The just past holiday season is always such a special time with family, but today I was thinking about some of the every day of the year things that remind me of special family and making sourdough is one of them. My niece gave me the starter two years ago and it is still making delicious bread and baked goods. Some of that starter has been passed on to other family members and friends who are now making their own.
Every time I make a loaf, I cover it over with the bread towels from my husband's Grandma Bessie. Grandma Bessie taught me to roll out Syrian bread on these towels years ago and using them reminds me of all the homemade recipes she shared with our family; meat pies, stuffed grape leaves, and homemade yogurt were some of our favorites!

Pine and American holly....at Christmas on the Farm on Saturday we will be doing an "herb blurb" every hour and two of the blurbs will feature these two plants. They both have a lot of great uses we will talk about, and if you have some growing in your yard, you can go home and make some products from them. (If you don't, I would also be happy to walk you to where they are growing here and you can cut some yourself!)

I bought plant based laundry detergent for several years before it occurred to me to think, "Could I just do this myself?" With some research, I realized ivy contains saponins which are natural cleansing and foaming properties and we happen to have a lot of English ivy growing up a section of our house. So, if you, too, have ivy growing that you don't spray, and want to try a batch, here is the process... collect handfuls of ivy leaves, put in a big pot, cover, and bring to a simmer like you would a tea. Let simmer on low for 15-20 minutes. When it is cool, squeeze all the leaves over the pot to get out as many saponins as possible. (Can discard the leaves or feed them to your goats.) Line up some clean quart mason jars. If you wish, into each jar, put one or two drops of essential oil to scent the detergent. I like to use tea tree, lemongrass, eucalyptus, or a combination. (I also keep cleaning and reusing the same jars and lids because the oils will scent the lids as you shake the detergent each time so you wouldn't want to try and reuse them for any food.) Then just use a funnel with a strainer over it to ladle the ivy detergent into the jars. That is it. Per load, just shake the jar to get it foaming, then pour some into the liquid dispenser area of your washer. (If you have very stained laundry, you would probably need to presoak or use a natural stain remover.) We have been using this now for a year and no complaints from anyone in the household!

I often find it's the small things that can bring about big hope. The picture below is a type of sorrel. When we moved from Pennsylvania a few years ago, "packing" from my herb garden was, for me, about as high a priority as packing the house. Sorrel grows wild many places but I had never seen this type my friend had gifted me years before anywhere else and I really wanted to transplant it to our new home here. I call it "Sword Sorrel" because of the leaf shape, although, I am sure, it has a proper Latin name catalogued somewhere. I was very sad when the 3 month drought on our farm this summer shriveled all of it away despite my best efforts. After the hurricane when so much green came back to life I started hoping and each day checking for any small sign that some had survived. Yesterday, amongst the brick on our path to the barn, I found this healthy little batch thriving. I am so excited! (And a large part of that excitement is that this particular sorrel is the only leafy green my youngest son has ever willingly eaten!)
