Important information from BARCS. Please read and share!

Over the weekend, BARCS took in 133 animals. If you’ve been following along with our posts, you know we were scrambling to figure out where we could possibly house them all, desperate to avoid unnecessary euthanasia due to space constraints. It was an overwhelming afternoon—starting Friday already 10 kennels short, and as soon as one animal left, more kept pouring in.

But, as always, Baltimore stepped up. People came out to adopt, foster and our rescue partners answered the call. Even with skyrocketing intake numbers this year, we’re proud to say adoptions and foster placements are higher than ever. So, you might be asking: why can’t BARCS keep up?

A big part of that answer is lost animals.

Of those 133 animals we took in this weekend, 86 are lost pets—more than 60% who can’t leave right away for adoption or foster care. We’re required to hold them for 72 hours, waiting for their families to claim them. This creates a huge challenge for us, one that neither BARCS, nor our adopters and fosters, can solve on our own. Lost and stray animals have always been a big part of our intake, but in recent years, they’ve become a driving force behind our shelter's capacity crisis.

And it’s not just about kennel space. The real difficulty comes when these pets aren’t reclaimed. Once their hold period is over, we’re left trying to find a positive outcome for animals we know almost nothing about. This threatens our ability to save their lives when the shelter is constantly full—like it has been nearly every week this year—we have to make decisions based on how they behave in a shelter environment. Which is almost never the same behavior we see in a home, because being in a shelter is stressful. We also don’t know if they’re good with kids, other pets, or if they’re comfortable around different adults. This lack of information is an instant barrier to adoption and often means they stay in our care longer, waiting as we piece together their personalities in an abnormal environment.

This is why stray animals are creating a bottleneck in our system.

And, that’s why we’re asking Baltimore to help us not just by reacting—through adopting, fostering, or volunteering—but by being proactive when it comes to lost animals. And, you’re going to be hearing this messaging from us now more than ever because you, our supporters, are the key to us saving lives and we need you to be just as informed on this issue as our staff and volunteers are.

MYTHS, FACTS, ACTIONS:

Did you know that pets are statistically less likely to be reunited with their owners if they’re brought to a shelter? The best thing you can do for healthy, friendly stray pets is to try to find their owners rather than bringing them to a shelter.

In Baltimore City, it’s not the law that lost pets must be taken to a shelter. (If you’ve heard otherwise, it’s likely because neighboring counties have different rules.) Instead, if you find a lost pet, hold onto it and try to locate the owner first. Most lost pets are found close to home, so talk to your neighbors, post on social media, post in Petco Love Lost’s facial recognition database or put up flyers. These simple steps can help reunite them with their families and keep the shelter from becoming overcrowded.

Don’t assume a pet has been abandoned or isn’t loved. As you can see from lost reports all over social media, many wonderful families are looking for their pets. Sometimes, pets that have been missing for even just a few days can appear as though they’ve been lost for much longer. Asking around in your neighborhood and keeping the pet nearby is their best chance at finding their way home.

We recommend having any lost animal scanned for a microchip as soon as possible at the nearest animal hospital or shelter. Microchips often contain the owner's address, which may be close to where the animal was found, helping avoid the stress of bringing the pet to the shelter. This also prevents transportation challenges for owners, as many may not live near the shelter.

If you’ve exhausted all efforts to locate the owner and cannot safely house the found animal, BARCS is here as a last resort. We are often over capacity, so before bringing a pet in, please visit our website for additional resources and then, if needed, make an appointment to surrender the animal. By making an appointment, we can spread out the intake of new animals which results in lives saved.

PREPARING YOUR OWN PETS:

While it’s essential to know how to best help lost pets find their way home, it’s equally important to prepare for the possibility that your own pet could get lost–because yes, it could happen to any one of us. By taking a few simple steps now, you can ensure that your pet doesn’t end up in a shelter, holding a kennel space, and that valuable resources are saved for those animals in urgent need.

1. Ensure Your Pet Has a Collar and Tags: Make sure your pet wears a collar, at all times, with tags that include your current address and phone number. This will help anyone who finds your pet quickly contact you.

2. Microchip Your Pet: A microchip is a small, permanent way to identify your pet. You can have a microchip placed by your veterinarian, through a shelter or one of the various community clinic events!

3. Keep Vet Records Accessible: Have your pet’s veterinary records printed and available. This can be crucial if you need to show proof of ownership or health records on a day when your vet’s office is closed.

4. Take Clear Photos: Keep recent photos of your pet on your phone or computer. Include clear images of their face and any unique markings. This can help in quickly identifying your pet if they get lost.
