It's essential that every puppy learns to enjoy being handled, especially on the parts of the body that turn into common bite triggers. Early puppyhood handling and socialization is easy to do and makes a huge difference in a dog's temperament and quality of life, for the rest of their life!

Here is a letter from Brenda to officially introduce who will be continuing on what she has worked so hard to build here in the valley. No one will ever replace Brenda, that is not our goal. We believe in the mission she started and did not want to see it go away. We value the community Brenda has built over the last few years and want to see it continue to grow! Thank you for your support in this transition, we look forward to working with you all!

An important post we had to share for ⚠️
・・・
As our children grow, it’s important to teach them the skills to interact with dogs safely. And, petting dogs is one of those skills to teach properly. We like kids to learn the phrase “one hand enough, two hands too rough!” from an early age.
When a child puts two hands on a dog, even if the interaction begins gently, it can escalate to rougher petting, grabbing, or hugging very easily. Teaching kids to pet a dog with one hand on the dog’s shoulder or back at the closest point relative to the child (i.e. NO reaching over the dog’s head or back) is a safe option and even something we adults can remember as well.
Remember to keep interactions brief and allow dogs plenty of opportunities to say “no, thanks!” (for kids and dogs!)

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.
🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.
🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.
🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.
🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.
🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.
🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

The look on a student’s face when they have finally accomplished a goal with their dog is absolutely PRICELESS! I find great joy when you see a student finally make that connection with their companion!
Here is my story. I have had a few dogs and I have always trained them for basic manners. However, those days came to an end when my husband and I brought CJ into our lives. CJ was “different” LOL...to say the least! Typical training wasn’t working with our new Pure Working Line Australian Shepherd! I’ve always enjoyed training and I had made a commitment to this dog and no matter how tough things got, I wasn’t going to give up on him or me. So fast forward a few years and “tears” LOL.....I had CJ entered into yet another training facility with a trainer of 29 years experience, this trainer became my mentor and best friend. She taught me through-out the years there is more than one way to teach one behavior, you just have to find what works best for your dog.
I actually had never heard of AKC Competition Obedience or any of those things! As CJ and I progressed....I was HOOKED! CJ is now 7 years old and has earned 11 AKC Titles in various dog sports...and we’re still going at it and LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT! I was so hooked, we got another Aussie, Yeager. Yeager is 3 years old now and has earned 8 AKC Titles in various dog sports as well! My dogs and I perform in several AKC dog sports, including Competition Obedience, Rally, Trick Dog, FastCat, Cat, and Nose-Work (Odor Discrimination). We are also currently learning Dock-Diving and Herding.....FUN FUN FUN!!
With the help and guidance of my mentor and a few other experienced trainers of 45 years experience, I was able to start instructing classes at my mentor’s facility and also at our local volunteer Obedience club. I have attended workshops and seminars with some of the top trainers and have gained invaluable knowledge.
This is my passion! Some weeks, well most weeks, I’m training my own dogs or other people’s dogs 5 to 6 days out of the week! It’s kind of like a job, but it definitely doesn’t feel like it! While things were definitely very challenging with CJ, I am forever grateful for every one of those challenges and to have him in my life for if it wasn’t for him, I would not have pursued my passion! I am grateful I have the opportunity to do what I love (Thank You Hubby)!
My goal to make human and dog live a long and happy life together through basic manners obedience and at the same time introducing and opening the door to all the other wonderful things they can do together!
