A little more info on horses and wildfire smoke:)

Nebulizers deliver a specific dose of medication in liquid form directly into the airways for rapid effects. Systemically-administered medications often must be given in high doses in order to pe*****te into the respiratory tract, which can lead to undesirable, and sometimes serious, side effects. T...

I know it's hard to to be on stall/paddock restrictions for all of us including my own ponies. Here are the recommendations for horses and air quality summarized neatly. This information was based on studies from polo ponies in the smoke from the Calgary fires a few years ago. Based on the AQI in the Willamette Valley most of our horses should not go back into training or work for a couple of weeks after our air clears. I know we have bigger problems than that right now, but this information may help some of us plan a bit better. I am currently sitting at 426. What is your AQI?

I know that everyone is concerned about smoke inhalation at this time. I have received a few questions about inhalation therapies. PLEASE! Do not use a nebulizer without direction from your veterinarian. At best it could do no harm, at worst it can do damage to your horses lungs by forcing irritants into already compromised lungs (aka essential oils or colloidal silver). There are treatments for horses affected by smoke inhalation that are proven effective and helpful. The treatments often DO include a nebulizer with prescription medication. If your horse has respiratory noise OR abnormal discharge OR a consistent respiratory rate over 30 per minute, PLEASE call your veterinarian or seek the advice of a veterinarian at an evacuation site. The horse in the video has abnormal discharge, increased respiratory rate and respiratory noise. She was treated with removal to an area with better air quality (561 to 258 AQI), her hay was soaked to remove additional particulates, she was given 3 prescription medications and in 20 minutes had a normal respiratory rate. She was not nebulized and she remains stable 3 days later.

We are temporarily waiving import requirements on livestock from Oregon provided they do not change ownership and return to Oregon within 30 days. This is being done to help with evacuations prompted by the wildfires in Oregon, which has strained available stalls and pastures for sheltering horses and other livestock. Any facility in Washington housing evacuated livestock from Oregon is asked to keep records of the animals and practice good biosecurity.
You can read the full waiver memo here:https://cms.agr.wa.gov/WSDAKentico/Documents/AnS/AnimalHealth/WSDA-OR-Animal-Health-Import-Requirement-Waiver-9-9-2020.pdf

If you have not considered identification for evacuation of your horses here are some quick tips if you do not have evacuation tags or a microchip implanted:
-shave your phone number into the hair
-braid an ID tag into your horses mane
-buckle a cheap leather belt around the throatlatch with info written in sharpie
-use a livestock crayon to write your information on the horse

I have been receiving calls from concerned horse owners with this heavy smoke. Since most of us don't have the option of bringing our 4 legged friends indoors to filtered air, here are a few things you can do for your horses with the crazy smoke we have from the fires:
-soak your hay for 15 minutes in water to reduce pollens
-place your water tubs close to where your horses eat so they don't have to walk long distances to stay hydrated
-reduce activity and riding to prevent additional smoke from entering the lungs
-water dusty areas of your paddock or pasture
-separate horses that don't get along to reduce unnecessary activity
-call your veterinarian if you see consistent respiratory rates over 30 breath per minute, a deep repetitive cough, increased not clear nasal discharge

Please remember that if you are traveling out of state or buying a horse that is traveling to Oregon.......both Coggins (EIA test) and Health Certificate (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) are required for all horses. If you have travel plans this summer please schedule ahead for these things to be done.

http://www.kdrv.com/content/news/Horses-Quarantined-at-Josephine-County-Fairgrounds-484236521.html

A 'positive Coggins test' has forced boarders to keep their horses at the fairgrounds, and no new animals will be allowed in.

I haven't posted in a while because it has been very quiet on the disease front....this is just in:

There are cases of EHM in California that are from horses attending an event in Las Vegas late last month. There are 8 horses that attended that same event that came home to the Willamette Valley. There are no sick horses in Oregon at this time.

I wish to remind all of my clients of the importance of biosecurity when you travel or get horses together.
-Bring and use your own tack/tools/buckets etc
-Do not handle/haul other animals and do not allow others to handle/haul your animals
-If you must handle other animals, be sure you change clothing and wash hands before handling your own animals.
