Our latest intake! Meet Lucy! Not the best pics but she’s a wiggle bug 🙂

Lucy is approximately 4 years old and while she’s curious, she’s very sweet! She was great in the bath for a nail trim which is often a struggle.

Lucy will be our last regular intake as our priorities are shifting to rehabbing hedgies in need. We want to be able to focus our time and attention where we can make the biggest impact. Because of this, our space will be very limited.

Once Lucy is ready for adoption, we will let you all know!

Many of you may remember our sweet Priscilla with the vaginal prolapse. Our rescue received her in April and immediately had to have her spayed due to uterine tumors. Unfortunately, she pr*****ed again and had to be euthanized today. Our hearts are broken 😞

We learned a lot from this experience though. During discussion with our vet team, we were educated on why this likely happened so quickly. When a spay is done, they get as much of the tissue as possible but there is still some that is attached where it connects to the cervix that they can not get. When there are tumors in the uterus, that tissue is also prone to growing tumors which is most likely what happened in this case.

Hedgehogs are prone to cancer and there really is no way to prevent that including a “preventive spay”. A spay is very painful for your hedgy and it comes with a tough recovery. This is why we do not recommend a preventive spay. It really doesn’t exist in the way we think it does.

To those of you who donated to her care, we can’t tell you what it means to us that you supported her and helped us give her the best chance at life! “Thank you” simply isn’t enough!

HNPHR is taking a short break to focus on family and life. During this time, we will not be accepting surrenders. Our rescue is currently FULL, but we'll be looking for amazing homes for our foster hedgehogs once we're back!

We are still accepting adoption applications and will reach out if there's a perfect match. However, our surrender and foster forms are temporarily CLOSED. For timely responses, please contact us via our FACEBOOK page, not email.

We appreciate your support over the last 2 years. Our team is dealing with many life changes, reducing the time we can dedicate to the rescue and future surrenders.

We are sad to announce the passing of sweet Patricia, she was our rescue we took in a couple months ago with her brother, Loofa. Her foster mom grew quite attached to her as she was on her weight loss journey and ended up being a foster fail. Patricia had a very sudden and fast decline which ultimately led to her passing this morning. It’s never easy losing a spiky baby, especially when they were as sweet and personable as Patricia. May she rest in peace. Hold your spiky babies extra close while you can 🦔🌈🫶🏻 these are the hard parts of rescue, it never gets easier seeing them go.

Priscilla update!!

We had our last visit today to have stitches removed. She did GREAT! He said she looks amazing and can now be a “normal” hedgy 🥰

Tonight she gets a wheel for the first time since she’s been with us. I can’t wait to see what mess is waiting for me tomorrow 😆

She is such a sweet girl and has been a trooper for sure!

Thank you to all of you! Without each one of you, we wouldn’t be able to give her the chance to live a “normal” hedgy life. We appreciate you❤️

Wanted to share an exciting update on Miss Patricia who was our VERY overweight intake 🩷 We are happy to announce that she has lost 158 grams in 21 days since being here! Having a large and proper wheel, restricted serving amounts, and a lower fat diet have been the key to losing this much weight in such a short amount of time!

We were worried it would take MONTHS for Patricia to even lose any sort of weight, especially if she refused to wheel, which can be very difficult and hard on their joints when they weight so much. But no! She's a little trooper with SO much love to give. I will not lie....she is teetering on the edge of being a foster fail. She has absolutely stolen my heart with HOW SWEET she is! I can give her belly rubs, face pets, etc. She even let me clean out her ears with no huffs or balling up since they were a little waxy.

She definitely needs more time here with us as she has about another 100 grams she should ideally lose. But we will see how things go with her!

Weight loss can be very hard to achieve for most owners as some hedgehogs are very stubborn or arent very active. We're so thankful that Patricia is determined to be Hot Girl Summer ready!

Priscilla update!

Took her today for her first stitch removal. Dr said she looks great! She’s eating and drinking fine and is full of personality 🥰

He will see her back in 10 days for the rest of her stitches to be removed.

Priscilla is home resting. Her surgery went well! Her uterus was full of tumors which was causing the prolapse but once the vet did her spay, her abdomen was completely clear.

We still have a couple follow up visits for stitch removals and checkups.

Fingers crossed that she will now get to live a healthy life!

Tomorrow is the big day! Priscilla will be dropped off at the vet at 7:30 AM. At that point, she needs all the positive thoughts and well wishes she can get. This is a big surgery for such a tiny animal and there are a lot of risks associated with it.

We are currently at $700 of our goal which is amazing! It’s not too late to donate if you would like to. Every $ helps!

Introducing Patricia & Loofa! A sister & brother due who was surrendered to our rescue yesterday. They are around 3 years old and oh so sweet!

