Fun Tip Tuesday🪄
After the prong collar has been properly introduced, you can begin working on shaping the heel and cueing your dog to tune into that left leg. So when you turn, they turn. Their first language is body language, so they naturally tune into your legs movement. By giving your dog a light pop on the prong collar when you turn and initially giving a reward such as a treat, it signals to them that they need to look to you for guidance and tune in. By giving the reward at the beginning, it creates a positive association with the prong and is seen as guidance instead of restraint. The best way to create harmony between you and your dog is to begin by earning their respect and willingness to work with you.

📍Why do we charge markers?
Markers are the foundation of our entire system. They are how we establish a form of clear communication between us and our dogs. 🗣🐕
By working in a way that caters to our dogs idea of play and their “Prey Drive” (natural instinct to hunt and chase down their food) we can create the engagement and respect necessary for a healthy and cohesive partnership and bond with our dogs.
Go Honey go! She is loving Charging Markers! 💜🐾👏🏼

🐾Fun Tip Tuesday!🐾
Off leash training takes time, but through repetition and dedication, anything is possible!
Key points to remember:
1. Always start within the home, with a leash or long line. Then, after your dog is reliably doing every command within the home on leash/long line, remove the leash/long line and try it without it within the home.
3. Remember the 3 D’s of dog training: Duration/Distance/Distraction (refer to our previous post of the 3D’s for more details on these). Use shorter distances and duration with no distractions at first within the home.
4. Once you and your pup have mastered things within the home, slowly build up to more duration, distance and distraction outside the home. i.e during your walk and eventually other real world places like a park or hike. (*only after your dog is reliably doing every command within the home, off leash, every time!)
5. Remember to always add the long line and leash back in once moving to outside the home. Adding distractions can be very challenging for dogs and they need extra guidance and direction at first.
6. We want success to be inevitable with your pup so they continually build confidence and trust within your leadership and clearly understand what you want. So, for example, if your dog fails at recalling from 10ft away off leash, add the leash back in and make the distance only 5ft away so they do it right, and clearly understand what you want. This sets you up for success later on, with high distractions, and busy places.
7. If at any point you dog begins to struggle or not follow command once the leash is off, go back to the basics and add the leash back in! This isn’t a sign of failure, it’s a sign that we need to solidify our communication with our dog even more before moving to the next step. Be patient with yourself and don’t get discouraged, it takes time to fine tune new skills with loads of repetition!

🐾✅Check out how to start introducing off leash work and other “Place Game” tips for you and your pup!✅🐾
* Make sure you use a leash. You can let it drag on the floor. When first starting, you always want to make sure you have a way to give clear guidance if your dog misunderstands. (It’s better to go back to using the leash and make sure each command is followed first rather than getting your dog to “mostly” do the commands off leash. This foundation is key to ensuring they consistently listen outside the home as well!)
* Separate the commands from your body language (i.e say “yes” PAUSE* then back up or say “good” PAUSE* then treat). This helps your dog listen for your command rather than look for your body language or mistake the body language for a different command.
* Make sure your dog is in a full down, on their hip. Not in a panther pounce position
* Make it more challenging as they progress by adding in the 3 D’s of dog training. Duration (how long can you hold us command), distance (how far away can I be and you hold command), distraction (Can you hold command and a dog be present or birds and toys)
