Growing up on the trail. We are celebrating our 5 year Nomadiversary today! We sold our home and most of our belongings. In 2019, when I was 10, we loaded into the camper and haul out horses and dogs with us as we see America on horseback. 5 years later we have traveled thousands of miles on horseback , rarely riding the same trail twice. We have packed in, done thru rides and visited iconic places. We were on our own through COVID barely noticing a change since we mostly just camp and ride in remote places. I am 15 now and educated entirely experientially. I have trained 3 mustangs that were born in the wild, published a book, a commissioned artist, I am a barefoot trimmer, I have two online shops, I am a guide, know wilderness first aid and have my learners permit (I drive a truck and can hitch up a trailer in my own). Take a look at a few of my favorite memories. 1. Monument Valley UT 2. Potty break with the herd. 3. Bryce Canyon , AZ. 4. Mount Rushmore , Custer SP SD 5.Skylight Arch, Big Water UT 6. Horseshoe Bend, Colorado River, AZ . 7. Wind Cave NP Custer SD 8. Grand Canyon AZ 9. Kennedy Meadows Sierra Nevada mountains CA

Driver training day has to lead to an adventure! I drove 40 miles, one way, down winding mountain roads to Darington WA to the Old Sauk River trail. We had a great hike and then I drove us back.

The forest there was beautiful, as all western Washington forests are, with new plants and interesting things.

Come take a look!

We made a wide loop around horse camp to include the Pacific Northwest Trail and views of Iron mountain and its range to the south of us. There is not a lot of story in this post. There are gorgeous photos to help you enjoy the ride and appreciate the PNW.

What we love about the PNW is the forests. Lush is a word you would use to describe your rides. Trees, giant in many places, dripping in ferns and moss. Nature creates art in the way old stumps grow new life. Sun dapples through the forest crown to allow flowers and berries to emerge from the thick duff created over hundreds of years.

Join us in one of our favorite rides. You could find it from the Les Hilde trailhead in Hamilton WA. Most people don’t venture this far from the trailhead and we enjoy that 💕

We had our first ride out of Whitefish and headed to Saddle lake. The trail crews had done some clearing before we arrived and posted a map of their work at the trailhead.

It shows they stoooed before the lake but we will still see if we can make it through.

This was a 14 mile out and back. Come see how we made it to the lake and of course a swim!

We started in Nampa ID Dunn Rite Ranch. Joyce Dunn graciously hosted us for about 18 hours on our journey across the heat wave. We will end at over final destination after this rest, Crescent lake in Oregon!

Come take a look at how we successfully traveled through areas with 100 degree temps for 6days to punch out the other side.

Our final ride this visit was to Picture canyon.

Before I share the ride I would like to thank camp host Jason for making this camp so great! When we first came here several years ago we could only fit into a few sites. Jason has groomed the entire camp so all sites are flat, without gullies. The overhanging branches have also been removed. He was scrubbing the community water tank while we were there. The bathrooms are spotless and not a single fly in there. He is always available if we need anything. Say hello from Scouts Trail next time you stop in.

We have been wanting to do this ride since our last visit. I think it would be very crowded on a weekend. We went in the Monday after a holiday weekend and had the place to ourselves.

Are you ready for tunnels, petroglyphs and waterfalls? Let’s ride!

It is always about the journey and not the destination. We left camp with a rough idea where we would go. But, as we began Takoda didn’t seem herself. We decided to just ride to the pond and have lunch, graze the horses and swim the dogs. Then reasess. We headed to Sunset TH and everyone was energized after the stop at the pond.

This ride then became Eldon Spring trail to Sunset th, Sunset trail to Little Bear, down Little Bear back to Little Eldon trail, back to camp. It was 13.5 miles and Little Bear was one of the scariest trails ever.

I was asked two amazing questions this morning

1:How do you get your horses to stay near when you take a lunch break.

2: when eating different grasses from different places do your horses ever get belly aches?

So I thought I’d answer here!

We are one big herd, horses are herd animals and will naturally want to stay with their herd.
We have been living with them (sometimes even in the same pen) 24/7 for 5 years now.
They love their lives on the road and have no need or want to leave.

Our horses have never had trouble with different grasses or hay while on the road (the only hay we’ve had a problem with is “coastal” which seems to be the most common hay in Texas.
It caused Takoda to have an impaction colic)
Although we have never had trouble with grasses and hay we do take precautions to prevent any problems.
They always have free choice hay no matter what, horses need constant food to keep their digestive system moving and to prevent any gut issues.
When buying hay we always get the best quality (no matter the price) and try to stay away from hay with high sugar.
If we do have to get a more sugary hay we will mix it with any older hay we still have.
Even if they are on pasture and could very well live off the grass, I will still give them hay.
We always let the horses eat while on the trail so they can find any medicinal plants they may need. Horses know what they need to stay healthy and will eat what they need.
They also get gut health supplements everyday from Pharm- Aloe and Silver Lining Herbs.
