Americus is a sweet 30 pound cattle dog mix. She is up to date on her shots and appears to have been spayed prior to entering the shelter. Americus is a spirited gal who loves to play ball and could do it all day long. She is also the type who takes quiet naps and is happy to just hang out with her family and cuddle up beside you. She loves her people and loves to sleep with them. Americus is currently residing with her foster family. She lives with two dogs and an 11-year-old child. She mostly ignores the other dogs in her foster home and they live together peacefully, however, if they try to take her ball away she is not shy about informing them that the ball belongs to her. She can be protective of her food and toys but responds well to training. Americus gets along well with the 11 year old child and will cuddle up when the child is reading or watching t.v.. Sometimes Americus will ask for belly rubs, but she can also be an independent gal who prefers to curl up on her own. Americus is not comfortable around chaotic, unpredictable situations and may show fear when she hears a loud noise. She would do best in a home with older children who understand how to be respectful around her. It is not clear whether she will do well around cats, as she has shown a desire to chase.
Americus is very well behaved, listens to basic commands and is house trained. She is crate trained and is a pleasure to walk on leash. She does, however, struggle when other dogs approach or are passing on leash. Americus needs an owner who can help her gain confidence and make sure appropriate introductions happen when meeting new dogs and new people. When Americus first went to her foster home, she was very insecure and needed some time to adjust. A new adopter may see Americus cower or show fear in the beginning, but with patience and a quiet routined home life, she will come around. Americus is learning to trust strangers and has shown improvement, but she needs an owner who can help continue to build her confidence.
