Nampa Police Department, Idaho
K-9 Maverick ended up in emergency surgery on Wednesday afternoon.
That morning he’d been working with his handler, Officer Shane Witt, doing some bite work for training, and he did great.
He went home for a few hours and later came back in for K-9 training.
Mav stopped working, and he wouldn’t even go after his toy, which is very abnormal. When Maverick coudn’t open his mouth, and Shane couldn’t look inside to check what might be going on, K-9 Maverick was rushed to West Vet where he was sedated for CT scans. Pressure was increasing in his head, putting great strain on his eyes.
He was rushed into emergency surgery.
We are thrilled to report surgery went well and all of the muscle looked healthy and Maverick was home the next day. He’s been resting and doing a little adventuring out with his family, and today he’s coming back to work in a light-duty status, mostly just to be with Shane and to get out of the house. He’s still recovering and thankfully he’s showing great improvement.
K-9 Maverick is a tough guy and he’ll start back into some light training in a few weeks.
Everyone is pleased with his progress. It was darn scary.
***UPDATE on what caused the pressure:
Maverick was diagnosed with Compartment Syndrome (CS), an extremely rare and serious condition. It can lead to blindness and sometimes death. Maverick required an emergency fasciotomy to relieve the pressure/swelling and save his eyesight.
This is only the second case in the Treasure Valley that has been treated by WestVet.
