I have a rare day at home today (THANK YOU to everyone who has booked us for Spring Break, we are having a rollicking fun, busy time), and I'm going to take this moment to get on my soap box regarding the issues with Pet Acquisition, and Owner Responsibility. I ran across this post on another group, and thought it worth sharing.
"A well bred purebred (with a breeder intent on preservation of their breed) will have a breeder behind them that will always advocate for the dog and never end up in the shelter pipeline.
The shelters are the scapegoats for both irresponsible breeders and the irresponsible buyers who didn't adequately research before acquiring a dog.
When you are paying someone for a dog...that person should be an advocate for the dogs they produce. Health screens for the breed (most include joint xrays and certifications), proving the merits of their dogs for breeding via titles and function, they will be investing back into the breed and often take on a rescue or two at a time to help support a breed they love that didn't have a reputable breeder behind them, and they will always be a lifetime support and insurance for the dog. If someone doesn't care about those assurances and predictability that comes with buying a well bred dog...then supporting a shelter dog is the ethical thing to do.
Hard truth... if the consumer stopped buying puppy mill and backyard bred puppies...the shelters would be empty. The breeders don't need to stop....the consumer does. The consumer has the power to demand better breeders simply by supporting them over the irresponsible ones.
Many feel the Adopt don't Shop movement may actually harm dogs. As the rescues are fueled by irresponsible bybs and mills...their production has INCREASED to help fill demand. It also doesn't educate people on what a responsibly run rescue actually looks like. Just as there are irresponsible breeders...there are also irresponsible rescues. Warehousing dogs, failing to provide adequate physical and behavioral care, adopting without thoughtful matching of dog to home, placing dogs with questionable or unsafe behavior, not disclosing unsafe behavior of dogs they adopt out, cruelly keeping terminal dogs alive to help with fundraising, rescue retail...etc.
Finding sources that actually do for dogs what they should whether that be a responsible preservation breeder or an ethically run rescue is what we should be teaching people how to do."

Happy St Paddy's Day - but more importantly, to our feline fanciers, Happy Feast of St Gertrude day!
This little-known Saint gets scant mention outside of the pet world for her patronage of cats.
Perhaps, rightly so. In the 600's, Gertrude of Nivelles established a Benedictine nunnery, dedicating her life to helping the sick, the elderly, and the poor. Somehow, she became known for eradicating a rat and mice problem. It was not until the 1980's that a leap was made, perhaps due to her being pictured with mice and rats, that she began being portrayed as a benefactor of cats (which are also rodent-banishers).
So whether it's Irish Stout, or Belgian Lager, you can hoist a brew to celebrate today. Or even better, curl up with your favorite kitty!

Everyone having a great Spring Break? How about all that rain? And power outages? Yeah, we have that covered!
Just a gentle reminder to anyone contacting us. Our "office hours" are 6am to 7pm. You may be surprised by that, as I usually respond at all hours, as I want to get your answers to you quickly. But I'm going to start enforcing this, due to the fact that Pet Care Comes First - and self care leads to better care for all.

As we wind down Professional Pet Sitters Week, we note one of our favorite professional activities outside of providing exquisite pet care...
We participate in, and contribute to our community. Helping bring worthwhile, pet-friendly events to Ahwatukee makes us very happy! We can't wait for Concerts in the Park, as we'll be able to be there, talking to pet pawrents about pet issues and pet sitting. Ahwatukee First Fridays are a blast, and we adore the Ahwatukee Dog Show. We also contribute to several pet-centric causes, most notably Dogs Day Out AZ, to whom we commit a monthly donation.
We're all in this together!
