In a day and age when we have access to an incredible abundance of quality information as well as superior tools and talented trainers, and yet we have more dogs and owners struggling than ever… one should be inclined to ask an obvious question.

Like: “Why?”

The answer isn’t difficult to find.

Regardless of the resources available, if the mindset of those who have this access is one that is crippled by societal programming pushing us all to view weak and enabling behavior as virtuous, sophisticated, and healthy, and eschew accountability and leadership as unkind, unfair, and unsavory—then all the resources in the world will be for naught.

Which is why I’m always talking about mindset first. You’ll never find the resources, nor behave in a fashion that will actually help you and your dog as long as you believe that these “other” resources and this “other” behavior is detrimental or un-good.

For we only find that which we’re willing to see. And at the moment, an enormous portion of society is absolutely unwilling to see, never mind actually embrace, the reality staring back at them from their highly dysfunctional dogs that are the byproduct of their highly dysfunctional relationship, which are the byproduct of their highly dysfunctional mindsets, which are the byproduct of our highly dysfunctional societal programming.

All the resources in the world mean nothing if the minds that could use them have determined them invalid.

To ensure a stress-free Fourth of July for your anxious dog, satisfy their mental and physical stimulation needs before the evening festivities. Create a tranquil environment for them by using white noise or music to mask the firework sounds in a dimly lit space such as a kennel, cot, bedroom/ bathroom, or closet. Secure all windows, doors, and gates and ensure your dog has identification tags if they have access to the yard or if you have guests coming in and out you can also keep a leash on your dog.
*These are Suggestions for helping dogs with anxiety. Keep in mind, these may not work for all dogs, but they could help many. If your dog has severe anxiety, consider consulting a professional trainer or veterinarian for advice on how to prepare for next year.*

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over all these years of working with dogs, it’s that the individual trumps everything else.

I’ve seen countless Rotties, GSDs, and Dobies who were soft as marshmallows, and I’ve seen countless Labs, Goldens, and Bernese Moutain dogs who were super firm and super challenging… and yes, even dangerous.

Breed should give you a basic outline of the traits that have been selected for over the years, and what traits you are *likely* to get some “flavor” of—but it is by no means a promise that you’ll get the expected canine package that many assume obtaining a certain breed will guarantee.

But it is a good place to start—but it is only a start, not a finish.

When people ask me what breed I’d choose if I was getting a new dog, my response is always the same: I would choose the individual dog who matched the personality/attitude/behavior I desire.

Does that mean I wouldn’t take breed into consideration, or that I couldn’t find the special match I’m looking for within the breed or breeds I desired? Of course not. But what it does mean is that breed or breeds would absolutely NOT be the most critical piece of my choice puzzle. The individual dog would be the most critical, and it would also be the only tangible, non-guessing piece of the puzzle.

I’ve found the qualities and characteristics I desire from dogs in many, many different outfits. And there have been many, many dogs whose breed or breeds I wouldn’t have thought would be something I’d be attracted to—but then that individual component, that individual variable comes into play, and I’ve found myself deeply drawn to a dog and it’s personality far more than the breed or breeds.

My most precious, smart, sweet, stable, and all around amazing dog was a pittie mix I found on the freeway. Would I have thought she would have been that magical dog based on breed(s) and her early life experiences? Nope. But there she was, being the most special dog in the world—whatever her makeup. (I never had her tested.)

Anyway, this is all to say that when I see/hear people making blanket suggestions about which breeds to get or which breeds to avoid, it always gives me pause. Not because certain general breed truths aren’t more likely than not to be present, but simply because there’s an awful lot of chance and variance that goes on.

So if anyone asked me what I’d best recommend when choosing a dog, it would be to know the breeds and breed tendencies you’re looking at, and then make your final choice based on the individual dog and what the tangible reality says rather than a book, or internet, or dog expert.

The training process doesn't end with the completion of board and train or lessons. It's crucial to apply training to real-life situations and challenge your dog to achieve better results. Daily 15-minute training sessions are not sufficient to help your dog become more comfortable in stores, around distractions, or with people and dogs. To see improvement, practice is essential, so make sure you're putting in the effort.
