Some of my earliest memories as a child were spending countless hours watching my father’s vast collection of reptiles from the other side of the aquarium glass. He had amassed quite a collection, which included Savannah monitors, Colombian Tegus, Solomon Island Monkey Tailed Skinks, a monstrous green iguana, several Uromastyx, and of course an Indonesian imported Blue Tongue Skink. I have been fascinated by reptiles since before I can remember. I received my first lizard in 1994 as a child, a beautifully colored Irian Jaya Blue Tongue Skink. I had him for about a year until all of the reptiles in our home were rehomed sometime in the mid 90’s. In the summer of 2001 at 14 years old, I got the itch again to buy another Blue Tongue. I mowed lawns all summer and saved up a few hundred dollars. I spent hours reading every book I could get my hands on about reptiles and finally the day came in September when we attended my first reptile show. I came home that day with an $85 captive born and bred 3 year old “Northern” Blue Tongue Skink. I put “Northern” in parenthesis because I also learned that day that many vendors, even at reptile shows, will pass off imported animals as captive bred. That day I was sold an imported Irian Jaya Blue Tongue Skink from Indonesia, which I am proud to say is still thriving to this day in my care.
In recent years, I have acquired a small group of 6 Merauke Blue Tongue Skinks. It has always been said that the Northern Blue Tongues from Australia make the best pet skinks, but I strongly believe that the Meraukes with their impressive sizes and stunning coloration can be every bit as tame and as great of a pet as the Northerns. Unfortunately there are very few people dedicated enough that are working with this animal and the market is currently flooded with cheap wild caught skinks, many not suitable for a life in captivity. My mission is to produce only captive born and bred healthy animals, not only to provide buyers with a more suitable pet, but to lessen the demand for imported Indonesian skinks and maybe inspire others to do the same in the future.
