Our Story

Novick Urban Farm is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, educational farm program that is dedicated to promoting healthy choices, nutrition, sustainability and community engagement. By providing hands on learning opportunities to local Childcare programs, we are able to educate children at their youngest on healthy eating and nutrition, promoting long term healthy choices. We are also focused on building community relationships, not only through the organic produce we donate, but through the outreach programs we partner in.
