Fishkeeping Fast Fact of the Day:

Certain species of zoanthid corals can be lethal. They're notorious for what's known as palytoxin poisoning.

(By the way, that's one type of fish that's NOT ideal for a fish tank. The huge fish needs plenty of room to swim, and it's strong enough that it could hurt itself when it slams into a tank.)

🥚 Eggs yolks...who would have thought?

We don't really recommend giving fish human food, but egg yolks are among several human foods that typically don't harm fish when used properly.

But there definitely are some foods that could.

Lookin' like it wants to give you a big smooch, the kissing gourami can certainly make you feel loved.

The kissing fish may be seen locking lips with each other, as well as plants and other objects.

But "Aww, how cute," isn't really an appropriate reaction. When they "kiss" each other, it's more of a fight. They may even injure their jaws, although that's rare.

Still, those pouty lips make these fish a sight to behold!

Studies show that it can reduce blood pressure and emotional agitation. That is why they are displayed in such diverse places as dentist offices to nursing homes, restaurants and doctor offices," he says in a blog on MentalHealth.net.

In honor of National Pet Week and Be Kind to Animals Week, we'd like to let you in on a few secrets.

Many fish are smarter than people think they are!

👉🏻 Fish might be able to recognize you.

👉🏻 Fish may enjoy pleasant surroundings in your living room.

👉🏻 They may enjoy having people present. Dogs aren't the only pets that don't like to be alone!

👉🏻 They might get a little annoyed when you take away their toys, so try to keep their environment as predictable as possible for them.

👉🏻 They will be disturbed and uncomfortable with water that is not as clean as it should be, so show them how much you care with a clean environment.

In other words, the more you appreciate them, the more they'll appreciate you! At least we like to think so. 😉

Q & A of the Day:

Question: Isn’t distilled water the same as RODI water?

Answer: No. Distilled water is made by boiling the water, while RODI water is made by removing the ions. Either way, you will have to remineralize the water to ensure the livestock have the nutrients they need.

Did you know:

Nearly 1/3 of all freshwater fish are threatened with extinction. In 2020 alone, 16 freshwater fish species were declared extinct. Since 1970, mega-fish — those that weigh over 66 pounds — have declined in number by 94%, and migratory freshwater fish saw a 76% decline.

Part of the reason for this crisis is that up to 400 million tons of pollution are dropped into freshwater ecosystems every year, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

In recognition of National Wildlife Week, let's all do our parts to protect our freshwaters and their inhabitants.
