Everyone falls in love with the "Angel" on the lap—the cuddles, the sweetness, and the soft feathers. But nobody tells you about the other Angel: the interior decorator who thinks the floor looks better covered in pellets and veggies! 🥦🥕
Taking on a parrot, especially a Cockatoo, is a massive commitment. These intelligent birds are incredibly picky eaters, and often, what they don’t want (or just feel like playing with) gets tossed overboard. 🤷‍♀️
To keep them healthy and your home sane, deep cleaning isn’t a weekly chore—it is a daily requirement. Vacuuming, scrubbing playstands, and sanitizing surfaces are just as much a part of the routine as the cuddles are. You have to love the mess as much as the bird! 🧹✨

We’ve had a huge wave of new arrivals here at Valleywide Parrot Rescue, and our heart (and our aviaries) are very full! Each of these beautiful souls is looking for a fresh start.

It’s the "tough love" every bird owner needs to hear. 🦜💔
Meet the beautiful Chica! While she looks like a total cuddle bug (and she is!), there is a very important rule we follow here at Valleywide Parrot Rescue: Head scritches only! ✋✨
It can be so tempting to pet your bird’s back or tail, especially when they lean into it and practically beg you for it. But here’s the truth: to a bird, petting those areas is a sexual signal. 🛑
Why is this a big deal?
When we pet their backs or under their wings, it triggers a massive hormonal surge. While they might seem like they’re enjoying it in the moment, it often leads to:
* Behavioral Issues: Increased aggression, screaming, and territorial nesting.
* Medical Complications: Chronic egg-laying (even without a mate) and feather destructive behavior.
* Life-Threatening Risks: Hormonal imbalances can lead to egg-binding or cloacal prolapse—conditions that can sadly be fatal. 🚑
Even though Chica might ask for back pets, we say "no" because we love her. Keeping those boundaries helps her stay calm, healthy, and happy! 🤍

It is with shattered hearts that we have to share some tragic news with our Valleywide Parrot Rescue family. 💔🕊️
Last week started as just a normal, happy day here. We were all out playing, laughing, and enjoying the afternoon. Cuckoo, our big beautiful Harlequin Macaw, was out on his perch having fun with the flock. Suddenly, he slipped on his bowl and fell a few feet to the ground. 🦜📉
Honestly, it didn’t look like a serious fall. We’ve seen Cuckoo crash through things in the past and just shake it off—he was such a tough guy. But this time was different. I could tell almost immediately that something was wrong, and within minutes, he began to bleed. 🚑🆘
We rushed him to the hospital immediately. But, despite our frantic efforts and hope, Cuckoo passed away after fighting for 5 hours. 🌈
The hardest part of this entire tragedy is Baby Bird, our Blue and Gold Macaw. She and Cuckoo were deeply bonded. She is now a widow, and we are heartbroken worrying about how she will cope without her other half. 🦜💔
As I was rushing Cuckoo to the vet, he gave Baby Bird this look... it was like he knew he was never going to see her again. I brushed it off in the moment, telling him, "Don't worry, we are going to get you fixed up." I am so sorry we couldn't keep that promise, Cuckoo. 😢🥀
Please send prayers for our team and especially for Baby Bird as she navigates this new, lonely world. We will be keeping a very close eye on her.
