Did you know a simple plastic bottle filled with salt water can help prevent water bowls from freezing? ❄️💡

This clever little trick comes from someone who works with horses—and I can confirm, it really works!

Here’s how to do it:

Fill a plastic bottle with about 1/4 salt and the rest warm water.

Shake it up until the salt is fully dissolved.

Submerge the bottle in the water bowl.

That’s it! The salt water bottle floats and keeps the surrounding water moving just enough to prevent freezing.

I’ve been using this for a feral cat that hangs around our house, and the bowl stayed unfrozen for 36 hours—even in 20-degree weather! It also works great for chicken waterers.

Such a simple idea… but such a helpful one. 🐾

Her stated mission: “To help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their lives for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us.” We feel Vivien would have approved!