Patricia is a chunky girl but absolutely full of love. She will be a longer term foster while she sheds those extra grams. We weighed her today and shes almost 700 grams! Wow!

Loofa is an active and wiggly boy who is oh so fluffy!! Absolutely love his longer coat, he will be ready to go to his quillever home in about a week.

Their past adopters were so kind to include a LOT of supplies including a double unit ferret nation! Once we have a chance to get everything cleaned up and and ready, we'll make sure to add photos to the website.

Sareena and Maple went to their quillever homes today! Yay!

Sareena (top) is a baby who came from The Prickled Rose who has since retired. They are one of our rescue owners, and will still gladly take back any past babies who need assistance with rehoming!

Maple (bottom) is a little old lady who was surrendered to our rescue last month due to some family changes. She is a very sweet girl who loves to wiggle around!

We are so excited for both of these lovely ladies to have found their perfect match! We apologize for the less frequent posts. This year our rescue staff have been extremely busy, while the rescue itself has been pretty slow. At this time we do not have ANY fosters, but we do have lots of space to take in an surrenders in need! While we have a short break in-between rescues, we'll be sure to enjoy some much needed downtime

As you may have noticed, we have put a pause on intakes for a bit. Holidays are hectic with families, work etc.

What we didn’t share is that during this time, we have been busy taking care of hedgies that needed extra love and attention.

Pippin came to us from the humane society in California and was in ROUGH shape when we got her. After several visits to the vet, she had a major glow up and was the sweetest most gorgeous girl! We had been working on transitioning her to kibble from soft food (not sure she had ever had kibble before us) when we noticed the side of her face looked a little puffy. Fast forward 5 weeks and the situation was obvious…Pippin had an oral cancer tumor and needed to be put down.

Next we had Remi. Remi was what I call a “Super Senior” meaning he was close to 7 years old. Hedgehogs have a short life span and 7 is incredibly old for a hedgehog. He was surrendered to us because his owner was moving and was unable to take him. We fell in love as soon as we got him and decided he would be a permanent resident of the rescue. We knew his time with us would be short and we wanted to show him all the love! Because he was an older boy, he wasn’t as active and he was missing some teeth so he was only able to really eat soft food. Unfortunately, he declined quickly and passed away. Remi was spoiled, loved and comfy in our care.

These situations are the first of their kinds for us and our hearts are truly broken. When we get intakes, we love them and treat them like they are ours until they are adopted. We spare no expense to make sure that they are properly taken care of including proper vet care. Losing them is not easy.

Rescue is HARD! But even with the heartache, expense and time consumption, we love what we do. None of the work we do would be possible without each of you! Thank you for supporting us and standing by us during the chaos that is rescue work.

HEDGIE SPOTLIGHT! Meet Namine 💚

Namine was recently surrendered to our rescue, she was surrendered to someone else with no information so we were contacted to help! She seems to be an older girl who is a slow mover but can be sweet! She will need an owner who is aware of her age and how to be gentle and also look for signs of when she needs extra assistance. She's a little old lady who would love to be someone's lap buddy and cuddle!

Namine does not come with any supplies, an approved set up is required to adopt. If you wish to get a kit, her adoption fee will be waived! Kits are $200, please message us on FB if you wish to get a kit!

It's been a while since we've last posted! Our rescue along with out awesome staff took a much needed break this holiday season but we're back and we have two adorable rescue girls looking for a new home just in time for the new year!

Namine - Female - Estimated to be around 3-4 Years Old

Namine was recently surrendered to our rescue, she was surrendered to someone else with no information so we were contacted to help! She seems to be an older girl who is a slow mover but can be sweet! She will need an owner who is aware of her age and how to be gentle and also look for signs of when she needs extra assistance. She's a little old lady who would love to be someone'slap buddy and cuddle!

Pineapple was recently surrendered to our rescue, she can be a spicy and stubborn girl, but is very food motivated! She has a lot of potential to bond with a dedicated owner who is willing to put in the time for daily bonding and handling. Her previous owners did not do the necessary research to own a hedgehog and their children were afraid of her, so pineapple was not given the right circumstance to leave her shell and be spoiled!

***RESERVED*** Yay for Beau! He’s officially reserved and will be adored and spoiled 🙂 We are so excited for him!

Look at this adorable boy!! Meet Beau. He’s one of the babies that was born in the rescue and was adopted only to be returned when the family realized that a hedgehog wasn’t a good fit.

Beau is a bit spicy but does chill after a few minutes. He is still young so he has plenty of time to bond with his person. He will need someone who is able and willing to spend time with him and who is patient.

All he wants is to be shown love, patience and bugs 🥰
