Hay Burners Equine LLC

Hay Burners Equine LLC Manufacturer of Slow Feed Hay Nets. Designed and built in our East Tennessee workshop. We only use heavy knotless netting in our products.

Home of the ORIGINAL Tub Toppers Our slow feed hay nets are designed by us and crafted in our small workshop in East Tennessee

How do our nets compare with the cheap mass produced hay nets? Our nets are designed to last. Top quality materials are carefully chosen to withstand the abuse that our equine partners dish out. Trial & error using my own horses as subjects has shown us which materials work best. All nets have paracord pull ties and come with some repair twine.

Recent change announcement:

Concerning custom nets
Some of you may have noticed on our front web page we are no longer offering custom bags; only flat sheets of our current mesh sizes will be custom cut upon request.

We are sorry to announce this change, its been contemplated for quite a while now. We just no longer have the resources to spend on special bag size requests or complicated designs requests for the hundreds of feeders out there. Our objective is to focus our limited time and energy in providing new slow feed hay net solutions.

We have a large offering of stock bag sizes readily available that fulfill most needs for bags, we have a variety of Tub Toppers available, and we also now have our most recent addition of nets for the plastic hay houses like the “Hay Hut” and “Hay Bonnet” these nets have a quick-change system for swapping net sizes easily, it also allows opening the net without flipping the house over. You can check them out here: Hay House Nets. This product will also work with many of the homemade wood feeders (you just supply your own wood screws for the clips).

We thank all our customers who trusted Hay Burners Equine to supply custom bags and hope you will still look to us for your other slow feed solution needs.

Lots of new ones added

Hay net remnants are not hay bags, they are just flat sheets of slow feed hay net material for your own horse hay feeder project. Most remnants will have raw cut edges and they may have manufacturer seams in them or other minor flaws

Unscrupulous sellers - beware of buying hay nets on Amazon, I have several photos that foreign companies have stolen from my site to advertise their inferior products, Amazon will do NOTHING about it either. My photo has the other hay roll and trailer in it, the stolen photo shown in a Amazon ad is the exact same round bale with a modified background (they are also selling a knotted net using my photo). There are others. Buyers beware! Hay Burners quit selling on Amazon over a year ago.

Update on shipping: Our postal boxes finally left yesterday, UPS is still not running as most of our secondary roads are still covered with ice. UPS is still not running in this section of Tennessee. We have a tower of boxes for them to pick up. We apologize again for the delay - The weekend is supposed to be quite cold here, then Monday through the rest of the week looks good and temps/weather back to normal.

Looks like no shipping services again today. Most of TN is still shut down. -4 here at our shop this morning. Roads are still icey.

Update for our customers who placed their orders over the weekend. Monday was a holiday for USPS and UPS. Today neither service has shown up to pick up our pile of boxes. We did just have a nasty winter storm here overnight in TN with hazardous travel conditions. Roads are still currently bad. Hopefully the boxes will get picked up tomorrow (Weds).

It appears there is sudden surge of misinformation (or misleading information) on the web forums concerning the use of hay nets causing teeth and gum issues. The forum posts I have seen are not parts of any kind of official study and appear to be just assumptions made by a couple of individuals without any context of how they came to their conclusions.

From my own personal experience, the worst teeth I ever saw on a horse were ones that had never been on a net or worn a muzzle. She was a feral 10 yr old horse that had never even been haltered. Not a cribber either, her teeth looked terribly worn on the front. Anyone looking at her would have blamed hay nets and muzzles all day long and she was absolutely never exposed to them.

My 17 yr old horse has been on nets and muzzles her entire life, she has a very tiny bit of wear on her fronts at 17 yrs old (No one can say for sure if it’s the nets/various muzzles or just age that caused it). I can however tell you she would be likely be dead without using muzzles and small hole slow feed hay nets as she never stops eating. She is also IR and PSSM1 and prone to laminitis. As with anything horse related you should use common sense and weigh out the potential benefits vs potential consequences.

Wire grates are an issue, imagine rubbing your teeth and gums on metal, we would never suggest using that for slow feeding. Hanging nets too high (or any feeder type) which causes horses to contort their heads and necks can be an issue and should be avoided if possible.

There have been numerous actual studies that show the benefits of slow feeders when used properly.

Haynets can be beneficial for some horses, yet a new study suggests they may increase a horse’s risk of neck or back injury.
