I've been a veterinary technician for over 20 years, working in avian and exotic practices, small animal, and emergency hospitals, as well as a little time at the zoo. I started my own thing over a year ago, and now I've decided to gear the business towards mobile nail trims... Mostly, because it's more and routine and predictable, allowing me to budget better and gain more financially stability. Don't get me wrong, I love giving medical advice to people about their pets and helping them through hard times, but it really doesn't pay the bills like nail trims do. And, although I enjoy grooming, I've come to find I am severely allergic to dogs, and cats too. So, if you clip off their hair and let it fly around with you for a couple hours and you're me, it means a couple of weeks of illness no matter how much Zyrtec and Allegra you're taking every day!
So, in-home nail trims are my primary focus. But I also do SQ fluids and administration of medications (including injectables), a**l gland expressions, and ear flushing and cleaning (which is a hot item because in most cases I can clear up ear infections and tell you when it's time to see the vet). And of course, I'm still a huge advocate of routine well checks at the vet, and triage a variety of issues so owners know what to expect when they get to the vet. Explaining the "estimate process" so that when you get to the vet you won't feel so lost.
Additionally, I also do in home dental preventative care and hand scaling the teeth, using topical oral a**lgesia (ambesol) and a towel to wrap the pet in, removing the heavy dental tartar and calculus with sterile dental tools, then finishing with an oral rinse and enzymatic toothpaste (C.E.T. poultry flavor). No anesthesia, and a good idea of if that pet needs to see their vet to pursue further dental care. If the there are any obvious problematic teeth, I point them out and map it for the client. It doesn't compare to dental X-rays but also doesn't require anesthesia.
I still exercise dogs, groom geriatric or severely matted pets, bath n blow out packages, and pet sitting of patients who require medical background and veterinary experience, and am happy to provide other services in your home.
