It's love at first sight! 😍 These four-legged heartthrobs are all dressed up and hoping to find their soulmate. All dogs 6 months and older have their adoption fees sponsored by the BISSELL Pet Foundation through Feb. 17.

Foster fails are the best fails of all! 💙 Darla, now Ruby, had been returned to the shelter twice. She was dealing with separation anxiety that had led to some destructive behavior. But a foster decided to take a chance on her, and she's doing better than ever in her now-forever home.

"She has learned so many tricks, some much needed manners, and even how to do puzzles. She gets along swimmingly with her dog sister and cat siblings. Her anxiety is essentially gone and she just sleeps while we’re gone now. She is a wonderful addition to our family. This is her on our recent trip to the Riparian Preserve. She’s such a good girl."

"Phoebe is initially a bit shy but shortly after meeting her, she'll melt your heart. Phoebe is a sweet gal who enjoys the simple pleasures of life- sunshine on her fur, walking around the neighborhood, spending time with her people, or nibbling on a treat. She is an excellent walker and is a quick trusting dog who also enjoys car rides."

Meet a very special senior chihuahua: Freddy! This little old man had a nasty mouth infection that required dental care outside of the shelter. Now, he has 10 fewer teeth, but he's much happier, and he's hopeful his forever family will come soon.

"Freddy is doing great! Looks like the pain is all gone. He had 10 teeth extracted. Right now we are working on gaining healthy weight."

(2/2) "Not surprising, my mom really struggled with the loss of her husband of 60 years. It was at this time her bond with Liberty really started to grow. She started to rely on her for strength, comfort, conversation and a sense of security. Liberty took those responsibilities seriously, always by her side, barking at door to door salesmen and growling at anyone who got too close; just what my mom wanted. When my mom’s medicine went out of wack and she started hallucinating, It was Liberty who kept the ghosts away. When my mom would wake up with a start after hearing a noise, it was Liberty who was there, dutifully guarding her bedroom door.

It has been awhile since my father passed and time marches on. Mom is in her 90’s now and lives in a home for the elderly. She gets confused easily and often can’t tell you what year it is. She struggles with names and faces that used to come easily to her. She often is unsure of what is going on. However, through all the mental fog and confusion, there is one thing she knows with absolute certainty; she loves Liberty and Liberty loves her.

For this I am grateful, because it is this love that broke the curse of the widowhood effect."

"It is this love that broke the curse of the widowhood effect." This year, Lyris Patterson and her brother, Daryl, penned an essay about an adoption from MCACC that won us $10,000 from Petco Love. Below is their story:

(1/2) "According to CNN, your chances of dying goes up to 90% after losing a long term spouse? It’s called the “widowhood effect.”

As my parents started entering their mid eighties we were afraid that after one of them passed, facing an empty house everyday would make the widowhood effect a reality. To combat this, my brother searched our county shelter for the perfect dog; one who was affectionate, smart and took their responsibilities seriously. We found that in Liberty, an Australian cattle dog mix.

Though my folks weren’t big dog people, Liberty worked her way into their hearts. My father took to Liberty right away. They bonded over his secret stash of contraband snacks. Nothing tasted better to him than forbidden food in the form of processed meats. He would share his beef sticks with her, bonding over the mutual secret they both kept from my mom and his doctor.

Unfortunately my dad passed away before my mom. It was but a short period of time from him being bedridden to us having to say goodbye. Just as expected, Liberty comforted my father up to the day he died, often resting her head on his lap and just being with him as he left us."

Showstopper Cletus is back at it again with some STUNNING photos! 💙✨ This senior pup currently in foster got the chance to show off his best angles, and it's safe to say it's love at first sight.

Cletus is dog friendly, has coexisted with cats and tortoises, and has won the Best Cuddle Bug award for two years in a row. This well-behaved, polite gentleman is one of our most eligible bachelors. Thanks to Pup + Me Photography for sharing these fantastic shots!

When Pepe went missing from his mom's Laveen home 7 years ago, his family thought it was the end of their love story. But this frail old man was found wandering the streets of Litchfield Park this weekend - about 40 minutes away from where he disappeared. Our field officers discovered Pepe had a microchip and were able to contact the owner. Pepe is now 15 years old, but he will spend the rest of his golden years with his family again. 💙 Pet owners, be sure to keep microchip information up to date! It's Game Day! 🏈 We have Dulce out in the field today predicting which team will take home the trophy. Despite being a senior sports analyst, Dulce is still adoptable at the East shelter and is hopeful her forever family will take her home to watch the game! #A5089357

If you are surrendering your dog or bringing in a stray pet to the shelter, please talk to us first before doing this. We were not open at the time, so we don't know how long Sammy had been there before we found him. Our Shelter Diversion Navigators can provide stray dog finders with crates, dog food and other pet supplies while they wait for their intake appointment, and they have plenty of resources available for pet owners. Maricopa County Animal Care & Control and the Arizona Humane Society are not the same, but we work hand-in-hand to care for the pets in our community. 🤝

Two months ago, Laila thought she would have to surrender her dog Mia. Her living situation had changed, and she had run out of options. Laila had slept outside the night before coming to the shelter because Mia wasn’t allowed in the home she was staying in. When she visited MCACC, a Shelter Diversion Navigator helped set Mia up with short-term emergency boarding and found a rescue that could get her spayed and vaccinated at a low cost. Laila had found a pet-friendly apartment, but she wouldn’t be able to move in until the end of December. Our Shelter Diversion Navigator, Emma, was able to find a foster in the community that could help house Mia for that time. This month, they finally reunited, and MCACC provided her with all the supplies necessary for their new home, including a leash, harness, crate, bed, bowls, food, calming chews, toys, flea/tick medication, and more.
