I get asked pretty often about the Orthodox view of animals (especially beloved pets) in the afterlife. So far, I’ve only been able to say that reason applied to our tradition of the relationship between God, man, and the cosmos, and applied to the nature of our own loving relationships with animals, indicates to me that there could be no happiness or fulfillment of creation without the existence of animals in eternity. Met. Kallistos Ware has at least expressed hope in this regard. But I’ve recently come across a rather strong Saintly confirmation of this by Saint Luke the Surgeon of Simferopol:

“Does man only possess immortality? The great words: ‘Behold, I make all things new’ are certainly related not to man only, but to all creation, to every creature. We have already said that the spirit of animals, even the smallest part of it, cannot be mortal, for it is from the Holy Spirit….In the new Jerusalem, the new universe, there will be a place for the animals, too….Eternal life for [non-human] creatures will be only quiet happiness and enjoyment of the new radiant nature full of light, in communication with man, who will no longer torture and exterminate it.” (*Spirit, Soul, and Body*, pp. 120-121)

A Mohawk Nation woman of Algonquin descent, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha used nature, and a belief that all living things are connected, to teach her community about God. While she had no formal education and little access to scripture, she was known by her people as a living Bible.

Today we celebrate her feast day and remember her as the first Native American saint from North America. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, also known as the “Lily of the Mohawks”, pray for us!

As most know, our itty-bitty Frankie Kitty decided to “move out” unexpectedly at the end of March, and her absence has left a big 4lbs hole in our hearts.

The local pet store we take Gabriel to get his nails done at has a kitty rescue booth, and on my birthday “Fletcher” was brought in with a litter of kittens.

Last Saturday we saw Fletcher was still at the pet store, and we were told that he was going to be returned to the shelter the next day since nobody had adopted him. We couldn’t let him go back to kitty jail.

Fletcher is now J.R.—Junior Kitty, and slowing acclimating to his new home. He’s vocal, has a half tail and he shows Grandpa Kitty who’s boss!

Welcome home, J.R. Kennedy!

It has been 6-weeks that our sweet, sassy, and precious tiny girl, Francis “Frankie” Kitty, walked out the back door and off our porch at our new home in Phoenix, Arizona.

O blessed Saint Francis; we pray to you for the safe return of our beloved pet. We ask that you keep an eye on them, guard them, and lead them back to us. Keep them secure and uninjured, and provide them with food and shelter along the way.

Grant us trust and confidence in God that we will find our lost pet. Never let us fall into deep sadness and hopelessness. Please send our pet kind and compassionate people who will take care of them as we look for them.

Holy Francis, we believe that your prayers will help us to take better care of all creation. Help us treat all living things with kindness and compassion.

Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment, pray for us. Amen

We have added a new member to clan:

Gabriel, like his angelic namesake, is fearless and tender, yet this pup announces no one’s arrival. 🙂

He’s independent and a cuddle bug on his own terms. Our sweet shelter toddler is a bundle of excitement, angst, and joy. We are still learning to navigate the kitties and how to play together.

May God bless Gabriel with many healthy years!
