Emergency preparedness for your pet.
We may not be affected by hurricanes in Arizona, but emergencies can happen at a moment's notice and you may have to leave immediately. Do you have a "go bag" ready for your four legged friends? Here's a few essentials, tips, and easy hacks from our team at Altered Tails and The List!
1. Old backpack: You have one laying around or in the back of your closet. Even a donated satchel from an event will work perfectly.
2. Vax records: Make a copy of your records and toss them in a marked folder, so you don’t have to find the originals in a moment’s notice. These will be vital if you need to be sheltered somewhere with your pet, or if they are boarded.
3. Extra meds: Ask your vet if they can give you an extra two week supply of any meds your pet is taking. Some cannot be prescribed in extra or have a short shelf life, but work with your vet on a plan of action and see what you can get!
4. Anxiety meds: This will be a stressful time, not matter the reason for leaving. Ask your vet about an anti-anxiety medication like Trazodone or Gabapentin. They can help calm them temporarily but will need to be picked up in advance from your pharmacy.
5. Food: A 3-5 day supply takes up minimal space and can get you and your pet through the first few days or transition them to other foods where you are.
6. Water: Have a separate container for their water to keep your water sources separate. There is “clean water” for your pet and “clean water” for you, very different standards.
7. Collapsible bowls: Super handy for food and water, and take up almost no space. You may have some as free swag from events!
8. Toy: It can alleviate stress, help them play in a new environment, and can smoosh way down into the bag.
9. Your old shirt: It smells like you, and feels like home. This can help them stay calm in a new place or if they are lost, bring them back to the new safe space with their sense of smell.
Reunited After A Year!
Reunited, and it feels so good! She never thought she would see her cat again, until a TNR colony manager trapped this handsome boy and we found his microchip! We scan every TNR cat for a microchip and have reunited families in the past (even from 3 hours away), but a year later?? That might be a record. They were both so happy to be together again, you could feel it even being near them. This is an important reminder: microchip your pets! 1 out of every 3 pets will be lost in their lifetime. We can microchip during their surgery appointment, or there are low cost clinics doing it every month, but either way you do it, it can reunite your family. Don’t lose a year together, or worse, microchip your pets.
#GivingTuesday is here. Help us care for more.
We don’t work in our community, we Work FOR our community. From the biggest velvet hippos, to the tiniest floofs. Big and small, we help them all. Husky Sea Shanties
♬what will we do with a drunken husky, what will we do with a drunken husky, what will we do with a drunken husky, early in the morning?”
Are sea shanties still a thing?? These handsome husky pups from @HALO Animal Rescue were feeling pretty good with their pre-surgery drugs, and boy were they going to tell you about it 😉 Did you know 25% of the animals we help each year are from rescues trying to find them new homes? With our prices being the best in the valley for spay/neuter/vaccine/microchips etc…the rescue can save more money and save more lives. When we work together, we fight against pet homelessness stronger than ever! Keep an eye on their page or website for updates on these cuties 😉

12 day old baby kitten lunch time!
Our team doesn’t only work in the animal welfare world, they are an integral part even when they go home. Ashley, one of our lead vet techs, is raising tiny Hagrid, who is less than 2 weeks old. Feeding him every 2 hours, waking up multiple times each night to care for him, taking him everywhere she goes for weeks until he is strong enough. Anybody who has bottle fed knows how difficult it is to balance your life and raise a week-old kitten or puppy. Most of our employees foster for rescue groups, including taking some of the hardest cases due to their medical background. Besides every employee understanding the moral imperative of helping the community, these actions help us understand and empathize with you when you work with Altered Tails. We are not only a nonprofit clinic who works with pet owners, fosters, and rescue groups; We are you.
